That Rutten Neck Crank brings back memories. Years ago, when I was in the military, there was a guy who used to get the better of me when we grappled. Due to my preference for wrestling and being on top, I'd normally get side mount on him. However, he'd always reverse it by first pushing my head towards his lower body. Then, he'd use his legs to grab my head and pull me down the rest of the way. It used to frustrate the hell out of me, because I knew I was capable of beating him. Well, one day I was watching my "Big DVDs of Combat" and came across an interesting move called the Rutten Neck Crank. It was the solution to this guy's escape to my side mount. As a matter of fact, his future escape attempts became the setup to the Rutten Neck Crank. He went from smirking every time we grappled to deciding that going up against me wasn't as fun as it used to be. Thanks Bas! ;)

I made this comment because I know many professional men including those in the military, that prioritize their job and status before fatherhood. It's why I left the military early, I was missing out on too much even tho the leaders with over 20 years told me not to worry about it.

I wish the modern MMA fans would know Bas Rutten more (and Pancrase too while we're at it). Also 100% recommended to watch his fights commentated by himself, they're all on his KZbin channel.
@vernitico4 жыл бұрын
@Chris Ayala " would have probably been undefeated his whole career if he had ground knowledge from the beginning." He fought Ken while having very little knowledge of ground fighting and Ken was juiced to the max when he fought Bas so Ken had a massive advantage. Also Pancrase wasn't exactly on Bas's side, they taught him wrong defensive techniques against Ken's submission holds, that's why Ken beat Bas with a knee bar so easily in their second fight.
@MrFelixify4 жыл бұрын

If Bas had a ground game from the beginning, something would've had to compensate. He might not have been as competitive on his feet vs Maurice Smith and Guy Metzger (both kick boxers) for example. Also TK was ahead of Bas in points (effective grappling and octagon control) in their UFC #1 contender's match. After a stalemate (boredom) stand up, Bas seized the last minute opportunity to daze TK, then finish him. Bas may have been ambitious about challenging Frank Shamrock for his middleweight title. Or he may have had doubts about a rematch vs Kevin Randleman at heavyweight, knowing he safely had Frank's number. Bas was truly great but not in my personal GOAT Mt. Rushmore. My picks are: Fedor, Anderson Silva, GSP and Jon Jones.

@@WhatwouldRoddyPiperdo i think its a bad for a good, because of the state athletic comissions they had to have set of rules but i agree the boxing style points system is bullshit, the ground & pound style is not very entertaining. However on the "WWE style" the early mma had some aspects of it as well, with freak show fights that were not technical but sold tickets, i guess that since they cant do such matchups they have to rely on trashtalk and getting heat to sell tickets, however i agree we dont have this aura of larger than life fighters with wild personas that got super over with the fans, once in a while we get a conor mcgregor that is super good at trashtalking but with him came an entire bus of conor wannabees (hello sean o'malley). Last point is since wwe style pro wrestling is dying out and their only competition in their field are indy garbage wrestlers looking like bums 80% of the time, mma has taken their spot of big money drawing fighting sport (worked or real), and while the pro-wrestling marketing is over the top, it helped draw huge money consistently back in the day with regular sold out crowds so you cant blame american mma for trying to emulate them, they try to appeal to the masses with more mainstream friendly fighters and marketing strategies

I love that Bas inspired me to use body hits, open hand strikes, ground game training, and literally outright lunacy in the willingness to fight in general. My ability to idolize and shape myself after "good fighters" starts with men like Shamrock and Rutten. Their tenacity pushed me to train harder and understand more and more of how proper fighters operate in order to become so skilled in not only knocking out, but submitting opponents. This breakdown is great. The video definitely deserves more views than it has had.
