This worked poorly against him as time went on, he gained fame, and people got too afraid of him to attack and initiate against him. The goating was a tactic to mask his rising age, declining reaction time, and fixed play style. I don't think it was ever a non-serious tactic. It was him recognizing that, in order to play as a counter initiator, he had to take some risks and rely on his head movement to help him survive.

A wrestling dependent fighter like Chael or a close brawler like Wanderlei benefits the most from supplements. Silva's style really was not oriented around big shots or flashy takedowns but technical superiority-which no amount of PEDs can achieve. Obviously PEDs helped to an extent, but not enough to lower top 10 status.

And Silva's showboating was always a part of his style, to get his opponents to open up so Silva could land counters. Against Weidman, it didn't work and Weidman succeeded in spite of Silva's taunts and limbo dancing, not because of it. Silva didn't taunt in the rematch and guess what? Weidman only beat him even harder until the leg break.

Jon Jones was also unstoppable during his tenure. Fedor also never had a fight in his prime where he wouldn't have won pretty much every round. Anderson Silva on the other hand was knocked down multiple times standing up and then and smashed on the ground for 4 rounds until he pulled a lucky submission when Chael got careless. That to me is not "unstoppable" like the other fighters I mentioned. However I do think that Anderson Silva is one of the best of all time. Just not "unstoppable".

I seen his fight against Chris Leben, and after defeating Forrest Griffin, I knew he was the real damn deal. I started UFC viewing late with season 1 of the ultimate fighter.
