How GOOD was Ben Askren Actually?
For a long time in his career, Ben Askren was considered to be one of the best fighters to not fight in the UFC. And the proof in that was his undefeated record of 18-0 with 1 no contest, which he built from 2009 to 2017. But when Askren finally did enter the UFC in 2019, he did not find the same success as he had before. So my question is, how good was Ben Askren actually?

Well said. I couldn’t agree more. Clearly Ben Askren is an extraordinary athlete. Personally I feel as if he was too willing to take on the publicly trash talking persona that many people love to hate and this came back to haunt his public image in the long run when I think it’s most likely antithetical to who he truly is which is just another guy who is a decent sportsman but when selling pay per views and tickets etc becomes another aspect of an athletes existence , for short term gain of hyping up the fans many people resort to that kind of behavior. It didn’t help any when everyone started to see Conor Mcgregor making untold millions with his boxing match against Floyd May weather setting him up for 10 lifetimes financially. After him that appears to be the recipe for the big pay days because just dominating and knocking people out as we’ve seen just isn’t enough to get to that next level of money for the fighter.

I wrestled in the same division as Askren in high school and what was true then was the same now. He was not well-rounded at all. He could do one thing but he could do that one thing so damn well and so explosively powerful that it was practically unstoppable. It's like a freight train. You know it's coming, you know what it's going to do. Good luck stopping it. That one-dimensional aspect makes him both one of the top tier wrestlers but also severely limits him as seen when he enters elite competition. In the olympics you saw it. When he entered UFC you saw it. He is not THE GOAT but when it comes to a takedown he has to be mentioned as one of the most elite take down grapplers in MMA. He had no striking, his submission game and ground & pound was alright but he could take his opponent down over and over again. The fact that he was getting stuffed match after match in UFC speaks highly to his hip problems. His "special sauce" was having just so much explosive power that he could not be stopped so if he was being stopped over and over again, nod to his opponents but also at 34 after doing that practically nonstop for 20 years, biology and time did what most of his opponents could not do: stopped him. Even still the fact that Masvidal gambled on an incredibly ballsy and risky knee strike as opposed to actually fighting Askren says A LOT about his elite talent. He could absolutely hang with the best that UFC could handle but because he was so one-dimensional if he fought opponents that could handle his take downs he started to struggle. Moving on to Jake Paul the only thing I can think of is he was paid a LOOOOT of money. He's 36, he's years in retirement and he entered into a striking match. Anyone who thought Askren wasn't going down fast was delusional. He's a skilled athlete but he is not a boxer, never has been and never will be. Fighting someone 12 yrs younger than him who has the $$$ to go through serious training is kind of ridiculous. I have no doubt if it had been a true MMA fight it would have gone differently but basically Askren was probably paid a truck load of cash to take a dive for a youtuber.

I think what he meant to say was that “Ben Askren was one of the first fighters to show how effective scramble wrestling is effective in mma”. It was pretty uncommon pre Askren for wrestlers to wrestle that style. This style is a last resort to defend a takedown but it’s popular today now. I do agree with you on some of the fighters you listed though and Askren should be put on that list as well.

Kiiyons not stupid he knows what he is saying, the traditional ground and pound style which Coleman, Hendricks Randleman and Ortiz use is totally different to Askrens style. Askrens style is more towards the high pressure/intensity style of wrestling which tires out opponents due to the high output.

Ben deserves credit. He built Bellator's and One's welterweight divisions. One of the best wrestlers in MMA, and I'm sure that, in a pure wrestling match, he could out grapple Khabib and GSP, and put a good fight on Usman and Colby (He was able to outwrestle Woodley quite easily). ryanmazdaLAX he didn’t win that fight. Herb stopped the fight cause of a headlock but didn’t when Ben got slammed and got his face pounded.

@@jadelees9005 cuz he came back and won. If herb didn't stop it Robbie's head would popped like a melon. Good officiating in my eyes saving Robbie from himself. Don't say he woulda got out either. The other two were legit losses and a brutal knockout

@@jadelees9005 that was not a head lock. Robbie Lawler was on queer street. Anyone with grappling experience saw that.

Good god. He is going to embarrass MMA fighters everywhere with this boxing match against Jake Paul. Dude is going to get wrecked. Amazed at how little self-awareness he has.

IDK but Askren used to have a decent striking. I guess he was old for UFC.

Pure wrestler. Not well rounded enough for the top level competition in UFC. Ben was a one trick pony that would have done well in early UFC days but today's guys can do it all. Big respect for Ben's grappling skills though, he was a specialist. GSP had all his strengths/ none of his weaknesses, would've beat him.
