This is so helpful as a foster I bring new dogs into my home and have had so many questions about body language and heathy play based on these experiences and how to better manage those introductions. This is so thorough, helpful, and informative 🙏🏽 thank you!

Excellent! As a dog trainer, this confirms and supports my positive work. I really like the many breaks and step by step approach. Do you have any guidance on how to get clients to understand slow is better? This is very well done! Thanks so much Mara and Emily!

For me I tell them how slow I intro my own dogs and how they never bully fight or argue and how close their relationship is. And what would happen if I rushed it... potential fights and danger of injury.

This was really helpful and gave me some behavior to watch for with my dog. He gets over-aroused easily so I don't think he is there yet but definitely something to work towards

My terrier gets over aroused easily so when he plays with someone new, the first few times or sometimes all the times. I recall and take breaks and it really helps him to play more appropriately. :)

This was really helpful, but what do you suggest for initial greetings for dogs that experience barrier frustration? I am certain I couldn't introduce my dog to another through a fence.
@kikopup3 жыл бұрын
This is my answer- But there are many things you could do. I would work on calm settles on mats with dogs at a distance and do multiple sessions teaching the dogs to be calm in each others presence, and getting reinforced for looking at each other in a calm way. Then you could have them closer as they succeed, go for calm walks together at a distance. Take turns following each other from a distance, arcing past each other. This video is for social dogs, a longer process is needed to teach a dog who is worried or aroused. Its a good idea if you do have a dog with barrier frustration and leash frustration to work at the distance they are comfortable with other dogs (for some dogs this might be 20 feet away from the fence) to begin with. And in between training not to allow any negative or arousing experiences such as reacting to dogs through a fence at home or through a window or door etc. As those reactions can make the dog more likely to act antisocial around dogs.

Really helpful video! This taught me a lot about body language and I never really knew anything about dog play and that it has pauses, I just thought that they... play? Haha! I used to take my puppy to my local dog school where they had these puppy play dates, and now looking back, I can see that my dog was never comfortable interacting with other dogs. She would tense up and look away while the other dogs would sniff her and chase her around. To this day she has never really shown interest in playing with other dogs and I wonder if that's just the way she is or if I caused it by taking her to puppy play dates with dogs she didn't want to interact with? I don't really mind that she isn't social towards other dogs, she is very friendly to humans, but some other dog owners do seem to think I'm being, well, a bad owner for not letting my dog play with their dog or not taking her to dog parks.
@kikopup3 жыл бұрын
You know, when I went to puppy class I was so careful and protective of my sensitive dog and she chooses not to interact with strange dogs even with lots of careful interactions. As an adult she takes quite a few meetings before she wants to warm up and feel safe to play. And she only wants to play with gentle dogs. I'm pretty sure you just have a sensitive one :)

So much wonderful information in this video! I’m going to have to watch it a couple of times to absorb everything. Our dog definitely has preferred play partners and it’s really helpful to know more about what behaviors I can watch for to see who he actually wants to play with - and if the other dog wants to play as well :) Thank you so much for featuring Mara!

May I make a request for a topic? I have two young puppies and they are fine being groomed. However they like to bite the brush (playful behavior). I can't find anything on this that doesn't involve punishment (found one using a prong collar, the other involved "bonking" the dog on top of the head with a rolled up towel; I don't want to use either of these methods).

Awe, Its pretty awesome though when you have a super social herding breed. Having three that are really not interested in dogs makes them easy to walk where there are dogs but inside Id really love them to want to play

This is helpful, thank you Emily and Mara! 💕 We have a new 12 week old puppy who just can't "take a hint" from our senior dog. Puppy always is ready to play (jumping and nipping at the senior pup's face), while senior mostly wants to be left alone. They're so difficult to separate, because they live together in our home... re-directing constantly is exhausting, but I'm doing my best. You've helped me so much ❤️

YES! I am also exhausted redirecting my little pup from my older dogs hehe. But it will all be worth it in the end :)

This is great information.So interesting to see the process where the dogs meet on leash. My dog is a bit anxious and insecure and he is much better meeting unknown dogs on leash,he feels safer and I can redirect him or we can 'Just let's go' and walk away. So many other dog owners have said 'He would be better off the leash' but that is when it can go horribly wrong, either if he is overwhelmed by the other dog or if he goes in too strong or rude.So this totally validates what I have learnt by (ugh) trial and error with my dog. I think the off leash comments from other people are about dogs who are frustrated on the leash and more relaxed off leash, but your video has shown that the relaxation is the key, not the leash. So thank you! 😀 I just wish I'd known it earlier to help my poor dog, but we got there in the end and now he has some great doggy friends.

Helen, trust your gut, other people just know about what their OWN dog does well with usually. And all dogs are different. There is no harm in taking introductions slow. For me, the slower the more successful. For my own dogs sometimes I just want them to hang out with certain dogs for at least a few times without going nose to nose so they are absolutely comfortable when it does happen. Others of my dogs can meet within seconds and be totally happy about it.

Thanks Emily, this is super helpful. My 9 months old has a few buddies that he plays with really nicely, just like Mara described. Then sometimes at a dog park he meets dogs that would just chase and chase him then pins him on the ground. To me it’s so obvious my dog is not having fun at all and is just getting bullied, but the owners invariably tell me “it’s just playing” 🤦🏼♀️ is there a good way to separate the dogs when my dog is getting overwhelmed and chased? My dog is pretty good at recall and he’s run toward me but he gets chased as he comes to me, so sometimes he just runs past me (so that he’s not caught). When my dog is pinned down, I physically removed him grabbing him by his harness, but usually the overwhelming dog doesn’t let go & wants to get on top of him again.

Very helpful! My pup (6 months old, terrier) is super playful and generally loves meeting other dogs, but he tends to play very rough if the other dog isn't a runner. Should I intervene and try to steer him in a more friendly direction? Any general tips on how? He's loose in the body and seems happy with it, but the other dog doesn't always appreciate excessive biting and growling. Thank you for providing great content, I've been using it a lot.

This is was so interesting, thank you. My dog is an ex-street-dog who grew up in a pack of strays, so his dog communication is A+ (Dog is his first language, he's learned Human pretty well but will always have a strong "dog accent!"🤣 ) As a result I've never had to teach him any of this, he does it all naturally, so it's fascinating to watch it broken down. I can identify so many of his behaviours in this! The next dog I get might not have grown up the same way, so it's really good to see which skills I should encourage when I have to teach it myself. I'm going to be watching all our dog friends extra intently next time they play!

Listening to this for the second time, so detailed, I love it! Best video on the topic I have ever seen and very relevant right now as my family is trying to introduce our hovawart 5 month old puppy with my grandma's 8 y/o greater swiss mountain dog. The thing is the older one is giant, easily 50-60 kg and very excited and barks and so he scares the puppy. First intro wasn't great, second one was better, but the techniques mentioned here make more sense and now I know what to look more in their body language
@kikopup3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree. That's why I asked Mara to present. As it will help so many people. One thing I work on if the dogs are over excited or fearful is learning to settle first at a distance from each other and then near each other as an added first step. Training them to just ignore each other and not bother each other. By learning to be calm around each other first it can really help prevent things going badly when they interact.

Try different toys of different textures. And try playing keep away games with the toys, to make her more interested in them.

Omg I needed this! My dog LOVES other dogs and we frequent dog parks so he can run and get a lot of exercise. He is almost always wanting to play with any other dog but he comes on a little strong. The tips on how to shape good behavior is something I almost never see in training suggestions and there doesn't seem to be a good consensus on whether/when humans should intervene. My dog is very vocal but starts barking and gets way above threshold when more than one dog is involved in playing. These tips are super helpful. I feel a little like I've been training in the dark with trial and error (where error leads to angry and upset dog owners). Thank you!

Although having dogs meet on leash provides more control, I heard that meeting on leash can be a terrible idea as it can cause dogs to feel trapped. Does it depend on the dog? Should it always be on leash?
@kikopup3 жыл бұрын
Yes, this process is for social dogs, and the leash greeting would come after the dog could be redirected away and said hi behind the barrier. Just to walk toward another dog and have them meet could not go well so thats why there is so much that happens before then. You can teach meeting on leash as a behavior but for some dogs it takes much more training than others. I start my own clients having their dog meet another dogs butt for 1 milisecond before a lets go away as the first initial meet on leash. And build on that.
