I can imagine this guy giving a slav-squat piece to camera at the top of K2 in jeans and a hoodie like 10 years from now lol.

I love your videos, I have watched them all and I’m looking forward for the rest of the US high points. Still loved this one, it does not look easy in any way, specially taking into consideration that your dad had to quit.

Or one down, five to go if you count Denali & Aconcagua on the same continent(which some people do.)

What a coincidence. Laura Leanne also climbed Kilimanjaro & plans on climbing Denali.

Congrats on summiting!! Looks like you were on the Lemosho route. I did that with my son (age 62 and 30) and our entire group of 16 summited on 1 Jan 2020. What was amazing was the lack of snow on the crater rim when you were there and six months later when I went up the entire mountain from about 18,000 up was covered in deep snow. That was a great day, but the Barranco Wall was probably the most fun. I would like to say it was challenging except for the porters flying up it all around us like mountain goats with heavy loads on their head. I hope to do Aconcagua at age 66 but that will probably be the only other 7 summit for me. Denali just doesn't look like any fun. Good luck on the rest of your adventures; I will be watching!

Thank you for your comment! That was indeed the route that we did - it was really amazing. The Barranco Wall was definitely the best day of the entire trip, although it was challenging in the best possible way. Very surprising to hear about the snow when you were up there! Being at the equator it's certainly not a seasonal thing, must have just been exceptionally cold and wet up there at the time! Either way, best of luck with Aconcagua. That one is supposed to be very fun as well, definitely close to the top of my 7 summits list after Elbrus.

I know Garrett plans on climbing Mount McKinley/Denali. I’m not sure if he plans Mount Everest,Aconcagua,Mount Elbrus,Mount Vinson or Carstenez Peak though.

Hey Garrett, Surprised I missed this video until just now. I have been subscribed (with bell notification) since last spring/summer. Anyways, WOW!!! Didn’t expect this highpoint just yet from you and your dad?! I’m impressed. I’ll probably never do this one due to financial constraints. I’m sure this one superseded Hawaii’s budget by a long shot?! What’s next in the states this summer? This summer I’m going for the entire Northeast and the 5 southwestern states, leaving just the hardest Northwestern 5 in the lower 48 states for me to conquer in 2021 and beyond. 😀🤞🏼 Take care and stay safe! 👍🏼

The hiking definitely was! It was 45 miles with 15,000 ft of vertical but that was seriously nothing compared to the difficult of the nights. It was below freezing Fahrenheit in our sleeping bags every single night and 2 hours of sleep was a huge success if you could get it. The nights were easily the hardest physical thing I've done in my entire life, but the hiking wasn't so bad!
@YourBoyAlex
@YourBoyAlex 5 жыл бұрын
@@grtshw I give you a massive congrats to that! Now is that the hardest high point on earth? Probably not. I think that maybe Denail or Everest may be harder.

@@YourBoyAlex I talked with a guy at the highpointing convention who did a presentation about his BIG hikes. The presenter was a guy who climbed the Worlds 7 Summits. I asked him which ones were the hardest, he said it was easily Denali. I was NOT expecting that. He claimed Everest was easier because of the crew he had helping him. I think it was because they provide the equipment. I know full well you NEED to buy the equipment yourself for Denali.

@@grtshw So, does this mean you'll be going for the 7 Summits? If so, I ABSOLUTELY look forward to those video's. Good luck and stay safe. Edit: I forgot to ask the 1st time lol, did you manage to get Illinois's high point this year?
@grtshw
@grtshw 5 жыл бұрын
@@YourBoyAlex It's definitely not the hardest on earth. There are even points that are not the highest in their respective areas that are much, much harder. Annapurna is probably the most difficult summit on earth. As far as the seven summits, I would think Everest, then Denali close behind. They could switch around, depending on your body's natural reactions to lack of oxygen and physical stress respectively.

Sick vid man. And a great start to a massive achievement in mountaineering. Just going off of an estimate. How long do you think it’ll be before you get to the Big E!
@grtshw
@grtshw 3 жыл бұрын
It's a good question! Probably gonna save it for last to get the most 20k+ experience possible, and hopefully to allow time for regulation to get put in place so I don't get stuck up there and die because of the line to reach the summit. I'm hoping to take them down one at a time as cost allows, so it might mean that I have to wait until im out of school and making some money before I make any real progress. I'm nearly 22 so I think if I had them all done by 30 (in 2030) that would be a pretty big accomplishment

Love your content if you don't mind me asking what is the cost to summit Kilimanjaro?
@grtshw
@grtshw 2 жыл бұрын
This was some time ago now, but if I remember correctly it was about $5,000 per person including the flights to and from the US, the housing accommodations in Tanzania before and after the actual climb, the transportation on the ground, the porters, the guides, and the permits. Only thing not included in that figure was the price of gear because that varies a lot based on what you already have and whether you decide to buy or rent.

Well we're actually at a point now in the highpointing process that literally every remaining US state has to be done between June and August for weather reasons, so unfortunately it will be a little while before we can get back out there...

@@grtshw ok good i thought you were gonna stop uploading. Just saying you are one of the most intresting youtubers and I love you're videos. I love hiking, but i mostley hike in the east. I did marcy mansfield and Washington, and i was on a backpacking trip in nh with 14 peaks, and what about Illinois its not realy high, i think it is just a drive up a hill, and its my home state.

@@greekmythdude9053 So glad to hear that! We actually do want to get Illinois out of the way before the summer, but it is tough because the land owners there only open the gates about 8 specific days per year. We are struggling to find a time that works for us to make an appearance there when it's actually open. In any case, thanks so much for the support, and good luck with your hiking!

That scramble is legit, man. Did the guide say what the Grade was? That looks at least comparable to Emory Peak (TX) but longer.

Also, that's CRAZY your dad abandoned the hike! He's not too down about it is he? With any hiker, that can put a massive damper on ambitions for some of the Western points.

The "wall" is about 1000 feet tall. I just found online that it's considered a class 4 scramble (according to wikipedia: "Simple climbing, with exposure. A rope is often used. Natural protection can be easily found. Falls may well be fatal"). Not sure what the grade was but it had to be at least a 45 degree angle in terms of the total path.
@IanNafziger
@IanNafziger 4 жыл бұрын
@@grtshw Class 4 is pretty tough scrambling. Emory is the same way, but not nearly as tall--closer to 50 feet--and I was terrified during that climb because there is a 1000-foot drop into a canyon immediately to your right on the main route. Kudos to you for that feat! What's next on the itinerary once things thaw out? I'm heading east for John Muir Week to cross off Woodall Mountain, spend some time in the Smokies, and make an attempt at Mt. Mitchell. A charity thru-hike on the 30-mile Eagle Rock Loop in Arkansas is also planned, and August is going to have the Great Highpointing Road Trip to attempt Wheeler, King's Peak, and Mt. Elbert. Y'all are welcome to tag along on any of those this year :)
