Nui is great because she acts opposed and against the heros in not only a regular narrative sense, but in a sort of mechanic sense in how she breaks the rules set up by the setting. Where she sort of bends the reality in an animation sense because it is an animated show. Where Ryuko and like want to be taken seriously, Nui just demands it all the while breaking the show around her. And is why even a scene she seems to gets angry at Mako is cool because Mako is a character who in no way wants to be taken seriously and undermines what Nui tries to do.

Honestly, Kill La Kill's energy helps it stand out from most anime. Yes, someone could just say, "It's Trigger", but that isn't just it. KLK has this very fun, hotblooded appeal along with lively animation and character portrayals. Even the nudity manages to be wacky, yet not irritate me with its comedy by being truthful to itself.
@hemangchauhan28647 жыл бұрын
Pretty nice summary. For me, KLK (and Gintama) have set standard for "Wacky Shows (TM)" Their confidence in their silliness and their honesty in their craft is what makes them stand out. And that takes a lot of effort.

@KuroHinata03217 жыл бұрын
I agree! And with respect to the nudity not being irritating, I normally can't stand unnecessary fanservice, but the thing about Kill la Kill is that it doesn't feel out of place; it's part of this entire style of goofy hyper-exaggeration, and a lot of the fun is that a show that makes itself look as ridiculous/questionable as possible at a glance actually makes it work, by virtue of the skillful rapport between its writing and execution and style, and pulls it off as an all-around solid show. It's constantly poking fun at itself, and it's not disrespecting or insulting its audience in the way it goes about its silliness; it feels genuine, and like the creators are approaching things with a self-awareness that really doesn't come across in a lot of shows, if that makes any sense. It has a unique charm to it, and the passion and energy that went into this show is undeniable. I really appreciate people like Digibro bringing attention to a lot of the amazing aspects of Kill la Kill. Honestly, I wish the Kill la Kill discussion didn't so often start with 'but fanservice though,' but I guess it's unavoidable since that is the first thing most people see/hear about it. What's unfortunate is how many people don't get past that and realize that it's so much more; folks label it 'Problematic (TM)' and go with the mentality that a show having some flaws means you're not allowed to oh, I don't know, acknowledge those flaws and enjoy it anyway as a whole.

My experience with kill la kill When i first saw Kill la Kill i ignored it, i ignored it because it looked stupid, unnessary ecchi(coming from a guy who likes ecchi, best example is to love-ru darkness), and had a boring plot. Then weeks later after my suggestion box bugged me too much i watched a clip of Satsuki transforming from episode 3, i thought the transformation was meh but that's not what i noticed, that music. IT FELT LIKE AN ORGASM FOR MY EARS!!!! That was basically my first step, a little later i saw the whole fight for that episode. Sometime later youtube bombared my suggestion box more with clips from episodes 16-18 and i watched more and more clips learning the plot. At some point when it got to episode 20 i just gave up and watched it. I was fucking wrong, this series is fun as hell, odd, and really good action. Most amazing part to me is it is the first and still the only show to give girls slutty outfits, give a reason for why they are like that and why bullets don't work even when wearing said outfit, AND stayed consistant on that with both genders on that front. That i found most amazing. The soundtrack for this series was amazing, the ending fight i found disappointing but then final final OVA ending made up for that with its own crazyness. 9.5/10 would watch 200 more times.

I like Kill la Kill, but it should be pretty obvious from the beginning if your going to like it or not, and I don't really see why people who couldn't get into the weird unique style early on would continue watching the show. The show just gets weird and weirder later on, so even if they sat through the whole thing, the later episodes are just going to be more of the weird stuff they don't like.

If I dislike a show, I'll call it a bad show. The general consensus being converse to my opinion doesn't prohibit me from taking that stance. Even if a large group of people agrees that some specific qualities of a show make it good, someone may not care for or even expressly hate those qualities. A bad show is essentially something that doesn't suit the tastes of the person calling it bad.

I don't know why you're talking about Kill la Kill like it's some intellectual masterpiece that is hard to grasp for most people, because it's not. I understand what Kill la Kill is about and it's underlying themes, but I still don't prefer it to many other things I like. It just doesn't resonate with me as a story but it does when it comes to aesthetic though. Man, I couldn't agree more. Although your metric for what makes a 10/10 anime a 10/10 is more subjective than mine, the fact remains that Kill la Kill serves as the masterpiece example of anime. This is how I feel about KLK mostly but I have some other reasons too. I've always been a fan of the magical girl genre and seeing it ripped to shreds and rolled in with some mecha themes (among others) was a blast. I liked how the show, while very risque, also presented a criticism of sex appeal for the sake of sex appeal by distracting you from it with over the top action and making Ryuko and Senketsu feel like a fighting duo... And yet it manages to keep its own fanservice absolutely genuine when it goes out of its way to remind you that the characters are fighting in string bikinis and thongs.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force is another good comparison. The fun thing about Trigger is they usually have some parody or other form of meta entertainment folded into their product. This isn't as present in episode 1 however. React, just watch a couple more episodes. I'm sure you can spare enough patience for 6 minutes even if you still don't like it. I also didn't like Space Patrol Luluco at first, but godamn am I glad I stuck with it. So far the only Trigger-associated animes I've disliked are Inoue Battle, which doesn't really count since it was a LN adaptation, and Kiznaivers since it's fairly anticlimactic.

What I liked about Kill la Kill and most Imaishi anime is that, unlike most anime, characters are mostly blunt and honest. While there are examples in each of certain characters hiding their intentions from others, most of the shows have characters with color, honest personalities clashing and bumping against each other in fun and exciting ways.
@Mordalon7 жыл бұрын
I understand that, what I'm thinking of is more about characters that are so self-restrained and unconfident that often the reason they fail is their reluctance. While this is an extreme, a classic example is Simon in the first half of Gurren Lagann. This aspect of him is made even more prominent by him being next to and compared to Kamina, one of the most unrestrained, unapologetic, and boisterous personalities in anime. My problem is a more general version of the classic Sitcom miscommunication trope where you yell at everyone to "Just Talk!". As someone who is often worried about how I'm perceived by others, is always second-guessing myself, and is bad at communicating, it's kind of a power-fantasy to see a world where most characters are confident in who they are and are unafraid to confront others honestly and are able to clearly and effectively do so.
@Mordalon7 жыл бұрын
It's not just romances. Anything with a lot of political maneuvering or a social/corporate hierarchy that the characters have to follow in order to progress. Both Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill have segments where the main character is forced to go along with the system for some time, and then shit hits the fan and the release of tension is satisfying. Like when Simon gets out of prison to fight the moon, or when Nui reveals her half of the scissor blade after the structured tournament episodes and all hell breaks loose. I guess it's the kind of escapism where you wish you lived in a world where everyone just plainly stated who they were, no dancing around issues or having to go along with people you don't like.

I love everything about this show. But perhaps my favourite aspect is the fact that there is no romantic interest for Ryuko as it just wouldn't fit in with the story, she is selfish, motivated and doesn't need a stupid romance shoehorned in to give her depth, she is given depth in other ways, for example she is selfish and socially awkward at the start, a lone wolf but she gains a friend/father figure in Senketsu, an adoptive family in the Mankanshokus and a bff/sister in Mako (hints towards yuri between Ryuko and Mako but you can interpret that however you want to) and even a real sister in Satsuki, by the end her goals are still selfish but she protects and cares for the people she has come to view as her friends and family. She is not a romantic character and I love that the creators kept her a lone wolf, but gave her more of a familial gain. Although I kind of ship her with Mako at the very end.

Not sure if this has ever been confirmed, but in Japanese the word "wear" is "着る”, now the non-kanji form "きる”, if you try to say it in english, it pronounces "Kiru." Now, as a native Japanese, "Kiru" can offaly sound a lot like "Kill" in japanese, perhaps the creators behind the series may have gotten the title inspiration from said lingo? This is just a theory by the way. Also another word for "きる” in another japanese word is "切る”, which means "Cut." So perhaps another double lingo meaning. So, in essene it could mean Wear la Wear, which fits with the context of the series core of "wearing" for battle. Example of this would be from Death Note. Where in Japan, the word "Killer" in english to Japanese sounds like "Kira." Show less REPLY

Kill la Kill really is a very interesting show, especially for me, because at the same time that I was watching it, I was also watching another then popular show - Attack on Titan, and it's very interesting to see the difference between them. Attack on Titan is a show that takes itself VERY seriously. It thinks that it has a message, a story to tell. It thinks that it's important and it's emanating pathos and 'epicness'. And it falls completely flat, because it's just a generic shounen anime for prepubescent boys. I mean, I'm a few years older than you, Digi, and I don't know about you, but I simply could not watch it. I did finish it, just to see if maybe it gets better at the end, and I regretted wasting so much time on it. Kill la Kill on the other hand knows perfectly well that it is ridiculous and it does not take itself seriously. And thanks to that it can go all out and be as balls to the wall over the top as it wants. And it's awesome. The imagery, the music (I agree that Blumenkranz is epic, especially since it's sung in a very bad German with a horrible Japanese accent, which somehow makes it even better), the characters. It's such a beautiful cocktail and I enjoyed every moment of watching it.

I agree so much abt the AOT thing. I honestly still have no idea why that show got so popular and KLK didn’t. AOT was boring and cringey and it’s overhyped as fuck. Kill La Kill is genuinely an amazing show from start to finish and really deserves every last inch of the praise it gets.

AOT is popular the same way Game of Thrones is popular. Lets get that fact straight asap.

ӿøῇχէ You’re delusional. Attack on titans is one of the most well written and artistically complex anime’s out there. There is nothing “generic” about Attack on Titan and the show takes its self seriously because guess what....it IS a serious show with lots of brutal action, mysteries, warped ideology, and mindless monsters whom are trying to wipe out humanity. The story is cohesive, unpredictable with great details has great pacing.

Kill la Kill is love, Kill la Kill is life. I'm not sure if it's my absolute favorite anime. What I am sure is that last year when I was going through a particularly dry and trying part of my life, watching this show made me re-define and understand better what I wanted to do in life and what I stood for. I hope someday I can make a story as insane and yet as heartfelt as this show. Hats off to you, Trigger.

"I don't consume media only to see a technician executing something perfectly." "To see something that I care about being cared about by someone else." I resonate with both these sentiments. I see the technician exemplified in the art of most mainstream Marvel and DC comics, where the art is usually proficient and the writing professional, but something in the writing or the characters lacks heart and/or isn't trying to communicate to me anything deeper, or something I can take away. Shows like Kill La Kill, Gurren Lagann, FLCL, and Evangelion, have that extra spark to them which, leaves a lasting impact. Something I hope to reproduce in my own work someday.

I rewatched Kill la Kill about a week ago and after 5 or so years, yeah, the anime is still perfect for me too. When it originally aired, I remember having entire weeks basically boil down to the new Kill la Kill episode at the end. I won't get really deep about why I love the anime, because it's on many levels. All I'm going to say is for the past 5 years, I've had a scissor blade necklace hanging from the mirror of my car as a reminder for that series to never leave my mind, because I feel like it impacted and shaped me in a very tangible fashion.

Akatsubasa ,I'd say its an alright show that had a really good start. Sort of went down a bit in quality with some pacing problems and the characters have been kinda losing my interest personally. But I'd still say its worth a watch.

Thank you for making this video, it made me consider something new. Your view of art is the same as Aldous Huxley's: art appeals to, and addresses the emotions and personal stakes of both it's characters and its audience. It didn't quite sink in for me with "The Asterisk War Sucks", but now that you've spelled it out so clearly, I couldn't help but notice. Also, if you haven't read "Brave New World", you totally should because there are good odds you'll love it; it takes the idea that emotion and unhappyness are inextricably related, and runs with it.

Something that I feel a lot of people can not understand (including myself) is that a piece of media can be good in all the right places and have effort and care put into it and still not appeal to someone. Like Digi and Death Parade I have the same thoughts with me and Cowboy Bebop. I think these shows do their jobs to a brilliantly level when I look at them objectively but I will never be able to appreciate them to the same level most people do because of just tiny reasons. I don't like the Space Cowboy genre and probably never will since I don't like westerns all that much, the setting just doesn't appeal to me. Even though I will never really like Cowboy Bebop I can say that it hits all the factors it needs to with perfect levels of execution.
@TheRedname6 жыл бұрын
Cowboy Bepop isn't a western, though. Every episode has a different genre and the setting itself is science fiction.

While not as often repeated, the semi-recurring bit of Gamagori falling from the sky is the best, especially how in both the first and last episode he does it while laughing. Best part of both episodes.
