Damo is discussing the nature of emotions, feelings and moods. He looks at the three categories of dealing with emotions:
1- ending them
2- following them
3- converting them
These are three common approaches taken towards the emotions in contemporary and classical spiritual practice.

Very interesting talk I always come back to the teachings of David r Hawkins and his work withbapplied kinesiology and the scale of emotions. He always says the scale to which you can let go of negative emotions is the scale to which you can reach peace. It was a great read and definitely something that works for me quite well.

I've often said, there is a difference between anger and angry, or fear and being afraid. The first is the emotion, the second is holding on to it. I think feeling the emotion is natural and caused because we don't understand things. But holding on to those feelings (attachment) or not wanting them at all (aversion) is where we go astray. This is of course much easier said than done, and though I know the theory, putting it into practice is much much harder

great practical overview, paying attention with more curiosity versus concern over the feeling allows the experience to flow unhampered. Thank you!

Super helpful. We are often told to name the emotion and this way exercise control over the feelings.

This is a great & clear talk, pithy and to the point, on a very important area of personal growth. Much to reflect on here, I fully agree that understanding emotions being so important as a precursor to the deeper work of the internal meditative and mindful-self-awareness arts'. I particularly like the observation of the 'historic weight' that a named emotion carries. Brilliant stuff.

Really insightful Damo thank you! Love the idea of separating the feeling from the label. I guess my battle lies in simply not consciously realizing that I’m actually in any particular emotion or feeling state until after it has passed.

I want to refer to The Presence Process book, authored by Maichel Brown, were he explains how to let the flow of "emotional energy" move through you, feeling it, without do nothing to change it (if rage, projecting it to others, if fear, running away...) and look how your life progressively change to a better wellbeing when you stop reacting but letting the inner storms flow. Thank you all masters!

Very true. Attachment is the key, after all. Whether you like the emotion and want to keep it, or you want to destroy it, it is the same in the end. Both keep you stuck.

Thank you for the interesting definitions of emotional vs somatic experience. I wish this was common knowledge! Is sung breathing used to release the feelings that remain in the body due to attachment/resistance?

Lol ! Kill those emotion indeed. ( Not funny actually ). A child falls down scraps her knee ( feels ) the burn, cries, gets up and moves on. FEELING not emotion. It is the raw waves that come up and through us that which we experience. We filter and indeed get stuck in a mind fuck of old patterning. And is feeling another label, we obviously need a reference point. We are inundated with emtions, in my humble opinion, feel it all and move on. Easier said than done for most peeps cuz we've not been given the tools of how to. Some times I watch my own shitstorm unfold and embrace it until it fades into the ether, and sometimes it takes years even lifetimes to unfold. Right now we are dealing with children's remains being excavated from residential schools brining up layers of pain and suffering and feelings of loss of innocence. This real, this is true, peace to all beings

nice talk. Is it the case that imbalances of particular organs can cause emotional states to be more prevalent, or is it that getting lost in particular emotions can harm the organs? or both?

I’ve learned to both release trapped emotions from The Emotion Code, and to honor and reroute them using that same book. Nowadays when I honor a certain feeling, it goes away by me exhaling it.

I think the problem of labeling is overemphasised, and whether you differentiate feeling from emotion can be simply syntactic. The importance for me is in understanding the causality of emotion. In simple terms understand the reaction to our emotional state as being out of our control. Instead learn to respond to the emotion so that it's not affecting you, are more importantly those around you, in any negative way.

To me, this is the difference between a cultivator and a non-cultivator. The non-cultivator needs to develop emotional intelligence to the causation of their reactions so that they may live better. The labelling and identification of the emotion is not so much an issue to the non-cultivator, but to the one who seeks Union with the Dao, it’s a major barrier to evolution. There are often differences between the needs of different groups of people :)

Your repy made me realise the dichotomy between taking the 'cultivator' path and trying to progress as well as possible but, unfortunately when your development is not high enough, having to use non-cultivator methods. You did end your dialogue by relating to empathetic understanding of emotions in self and others which, to my 'non-cultivated' self is so important to achieve by whatever method and may even be more important than self-cultivation. Very grateful to you for taking the time out to reply.
