“Pursue what’s in your heart, and the universe will conspire to support you.” - Rich Roll
Are there times when we can get a better result by letting go? What role does pain tolerance play in addiction? Is a plant-based diet really that restrictive?
For endurance athlete, author, and podcaster Rich Roll, these kinds of questions are just the tip of the iceberg.
In today’s episode of Impact Theory, Rich and I explore the landscape of ideas ranging everywhere from spirituality and his experience with 12 Steps, all the way to plant-based protein, vegan bodybuilders, and everywhere in between.
So whether you or someone you love is struggling with addiction, you’re feeling out of touch with your purpose, or you simply want to know where to find the best vegan cheese on the planet, then this episode is for you.
SHOW NOTES:
00:00 | Introduction
00:56 | Spirituality and Trusting Your Intuition
08:16 | Solving Problems by Letting Go
21:21 | The Importance of Creative Constraints
27:26 | Hubris and Self-Understanding
47:53 | Relapse and Dealing With Failure
58:36 | The Path to Recovery From Addiction
1:05:36 | SriMu and Rich’s Experience With Veganism
1:17:52 | Plant-Based Dietary Choices and Longevity
QUOTES:
“The biggest leaps that I've made in terms of personal growth, and in terms of my career, the beautiful things that I've been able to accomplish, I think are part and parcel attributable to having an interior spiritual life.” [02:56]
“There were plenty of times when I wanted to jump ship and do the prudent, rational thing, because that's how I was raised. And that's what my education was all about. But having kind of come out the other side of it, I have a deeper appreciation for… the beauty in not always knowing.” [07:43]
“I think most people are walking around, totally unconnected from themselves. They don't understand why they do what they do. They continue to do the same things over and over and over again, they flog themselves, and yet decline the opportunity to really deconstruct that.” [34:28]
“If you have a very high pain tolerance, which a lot of addicts do, the fear or the pain associated with the change always exceeds the pain of their current situation. And it's not until or unless the pain of their current situation is so great, that overshadows the fear of doing something different.” [1:03:11]
“First of all, nobody should go on a diet, they should be trying to change their lifestyle habits in a manner that is sustainable.” [1:15:57]

That work is not addictive. I came from a home with workaholics and it was just as damaging as my cousins upbringing with alcoholic parents. I also lived with food addicts also. Gaslighting, manipulation, behavior control, shame, mothering, and martyrdom. Pretty standard in a home with justified addiction. Addiction is addiction regardless of the thing. The character defects are similar. Porn, work, food, phone, information, praise from others, rage, control, micromanaging, power, and status can be addictive. AA speaker Tom B speaks of emotional sobriety on KZbin basically explains how I get. I'm not religious but man does that guy nail the struggle...and the solution. I logic myself to death, my ego is my own intelligence used against ME and when I think I know, it's me just doing more explaining because I'm scared of not knowing, not fixing it or others, and allowing the river to flow instead of attempting to block it, hold it up or pretend like I have any control over it. Even when I do damn it up, I am forced to see the flood of destruction in which I am responsible. I make excuses for my relationship also. I did not have healthy models. My parents were obsessed with each other. Good co-dependents. I logically know addicts always finds door mat co-dependents masquerading as "strong woman" and man does the public give props to these relationships without seeing the unspoken dynamics at play.

Thank you for having this conversation Tom. As a Plant-Based eater for 10 years now I have often encountered the exact same questions you were posing to Rich. And the answers that Rich provided are very similar to what I learned. I too have felt “transformed” by this diet. I am clear-thinking, strong and energetic. I attribute that to my diet for the most part. I respect both of you and I praise you Tom for having an open mind, especially given that you have had guests that are clearly against. I especially appreciate that Rich said he is not tied to dogmatic thinking. I agree. If a finding comes along that completely negates the benefits of this diet then I will eat my hat and stop. No shame in that…. In the meantime let’s keep the conversation going!

Tom, hello again. Love the show, as usual. I have a Frase about money. I used to have a lot of money. My frase is: “ is okay to have money, just don’t let the money have you. Right now is the first time of my life that we as family are strongly just to survive, and I pray 🙏🏻 that something good will get out off this, I have faith. However as mom, of 3, I confess I am little nervous when it comes about money. You mentioned the money freedom, to me that’s it, the freedom to improve myself, to serve others, that’s been taking away from me. But I am still here, praying and keeping on going, some days is harder than the the others when you don’t have money for food or gas. But thanks to you!!!!!!!!!!and the guests on your show, it can be very therapeutic, thanks Tom.🙋‍♀️

I'm amazed by how little Tom knows about eating a whole food plant based diet. You really don't have to worry so much about sugar intake or glycemic index if your eating everything plant based and that is why Rich doesn't discuss it. Also, Rich was trying to explain why he doesn't have a main protein source. You don't need a main protein source if you eat plant based. Amino acids are in all plants. Instead of non vegans asking us where we get our protein, we should be asking more importantly where non vegans get all their fiber. There are so many great plant based doctors to learn from. People need to read the China Study and go from there.

You don’t need fiber on a carnivorous diet. Keto people get plenty of fiber from all their salads. The point of carnivore is to NOT have the fiber so you can heal your colitis, crohns or ibs from being vegan for too long ;)

This is a really narrow perspective. There are a plethora of examples where nutrients in plants does not equate to any bioavailability of said nutrient content. To add all that, to individual microbiome/health issues/epigenetics, your statement becomes even more obtuse 😂 There is nothing healthy about orthorexia 😂😂 Plant based eaters, are some of the most stressed out , defensive , judgemental, highly strung , pastey individuals I’ve ever met, who couldn’t do that way of eating, more reputational harm, if they tried , by their sheer examples of how not to eat 😂

Tom, how you make sweet potatoes: wash them, bake them at 200, no puncture holes, low temp for an hour or so, then turn the oven off when they are cooked. Leave them in said oven for 3 hours. They carmelize as you leave them in and end up tasting like candy. Trust me, I found this out by being the lazy cook that I am!

When I switched to predominantly plant-based foods, I found Niko Rittenau (German language) who skillfully put together a ton of great research in digestible format about having (evidence based) optimal nutrition as a vegan. The mentioned film "game changers", in contrast, turned out to have quite the bias / constructed examples - it's inspirational and I stand behind the message, but their stories are not based good science.

I honestly think that Tom came across a too involved in this conversation. Like having to say something smart by all means and while doing that really interrupting the flow of the guest. I think Rich is a very interesting human being. I love his thoughts and his life story. There’s no need to add anything or ask any questions about Duality. He’s quite articulate and expresses himself just fine. No need for unnecessary questions. It’s better just to let him speak. I don’t care so much about what Tom has to say when - in this case - not always! - his guest is just so much more interesting. No offense. There have been much better interviews by Tom and I usually really enjoy them. This one I had to turn off after the first few minutes cause it was so annoying. Now I have to look for another one with Rich Roll where he doesn’t ask the questions himself. He may be the only vegan on this planet I like….no I will never become a vegan again. Carnivore for life!

I am fully on par with Rich Roll`s explination of the spirit, I have been searching for years and can confess that there is definatelly a higher power and it works with and through us. We can only feel the presence with our emotions, our sences are not designed to calibrate to the high vibrations that the universe emit, we only see, hear, feel in a limited band of vibration and light. There are a infinate frequency range in the universe that we just dont grasp, that is God or the creator. This is what we need to tap into to become super human, it contains all power, all energy, all wisdom, all knowlege and all love. We can however train to tune into this with contiousness and being still in meditation, we can learn the language. We are all connected to the source and to each other. WORD.....ALL the anwers are in this spirit we live in and move in and have our being in. It is everywhere and in everything. Find your true self and you find God.

Tom, you ask how to help an addicted love one..Al-non is exactly how I helped the people in my life. I realized how smugly superior I was, thinking everybody should live how I think they should, because common sense right? I began seeing MY addictions. Humility is what we all think we have. When we sit across one that does, it is very apparent where we need to grow. We want others to seek recovery yet we don't need it. Lol. I know a ton of sober humans that think love is worry and control and are the most miserable bitter humans inside and super nice on the outside. It squeaks out. Doesn't take an expert to see this in ourselves and also others.

"Giving up" and "surrendering" in the spiritual sense works best when there are problems too complex or too taxing for us to realistically tackle with our limited amount of focus and energy. Because our minds are built on pattern recognition and hindsight storytelling, it's possible for us to surrender at any given time in any situation and look back and say, "It worked out." Even if it didn't actually work out. We just make ourselves believe it worked.

Great episode. It’s interesting to see the difference in personal development between Rich and Tom though, as well as the comfort in their own skin and life.

Coconut oil is actually very nutrition dense. A good virgin coconut oil. I like Trader Joe’s.

The part about failure and realizing it’s a sample to learn from is GOLD! Definitely going to look at failure as a sample from now on!

No way!!! Tom is exploring a plant-based existence? You have no idea what type of clarity and vitality you are going to experience. And my diet was always clean.

tries so hard to explain day long relapses why having a power greater than yourself is important and other tenants of the program and he just can't quite get it across and if not just to Tom I've seen him on other podcasts. I am not an addict myself but my father was my ex-partner was passed away from it and other people that have been very close to me. I've been in recovery as family and friends I've gone to many open meetings and gatherings. I think I understand as closely as anyone outside of the periphery of can understand. I wish that more people understood the Dynamics of addiction recovery and everything in between. Rich is an amazing individual although not everyone in recovery is a marathon runner and a podcaster you will find us some of the most profound people you will know a recovered addict. I was Society understood them more readily. I don't know what gets lost in translation. This was an excellent show overall the two of you made a great conversation
