Really puts into perspective the difference between being a #1 superpower, and being the runner-up. Now Russia historically has made some really stupid moves in the battles they've fought, but they've tended to have some halfway decent tech. Russia couldn't hope to come close to this level of dominance unless the territory being conquered were much, much smaller...like say, Georgia...

I like Vaush covering stuff like this. One thing I don’t quite understand is the lumping in of the Gulf war with the 2003 invasion of Iraq by some on the left, equating both morally. Though there is undoubtably connections, the Gulf war was a justified, and UN sanctioned (unlike 2003) global response to Saddam’s illegal invasion of his neighbor Kuwait. There are parts worth criticizing (the Highway of death is usually what people point to), and the US was certainly motivated by selfish reasons to respond. But with all that said, Saddam’s effort to annex Kuwait failed as a result of the Global response. It’s one of the few instances of the UN system actually being able to enforce and stop something like what Saddam tried to do. I don’t think I’ve ever really seen an alternative response offered by those critical of the entire Gulf War that would have resulted in that failure for Saddam.
@nuclearneo577

Also if we didn't kick Saddam out of Kuwait, he would have invaded Saudi Arabia next and ended up controlling about a fourth of the world's oil supply. That would have made him far more dangerous then I think anybody can really comprehend these days.

So one thing to help conceptualize why they are lumped together 1990-1991 Gulf War the internet was in its infancy, by 2003 internet was hitting its stride 2007 the first iPhone came out. The presidents at the time had the same name except for middle initial because the Bush’ are American dynasty of The Good Ole Boy Troupe. Many who comment on the conflict are too young to have been alive during Desert Storm. So they are going to assume it was equivalent.

The Iraqis were not as militarily weak as a lot of people seem to think. They had the 4th largest military in the world in 1991, were well equipped with decent, well maintained, if somewhat outdated Soviet equipment, and remember that they had just finished fighting the 8 year Iran-Iraq war, one of the most brutal wars of the 20th century that is always overlooked or forgotten. This means many of them were battle hardened veterans. The Coalition did not come down with overwhelming force just to flex their might, they did it because they didn’t want to take any chances with the Iraqi military, which was capable of putting up a good fight if underestimated.

The current service rifles of the Russian army *should* be the AK74M and the more recently adopted AK12, yet over 40% of captured Russian rifles can be dated to a 1970s or 1980s manufacturing date and have been shown to jam frequently. That is when I first learned we dropped way more bombs on Vietnam than all the Allies during WW2. They call them "sorties" whether its delivering supplies or dropping bombs, its a sortie and they think in Corporate ways of efficiency. Air Domination IS the reason America is an Empire, hands down, domination in space is second cause of things like GPS (An Air Force program) and even private companies in the game like Space-X and their low orbit internet satellites.

Cognitive dissonance Regarding tanks, the US Army did a study of an especially impressive battle called 73 Easting that concluded that if the US Army and Iraqi Republican Guard traded M1s for T-72s in the battle the end result would have been very similar but with 25% more casualties. While the tech gets the press, the real secret of America's success was superb training more than the quality of the tank.

@@Ass_of_Amalek First, real word engagement ranges are seldom equal to the theoretical maximum range of the tank - notably this also hampered German heavy tanks designed for long range fighting on the eastern steppe when it came time to fight in the more restricted terrain of Europe. It's one of the reasons Shermans so frequently roflstomped Panthers despite the German tanks' apparent superiority on paper. But I digress. The study may still be available online. Reading between the line I took it as the Army making the case that if they face budget cuts they'd rather get their budget for upgraded tanks cut instead of their budget for training. They ran 2 versions of the battle in a detailed simulation (and since this was done by the Army they know exactly what their armor packages gun performance, etc are). One version they had each vehicle in the battle do exactly what was done in real life but swapped tanks. The other version they kept the US forces in M1s but made them make typical rookie mistakes like not coordinating their attack so all the tanks engaged at once to overwhelm the Iraqi line and in that scenario they did much worse but I don't remember the details. I assume that the US tankers were generally not taking frontal shots against enemy tanks anyway, so not having the best armor and gun wasn't as much of a handicap as we might have expected. I bring this up because it runs counter to the narrative of the military-industrial complex.

The US could give Ukraine Abrahams and they can be airlifted (I think) although that's very expensive. The main issue with Abrahams for Ukraine is that they are so drastically different than Soviet tanks it would be a logistical nightmare. The training would basically need to be from scratch but the main issue is maintenance and repair. Sure major repair could be done in Poland or Europe but you still need specialist mechanics and engineers to keep them running in the field. They use a turbine engine which is completely different than the diesel engines used by pretty much every other country except some US allies. The Abrahams are also extremely fuel thirsty, they are fast and powerful but moving around 70 metric tonnes powered by a jet engine at speed isn't exactly energy efficient. It's the reason the US wants Germany to give Ukraine the Leopard tanks as they have a conventional diesel engines but are still far superior to Soviet and Russian tanks they are also lighter than the Abrahams so less likely to get bogged down and more fuel efficient.

The thing to bare in mind is that proportionally countries don’t have the same number of tanks and planes as in the 30s and 40s due to it being more effective to build more high tech tanks that take more time to produce but wouldn’t melt against modern armaments

There’s an “is/ought” gap in our Iraq involvement. While I agree with the sentiment that war over oil is lame af. The fact is that oil is a major international commodity, and Saddam is a murderous despot. If we ceded the oil our country relies on to an autocrat we jeopardize our entire society. All the more reason to work towards being less oil dependent. But ultimately the selfish cause of fighting over oil was the pragmatic move on the part of the US. Was it morally justified? Maybe in some instances, but largely not. It’s one of those issues I’m torn over. I hate that we like to play world police, but at the same time, do we just let Saddam do whatever he wanted? Breaking the statutes of the Geneva convention multiple times in a conflict that if we did nothing could leave him in sole control of a significant amount of oil wealth thus crippling nations across the globe? Just more arguments for border abolition I guess. I’m rambling, someone shut me up

I just can't get over the dissonance that is America when it comes to the quality of life and... idk, the character of its citizens or whatever, that you would expect from a country with seemingly endless resources and power Like, if you were to do a world building exercise for a fictional universe, and you were to make a civilization that is, at that time, militarily and economically the most powerful in the history of its world, how would you expect the civilian society to be? You'd expect them to at least have access to health care as needed and reliable public transport and a generally well off in education, housing blah blah... but instead we have... America lmao

You have access to all those things. Get a job and pay for them like everyone else. Many people don’t want the government running our medical system. The VA is proof of that. Also the USPS, DMV etc.. you’re also able to move to any other country you’d like.. maybe do that?
