I found the scene disappointing. It was cool seeing Tron again, but the scene felt extremely rushed. He never showed signs of resistance earlier, and he only choose to change when it was convenient for the plot.

There was a Disney plan to take risks and start several new franchises. Tron franchise. John Carter franchise. They took a big risk with The Lone Ranger. They had this risky plan to start new franchises but they gave up and went all in for Marvel instead. They still are trying to do it with movies like A wrinkle in Time and others but the market is saturated with Superhero movies right now.
