So good to feel the distance, to get e sense where everybody is. like you are there with them. They could have thrown in a dialoge like: „they are 40m away“ but instead Jackson choose to shot it. Small detail but makes the experience much better.

This is where we see Aragorn's super-human strength, dexterity and vitality as a numenorian descendent. Taking on so many Uruk-Hai by yourself isn't easy, which also goes to show just how badass Boromir was.

This is such an epic scene, the highlight of the fellowship of the ring. Aragorn staring at certain death in the form of 200-300 enemies and still faces them with no fear, not only that, he crushes them at will at first killing 5 at the time. Legolas bow and arrow skills are unmatched, Boromir’s redemption. No fake trees with green screen behind to simulate a forest, but an actual one right next to a beautiful river. Lets not forget that masterful soundtrack playing in the background, what a masterpiece

Like boromir Aragorn would of been overwhelmed cept for the fact Legolas and gimli were able to come save him at just the right time. With gimli tanking the orcs Legolas is able to absolutely massacre them while Aragorn rushes to try and save merry, pippin and Boromir. Great scene.

Also I don't have time to address all your "criticisms" cuz I actually have things to do but here's one "Boromir taking three arrows the size of broomsticks to the chest and continues to kill orcs." oh I'm sorry I'm guessing Tolkien himself is an idiot for writing it to where Boromir not only takes multiple arrows to the chest but keeps fighting in the beginning of The Two Towers, or an idiot for having Pippin say to Denethor "the mightiest man may be slain by a single arrow and Boromir was pierced by many" in The Return of the King. For such a puritan your argument there lacks scope and understanding.

Can we talk about how fucking awesome that shot is from 2:00-2:18? Excellent camera movement, perfect direction. One of my favorite shots of the whole series. A real testament to the original trilogy, and especially this movie. They grabbed dozens of extras, put them in makeup and costume, rigged a wire/crane system for the camera, ALL ON LOCATION, and went to town. Nowadays almost all of it would be greenscreened.

1:48 is a great detail. We see Legolas deliver many fatal blows to the Uruk-hai running around in no time at all killing about 5 of them but he takes a small pause before shooting the orc Aragorn is fighting with because he doesn't want to pierce through and hit his friend so he aims for a thicker place on the body/in the armour to keep his arrow in there and then fires. It defines how much training Legolas has had compared to so many as an archer and draws a line between being skilled and then being masterful.

1:39 - 2:19 is just masterful. We get a wide shot with Legolas perfectly placed to the left firing off arrows and Aragorn struggling with an Uruk in the middle. It's classically shot with no shaky cam and we get to see all the action. The light of the godrays also hit the set perfectly. Cue the horn blow and we get that amazing tracking shot covering the distance from them to the hobbits, and we see all of the uruks in their way. All of this conveys the mad struggle to get to Boromir and the chaos of battle. All of this is real and authentic, all shot on location with extras, no greenscreen CGI nonsense.

@@jarlwhiterun7478Shaky cam has its place, but it is a very small place used to convey chaos as part of a wider scene. Look at Master and Commander's Boarding Scene, there were moments of shaky cam but they were brief snatches sandwiched between largely steady shots; and they contributed to the feeling of the sudden frenzy of the boarding of the Acheron. The problem is too many directors think it's the be all and end all of action shots

Aragorn. 86 years of age. 66 Years of hand to hand combat experience when an average human could potentially have fighting experience from 18-40 in hand to hand. Aragorn definitely could take on more than 5 Urk-Hai at a time and he was smart to pull back and fight them on the staircase to keep fighting 2 Uruk-Hai's at a time. I know, its all fantasy and fiction... but Aragorn displayed his fighting experience over the years and in human years, he was probaly in his 30s and he was still at his peak during the lord of the rings. This is still one of THE BEST fight scenes in cinema. It feels so real, because of the practical effects used in these beautiful movies. The Lord of the Rings is a masterpiece of lore in itself, and I think they did the best that they could have ever done. Each character is spot on, especially Aragorn, who's fight with Lurtz is maybe top spot for fight scenes. It was super real because Viggo ACTUALLY parried that huge knife that was mistakenly thrown directly at him, and it was one of the most badass things that's ever happened as far as scripted unscripted incidents that work out for the better. Viggo will go down in history as Aragorn. He took his role as serious as could be, as far as getting law enforcement called on him for walking around in public practice swinging his sword, in costume. Bittersweet. The breaking of the fellowship is heart breaking, watching boromir die and lament the fall of Gondor to aragon, seeing frodo and Sam head off by themselves, merry and pippin taken captive, and none of them have Gandalfs wisdom or hope when they needed it most... But it had to happen this way.

We get a glimpse of what they were like in the First Age when, before the Ride of the Rohirrim at Minas Tirith, Theoden straight up breaks the war horn he blew into. He's also straight up compared to Orome, a Valar, in the same part of the book. Tolkien didn't mess around when making these two madlads borderline mythical powerwise.

It was likely the peak (and the last gasp) of the previous era. The movies were pitched around 1995, they funded and developed them in the late 1990s, and started shooting in 1999. The special effects were still old-school. The Hobbit movies (which were cynically made and look like crap) are actual 21st century movies. The 1990s were a drastically more optimistic time than the present.

I think it's useful to remember that, despite their amazing strength, the uruk-hais have ZERO training and experience of fighting. It might be different in the books, but from what we see in the films, they're born in the caves of Isengard and sent to battle right away. A confused group of unexperienced fighters can have a hard time against a seasoned warrior if he uses that confusion smartly. That's why Aragorn can take down Uruk hais so easily in spite of them being physically superior

People used to take time to make characters and props. Every single orc is a person dressed up in a costume. All of the new LOTR movies, the orcs are cgi. I always questioned Legolas' hair because most of the time its color isn't consistent, sometimes it has a gray/brown hue. But then I realized it just makes sense, cause he has a white/blonde hair and he's always outside exposed to smoke, dirt, etc.

This is my favorite fight form the series. No massive CG armies, no over the top stunts for the characters, no weird camera work. Just a grounded fight of the 9, whom all are great warriors, showing what they can do with sword, bow, axe, and dagger against even these powerful foes. My favorite example of this is Legolas, as the series goes on he goes over the top with super-human feats (peaking in The Hobbit), but here he is simply an amazing archer who can coolly stand his ground hitting target after target, and taking out foes close up as needed. I often think that this is probably closer to what Tolkien would of wanted to see for the race and character. He is super human in many ways, but over the top. This even goes for the camera work and stunt direction, it just a great battle of actors hitting each other in that forest with the LotR set pieces added. After this the series started to get more and more over the top with the fighting and while it still worked, it never felt as powerful as this.
