Escape also means to avoid. He's not 'breaking' the hold.

Im guessing it's geared to the average person who isn't strong enough physically to break the hold on their own because I know some people who are strong enough to break out on their own but this is a good defense for the average person

You can actually make your partner give up the attack by simply elevating the knee your hand is behind of, and rotating your same side hip and knee inwards. It doesn´t seem much, but that creats a painfull pressure that makes it easier to get your arm free.

+Theunit236 Someone once said that if it takes strength, it's wrestling, but if it's effortless, it's judo. That was Ronda Rousey who said that once. I'm also certain that if Helio Gracie was still alive, he'd say the same thing. And when gravity is the partner of the person at the top of the guard, holding that hook until the bottom guy gets mentally tired should pose no problems.

This isn't a escape. It's a defense. There are a lot of strong people who will break that grip. Also there is a variation of kimura which is changing the grips in order to make easier to break yours. But its a good defense.
