Sam Mendez The only way I slightly agree is that the filmmakers were at a slight disadvantage because they started making these movies before all the books were out. If they had the benefit of foresight, those things probably would have been set up prior.

Favorite detail left out of the movie: We actually learn that, at one point, Voldemort came back to Hogwarts as an adult and tried to apply to be the Defense Against the Dark Arts' professor. Dumbledore is distraught to see who Riddle has become and denies him, which prompts Voldemort to curse the position. And that is why no Professor Against the Dark Arts lasts more than a year

Kevin is right. Bellatrix is not at the Battle of Hogwarts in Half-Blood Prince. She does not appear again after the opening scene with Snape. Also, the book is not called "The Half Blood Prince" because of the mystery itself. It's because Snape is the Prince, and it's in this book that we find out Snape told Voldemort the prophecy and basically shaped Harry's fate, as mentioned in book Corner. Hence, the book is called "Harry Potter and Severus Snape."

I think this is the movie that cuts out the most important details from its plot. Goblet cuts things out but not things you NEED. This one, oof. Cutting out so much of Voldemort's backstory is a problem because it goes from 'we need to understand the dark lord and how he thinks" to "we just need to know the number of horcruxes he has". But the biggest one is cutting out the fact Snape is the one who told Voldemort the prophecy and Harry finding out about that. Removing that detail removes a ton of the reasoning why you really think Snape is evil. In the movies, he is just a lovable snark played by Rickman. In the books he is an absolutely detestable person in how he treats his students, and its here where Harry finds out just how loyal of a servant Snape was to Voldemort back before Lily's death. The film also removes the scene near the beginning of the book where Snape himself refutes all of Bellatrix's reasons for thinking he isnt loyal to the Dark Lord.

Its why this movie and the next 2 fall a bit flat with me because they take out all of Voldermort's backstory and spoilers for the next one but another important backstory). As you mentioned the Voldermort flash backs give context why certain things become Horcruxes, why there are 7, etc.

The thing with this movie is that it;s very well made and directed and that the plot is very enaging. I am a big HP fan of the movies as I saw them all on cinema from very young but I have never read the books and I think that this is the best HP movie (I know many more that do as well). If I had read the books I would probably have a similar opinion but i have to tell you that as a movie alone, it's one of the best in the series.

I enjoy this movie. Even though he is nothing close to what he is described as in the books, the guy who plays Professor Slughorn (Jim Broadbent) is great. I love the sense of humor he brings. The scene in the cave with Harry and Dumbledore is also great, but doesn't begin to match the emotion level in the book. The Inferi are terrifying.

I disagree about the name of the book/movie. Because yes, it's a C plot, but that was a bait and switch. Because Snape aka the Half Blood Prince changes the course of the action, directly affects several main characters' destinies and forces us to reevaluate everything we learned about him for the past six books. It's aptly, not obviously, titled.

I can't remember if in the movie we get one of my favorite moments in the books, when they get the Slughorn memory and Harry pieces everything together about Voldermort, about the Horcruxes, about the Prophecy him and Dumbledore have an amazing back and forth about the importance of Harry choices and what makes him different and more powerful than Voldermort. That Harry has never feared Death, than he choices to fight for his friends, and Harry comparing it to proudly going into battle on you own two feet rather than being dragged into battle kicking and screaming.

For me the biggest thing that was cut was Hermione's SPEW (Society for the Protection of Elfish Welfare) project. That subplot was an absolutely critical aspect of Ron and Hermione's relationship development, and had an amazing payoff when they finally get together in the last book. If they'd included it in this film (even a condensed version) it would've made their chemistry so much more believable.

I know boss baby had a lot to cover but I wanted to point out in the book in a memory, I think Dumbledore’s. Tom is applying for the defense against the dark arts job. Saying that Hogwarts was like his home during school and after leaving no other place felt right. So not only is he asking to teach but asking to come back home. Dumbledore however refuses to give Tom the job, and hurt by this Tom claims that who ever gets the position will suffer testable things. Thus cursing the position of defense against the dark arts. Literally. This memory also connects Harry With the dark lord because they both fill the same way about Hogwarts it’s their home. That’s also the last Voldemort step foot in the cancel. A year later he started publicly do dark wizard stuff. Just thought I add to the corner KANPAI!

The Book is awesome, the lack of detail brought to the movie is disheartening. Completely throws out lore, Voldy backstory and other characters building details. They have to jump through hoops the make this shit work everytime, but all they had to do was follow the books more.

This is my favorite book of the series and due to not all the books were out the whole series the whole thing can feel off, but I have to imagine JK Rowling insisted on more Dobby scenes throughout

Btw the reason they did not apparate into the cave was becausevoldermort cast an anti apparating spell on it, similar to hogwarts.

I might be wrong, but even in the books, Ginny was always kind of a non-character, right? I remember feeling that her relationship with Harry was really forced in the novels

It's shame the film wasn't better because this book is definitely the best one in the series. I'll never forget the feeling I had reading Harry and Dumbledore trying to drink the fluid in the cave and Snape killing him. I was so stunned.
