Hugh Jackman was a last minute replacement for Wolverine, that's why he's so skinny. Dugary Scott, who was the bad guy in Mission Impossible 2,(The John Woo directed one which also featured Thandie Newton of Solo and Westworld), and he played Prince Charming in Ever After with Drew Barrymore, had to go back and do reshoots for Mission Impossible 2. So at the last minute, they replaced him with Jackman who'd finished runner up in the casting. So mission impossible movies have directly affected 2 comic book movies, this situation, and Henry Cavil's mustache in Justice League. (Also if you didn't know, Cavil was the runner up to Brandon Routh in Superman Returns and Daniel Craig for James Bond. Lost to Routh because Routh favored Christopher Reeve a bit more and Craig because he was too young and they wanted rugged).

Y'all are forgetting about Blade. That was really the first attempt at a more serious comic book movie and for being rated R, was pretty successful.

I was just making sure someone said this. Everyone always gives X-Men credit for starting the modern comic book movie revolution, but there wouldn't be an X-Men movie if it hadn't been proven 2 years earlier that an amazing comic book movie could be made with an even lesser known character.

Sir Ian McKellen was very well known in the theatre world and as a Shakespearean actor before his time with X-Men. Just thought I’d throw that out there. If anyone’s interested you guys should see the acting class him, Patrick Steward, and other famous actors teach Shakespeare with John Barton.

I liked what Del Toro did with the 2nd Blade and I enjoyed that film more than the first one (despite de terrible CGI). Having said that... yeah, the third entry in the franchise was an atrocity. Regarding the X-Men being the cornerstone of the modern superhero genre instead of Blade, I think it has a lot to do with the X-Men being a more well-known IP and the movie being family friendly whereas Blade was PG-something.

Nick asked if Ian McKellen had done LOTR yet. While the first film wouldn't come out until 2001, he had already completed principle photography on all three movies in the late 90s.

Great podcast guys! While I've never been much of a huge fan of the X-Men films compared to the MCU series which I consider to stay more faithful to the source material, it's still fun listening to your opinions of how the films hold up now and can't wait to hear your discussion on X2: X-Men United. You might as well do an entire review for all the Spider-Man films (Sam Raimi trilogy, Marc Webb duology & Homecoming) leading up to Homecoming 2.

Nick is 100% right about Hugh Jackman being a last minute addition. Dougray Scott was originally cast as Wolverine but had to drop out at the last second due to scheduling conflicts with Mission Impossible II. It was a whole thing back in the day...and I remember because I'm old, like Nick.

Hugh Jackman was a last minute replacement for Dougray Scott who was forced out of playing Wolverine because shooting Mission Impossible 2 as the villain ran over schedule and he was forced out. Poor bastard. Also the actor playing Senator Kelly was NOT the actor from Harry and the Hendersons, thats John Lithgow, Sen Kelly is played by Bruce Davison. How awesome! I just randomly started watching these movies last weekend before I heard you guys had said anything about this. This worked out so well! Lol These films hold such a special place in my heart, X-Men 1 was the very first DVD I ever bought lol, so I may be very bias. But come one Tim and sometimes Nick, I love you guys but you guys were super harsh on this movie. It’s nearly 20 years old at this point so of course it’s going to be a sign of the time, and I don’t think you can really compare these to any of the MCU movies as they were nearly a decade apart, we had a quite a few superhero movies already at that point and they had plenty of time and examples to draw from to perfect that formula that X-Men really started. Thanks god Greg and Kev were there to spread the love!

Near the beginning, when Tim mentions the '89 Batman movie as an early comic book movie, I think it's a little different. The early '90s Batman movies are like movies that are based on comics, but made as movies. X-Men, in my opinion, tried to be a comic book movie that gave you the feeling of the comics. That's just my opinion though.
