Sooo...estimating Rey's dad's age (the actor is 30) at 20-30 when Rey was born in 15 ABY (making him ~25-35 when she was 'sold'), Sheevy Palps would've done the nasty 4-14 years after episode 3 (19 BBY) as a 60-70 year old disfigured frog-monster. Hawt. I guess it's possible her dad is Luke's age or older though.

I think the best description I've heard for this movie is what Harrison Ford told Mark Hamill when they were filming A New Hope. "It ain't that kinda film kid." that quote was in response to Mark pointing out that their hair should be wet for continuity reasons. And I think it fits really well now. Star Wars is a dumb popcorn flick that isn't about asking deep questions. These guys are OK with it. They basically want more Fast and the Furious but in space. Which fine sure whatever. But if that's what it is now, then I'm OK with not watching the movies.

Man I'm blown away by these impressions. This movie was awful. Every scene was pointless, felt rushed, and had no stakes or emotion at all. A problem is created and solved within minutes in almost every scene. The breakneck pace of this film really skewed the opinions here because if you stop and think about ANY scene or plot element, it simply doesn't make sense, and you can tell these guys didn't do that lol. And the currently existing characters had nothing important to do except chase macguffins around and yet they kept introducing new characters. However, I will admit the film was visually stunning. But yeah this film and the whole trilogy were just a huge lump of wasted potential. Spoiler: They nullified Vader's entire arc and sacrifice by bringing back Palpatine. What the hell!

This movie felt like a $300M fan film. Force powers were cranked up 1000%, the other 2 films barely mattered, and it felt like they just said “Let’s put that in because it looks cool”. It was a fun ride, but it felt like a weird (and completely bonkers) ending to this trilogy and the 9-film saga.

That was the theory I had before the film came out and was kind of hoping they'd reveal in the Sith chamber, that Palpatine only told Kylo that she was his granddaughter because he knew he'd tell her and it would make her feel isolated and afraid. Think about this... in episode 2 and 3 what was Anakin's mission/ultimate desire after his mother died? "I will be the most powerful jedi ever, I will even stop those I love from dying." Ben Solo, the grandson of Anakin, the last Skywalker sacrifices himself "...fulfill what you started" to save Rey. It was powerful and easy to not think about or realize.

I appreciate how candid you guys are during the review. I have a totally different opinion of the film, and I think it mostly just centers around what I kept hearing you say throughout the review, which was (in short) "this isn't a good movie -- but it made me feel good so it's fine". That just seems like expecting too little from what used to be such a cool franchise. And the whole what-about-isms you used during the review to justify the bad story telling felt very unfounded. Sure, there are plenty of movies that have small parts where you have to say "ok, this is just a movie *suspend disbelief*" but you can't build an entire film off of that and then keep throwing in stuff that feels out of place. All-in-all, this movie just felt like JJ trying to do 2 films in 1 and pleasing the fans as much as possible, and I thought it failed miserably.
@WHOAITSTHEINTERNET

I think JJ could have done a WAY better job of meshing the best parts of TLJ into the plot while providing *just enough* fan service to ease in those that didn't love TLJ, and it would have made for a stronger more cohesive trilogy. What we got was a disconnected mess of a plot that tries too hard to please fans and forgets to find its own identity.

My biggest problem with the movie is how they bring Palpatine back. Through the opening text? No hint at all to him the last two movies, then he’s back in the opening text. I agree it shouldn’t be some big reveal halfway through, but only because it was revealed in the trailer. But surely can come up with something better than that. On top of that, him being alive implies he survived the Death Star, undermining Anakin and Luke’s 6 movie journey.

Palpatine should never have been a thing in this trilogy, much less the last film. Of course, its clear the main problem here is there was no planning from the very beginning. But even then, i still believe tros could have been infinitely better, even without the plan, had JJ developed existing set ups instead retconning and introducing new ones. It wouldnt have been a perfect film, but at least it wouldn't be this convoluted and underdeveloped.

She "finally" has an answer to what her lineage is? Tlj made it clear they weren't anyone of importance. I would have been fine if she had an important bloodline (though i wouldn't prefer it) if this was effectively foresahdowed. But it wasnt because there was no solid plan for where she was going to end up. And aside from that, her arc of choosing her own family could have been done without the retcon. We could have fleshed out her "filthy junk trader" parents. They share the same values as the first order (in that they have no issue exploiting children) and are therefore part of the evil in the galaxy, even if they arent force sensitive or sith. Its completely plausible that her draw to the dark could be explained by the awful genes of her completely non-force-sensitive, but evil parents. This change would not only be more interesting, it would also be much more relatable! Retcons and the negligence of existing set ups killed this film.

I agree with Nick when he said that the ex-storm troopers storyline needed to be fleshed out more. I loved that scene between Jannah and Finn where they're talking about their past, I just wish the scene was given more room to breathe.

Not sure I agree at all with Nick's opinion of the critics reviews of the film. The whole way through they've been mentioning that there's bad editing and the story is all over the place. What are they expecting critics to do? Give it a pass? On RT its got a 54%, that feels absolutely right to me. It aint bad but its not particularly great either.

I hate to say that I didnt love TROS. It has some fun moments and the character interactions are good but I just found meself feeling apathetic about everything happening on screen. For me all the big payoffs of this movie were set up in this film which is fine for a movie but kind of makes me feel meh on the whole trilogy. I think the real issue at the end of the day is Disney didnt have a clear plan as y'all stared in the review. I hope it grows on me once I rewatch it.

I've got a great idea let's create a storm trooper bike that doesn't hover like everything else in the universe. Let's put a tank tread in the front and have it able to keep up with a floating speeder even though sand consistency is so bad it would seriously slow them down and yet somehow they're fast enough to catch up to a floating speeder but not fast enough to overtake them that you need to launch jet pack troopers from a back seat to try to finish them off. Literally the dumbest thing ever. I get it's cool looking but it doesn't belong in the SW universe.

Honestly, if I never got fully invested in Star Wars, never read the comics, watched Clones Wars, or Rebels, I’d probably have enjoyed it. But I just couldn’t enjoy it. JJ clearly didn’t invest any time learning what has happened in the canon, or how anything works, what people know or don’t know, causing this whole film to feel like fan fiction for Original Trilogy Purists. As someone who loved TFA and TLJ, TROS kinda dissapointed me. I still enjoyed it for what it was and I adore the characters as a whole but before TROS I did actually hold this Trilogy as my favorite of the 3 even though is wasnt finished yet. I do think JJ just said fuck it and tried his best to appease everyone which is something that can never be done successfully. Like the guys said, the responsibility falls on Kathleen and Disney to have an actual roadmap for what needs to be done and I am optimistic for the future and I really do think whatever comes next will be done the right way and bring star wars fans back together. And I really hope sometime in like ten years or so we get to see this cast of characters back in star wars for a story that will be told for the next generation and will be as great as this one should of and could have been.

Luke cathing the lightsaber isnt a fuck you to Rian Johnson, In Last Jedi Luke has an story arc from a broken jedi that would throw away the lightsaber to regaining his faith in the jedi and becoming the guy we se in Rise of skywalker that catches the lightsaber. The Luke Rian leaves us with in the last jedi would have cought that saber.
@carlosgsoria
@carlosgsoria 3 жыл бұрын
If only they already had that moment where he holds that lightsaber in TLJ. Oh wait, he did. That’s literally why he uses the blue saber in the end instead of the green one. He’s symbolically picking it back up from when he threw it at the beginning, to be the metaphor of him picking back up his legend. The TROS one was literally just an insult to rian and answer to fans of “he wouldn’t do that reee”.
@tullerusk987
@tullerusk987 3 жыл бұрын
@@carlosgsoria i disagree, its not an insult having it twice. But also in TLJ i feel its less about him symbolicly picking his legend up again. But more him not wanting to use the lightsaber he almost struck Ben solo down with. Also its just a hint for the viewer that its not luke in the flesh haha
@carlosgsoria
@carlosgsoria 3 жыл бұрын
@@tullerusk987 while those 2 other reasons do exist, they all coexist with the themes of what he’s doing. That’s why those final scenes with Luke and Ben are so emotionally heavy. The legendary Luke Skywalker has returned to fight his nephew who has now outgrown his grandfather and killed his master to rule the universe, putting him on the same level as the emperor, but showing his turmoil growing and being even more unstable as he lets the darkness take him instead of becoming stronger. That white salt the first order is on, symbolizing forced unity just like in our history, is now lead by unstable ruler, vs that passionate burning red with the rebels, now being led by a legend that will inspire to fight for life and freedom and to protect those that choose to fight for those ideals. Just like with George, rian is using symbolism from our world to elevate the messages in a scene. Watch other RJ movies, or even the breaking bad episodes he did. He purposely uses symbols within the world to help set what we’re supposed to feel and what message he’s trying to say. There’s nothing like that in TROS.
@tullerusk987
@tullerusk987 3 жыл бұрын
@@carlosgsoria Yeah i agree that he uses symbolism ofcourse. But i dont think JJ was holding a grudge and put that scene in Rise as a screw you yo Rian. I feel its more like a way to atleast try and tie it in with TLJ. But either way TLJ and Rise did not work for me. Love the symbolism in TLJ but the story lacked alot for me. Rise is just a clusterfuck that was basicly bound to happen with no planning of a trilogy.

I can't tell you how refreshing it is to finally have some decently positive commentary about this movie. My recommended videos and articles have been flooded with links to people talking about how terrible they thought this movie was, whereas I walked out of it having loved so much of it. I hung around the theatre for a while after the movie ended and while its flaws definitely stood out more so than any other Star Wars movie, everyone in the crowd just had such a great time. It doesn't commit to explaining literally every step or every detail that led to the events taking place in the movie, but the entire saga has tonnes of these open ended questions and that's okay. That's where the fun speculation begins (just... try not to get butthurt when your fan theory doesn't end up being canon). I feel like this is probably the easiest movie to pick apart if you wanted to. God knows the world and every sequel trilogy/Kathleen Kennedy hater alive is going to rip and tear into it hard. But that hate has been around since the announcement of Star Wars being sold to Disney, and is never going to go away.

It's almost the one year anniversary of TROS, and I've never tried to love a movie more than this one. But, just as the finale to the Skywalker saga all I feel is disappointment (especially knowing about Colin Trevorrow's 'Duel of the Fates' script). Is it fun to watch? Sure, but fun doesn't outweigh the baggage of problems this film created itself. It should've been ROTS levels of hype but it simply wasn't. P.S. Honestly, it makes me question if J.J. Abrams is to blame for the sequel trilogy problems; it all stems from TFA.
