Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth Persona 3 Reload Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth Unicorn Overlord…. This is an amazing year for JRPGs and its only March! With plenty more on the way! Aside from P3R (due to it being a remake, albeit an amazing one) I could see a GOTY argument for each of these.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes looks like it’s going to be the true successor to the classic Suikoden II on PS1, one of the greatest of all-time, even 25 years later. RIP to Suikoden creator, Yoshitaka Murayama. 😢

Rebirth was wayyyyy underrated by the Kinda Funny Crew. It's bonkers how much it improved and expanded upon part 1 and that was their GOTY. I don't know many games capable of being 100+ long and yet feel like it's a 20 hour game. The variety, the characters, the combat one of the best systems in a game, the music..... Incredible game.

Rebirth is my favorite game so far this year. Granted I’m only 22 hours in and on chapter 4 😂, but it’s scratching an itch I didn’t know I had. I liked Prince of Persia a lot, but it’s not on the level of my favorite Metroidvania games. The story in it sucks, honestly, and the chronology of it makes no sense. It just made me want to go back to Ori again. Will be interested to see how it stacks up by end of year.

I really don’t understand how people can call the mini games in Rebirth padding. It seems like people don’t remember how many mini games were in the original. I actually find it refreshing that they “gamify” all the side content. People are always complaining that side quests are boring. Rebirth makes them challenging and unique. Queen’s Blood alone could seriously be its own IRL game. Rebirth is firmly my GoTY

mini games are good as side content. make too many of them mandatory and it gets really annoying. it's like the prozd skit where the shooting in the game is good but then someone shows up to make you do a boring egg hunt. now I can't speak for Rebirth specifically because I haven't played it yet. but that's where I stand generally.

@@SetsunaF916 would you call all the side stuff you can do in Yakuza game padding? No, it’s part of what makes the game what it is. Would you rather an empty world where the side quests are all fetch quests. Every town is literally one building. Your party walks in, you talk to all of them, then leave for the next town? It’s not padding. It’s world building and player engaging. Padding is just what people call it because they don’t like it. Not the same thing. There a high correlation between people who are calling this padding, and those who complain that they are doing something different instead of sticking to the original game 1:1. FF fans are FF’s biggest critics.

I think FF7 Rebirth is probably the front-runner at the moment and it's releasing in a good year, because I don't think it would have stood a chance against Elden Ring, GoW Ragnarok, TotK or BG3 over the last couple of years even though it probably would have made the final list of nominees in both. It also doesn't have a behemoth like GTA6 or even something like Monster Hunter Wilds or Death Stranding 2 to compete against either as they're releasing next year, so could be a good year to pick up the W.

I don’t actually have a game of the year contender so far. I’ve not really played any of the new releases apart from Unicorn Overlord and Rebirth. I’m enjoying both. I do have issues with Rebirth. The open world got boring really quick for me. Side quests too, on top of all the incessant mini games. Although I am enjoying the gameplay. Visuals are great and performances are great. Just wish it was more streamlined.

Helldivers 2 is probably my GotY right now even though I went a week without being able to play it (log in or matchmaking). I still think Hellblade 2 will probably be my favorite though something like Dragon's Dogma 2 or Dragon Age Dreadwolf could sneak in. Side note, the random producer appearances in the corner of the show is distracting and takes away from the quality of the production of the content. Especially if there's no commentary or reason for it.

Andy is wild 😂. All that talk about prince of persia. I'll be curious to see what everyones thoughts on slave zero x is like. Im looking forward to gotys, especially with everyone having different #1s. Me, tekken 8 no question. Im a fighting game player 1st and foremost. With all the jrpgs coming and then theres dragons dogma 2 and rise of the ronin around the corner. After that, probably helldivers 2 being the runner-up, but i dont see that lasting long for me. Its a great in-between kinda game when you need a break from the long runnning games FF7 rebirth, ive been ignoring all talks about it. Its going to be a long time before i even touch it. Having played the original, i want to play this in its entirety. Like A Dragon Infinite Wealth or FF7: Rebirth are easily the GOTY so far. I think Dragon Dogma potentially could be the GOTH when all is said and done. Helldiver 2 is good but not that good to be GOTY in my opinion. Its repetitive as hell.
