As a huge fan of Nintendo's lesser known offerings in addition to their popular franchises, I felt better served this year than many other years, so I would solidly rate this an 8. Seeing the return of Another Code, Endless Ocean, Mario vs Donkey Kong, Princess Peach in a solo adventure, Nintendo World Championships (albeit that concept that overhauled, but I really like the new direction), and - most importantly to me- Emio. Following up one of my favorite threads where Nintendo tapped Mages to recreate the original two Famicom Detective Club games, and its wonderful to see that was successful enough to greenlight a brand new game in that series, and to have enough faith in Yoshio Sakamoto to write a true horror narrative for it. Emio is one of my favorite titles of the year, not just for what it represents but also just how good of a package that game is. In addition to this we got a remake of one of the best RPGs of all time: Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. This game has some of the best writing in any video game, especially in the comedy department. The already great music was also significantly expanded, and the gameplay core remains strong even compared to modern contemporaries. Mario RPG fans even got the resurrection of Mario & Luigi - which was very much up in the air after the death of AlphaDream - with a really good entry in Brothership! While it doesn't land as my favorite of that series, its still a good reintroduction to the series for old and new fans and lives up to the standard of that series. The second highlight of this year was Zelda, which saw the much requested return to the Link's Awakening art style, Zelda as a playable character in a unique adventure suited for her, and Grezzo finally given the reins of a single player Zelda. This game was incredibly satisfying to play, as well as super cute in both presentation and writing. Adding onto this great fall for Nintendo was the best new Mario Party - Jamboree - and that game is so varied and well made at its core that it goes toe-to-toe with some of the best entries in the series. The core gameplay tweaks here are exceptionally fun and varied, with strong new board designs, as well as smart use of returning content; very much making it a best of both worlds of Super Mario Party and Mario Party Superstars. But one of the best experiences I had this year was the Splatoon 3 Grand Splatfest. As a huge Splatoon fan, this was not just an extremely involved and fun send off to Splatoon 3, but also a massive love letter to the entire trilogy that ultimately was Nintendo succeeding in pulling off a Fortnite-style mega in-game event. It was extremely to fun to play for a weekend with friends and on off-times just chill in a well-animated concert environment that felt like I was watching one of those Splatoon hologram idol shows they have at Nintendo Live. And then I got a dream announcement in Nintendo Music. Having the ability to easily spin up a bunch of Nintendo music without any of the weird hiccups of KZbin is a dream come true, and if they continue to show their commitment to this app like they have so far, this will be something truly special. This was also the same year where we finally got a glimpse of Metroid Prime 4 gameplay, and with a newly appended subtitle - Beyond. The last promise of the Switch will finally be fulfilled next year, and so far, it looks great. This is obviously a stepping-stone year to prepare Nintendo's first party studios for the Switch successor. So if *this* is a prep year and it is still this good, I can only imagine what the next year will bring for me!

If Elden Ring can run on a Xbox One it won’t have issues on Switch 2

Regarding Princess Peach Showtime and making games for a "younger" audience I think people don't really remember the types of games WE were playing as kids. We grew up on Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, Super Mario 64, Super Mario World. Kids these days play COD and Fortnite. They can handle and absolutely want more complex experiences than what Showtime and Plucky Squire give them.

this is a great point. from games have also massively popularized difficult game design and helped to spread literacy for general game design as well which also makes more gamers craves harder experiences.

I give it an A- all things considered. Had solid triple a titles and that new Mario party is the best one they had in years!

This one really should've had a guest which has actually played the majority of Nintendo releases this year. Someone like Rogersbase or Damiani from EasyAllies. Still a good listening!

I'll raise you in that pizza bet Tim, I think we'll see Death Stranding and RE4 Remake in the announcement trailer for Switch 2. My logic: both of those games run on the new iPhones and I've got a feeling the new Switch will be close in graphical power if not slightly more powerful than current gen iPhones. Something to remember: Nvidia played a large part in the impressively powered (for a handheld at the time) Switch at launch. I can't help but feel like Nvidia will also be involved in crafting a custom GPU for the Switch 2 and with that will come with better-than-anticipated visual fidelity and possibly some DLSS-light tech.

I just finished Echoes of Wisdom on the weekend. Really enjoyed! There were a couple of annoying puzzles, but apart from that, had a great time.

55:00 Damn Straight. At this rate, I'll pay separately for the Gen 1-3 Pokemon games (to be clear, I'd much rather not). I don't understand the holdout when we already have OG Mystery Dungeon.

The reason is super simple, it just takes a little bit of following TPC's historical logic; NSO is inherently coupled with Cloud Save functionality, which would facilitate trade duplication. You cannot decouple single entries from an NSO app from utilizing Cloud Saves. Given that TPC will need to implement online trade functionality into these games (and have to develop the emulator features for this on GBA where at least for the GB emulator they have a base for that from the Virtual Console), yet also not utilize cloud saves, these games will likely only exist as their own applications; or, if we're lucky, a collection

Terrible with names anyone let alone with a migraine so I mean 0 disrespect... Dude on the left of the video stage right essentially. "I'm amazed Nintendo haven't ran out of Steam" yup, same, meanwhile MS and Sony have yet to even begin to light the fire to boil the water to start producing steam. Never EVER would've expected end game Switch titles would be outclassing the simply not bothering to show up from Sony and MS. Sony have new hardware to promote the release of... Absolutely nothing. MS are too busy porting stuff from 5 years ago to other systems. Hellblade from MS and Helldivers from Sony kicked the year off so well, since then Indie and Astro bot, it's been bleak with how little has came out. Which this would be fine if last year was them releasing banger after banger after banger, but no, both are just severely lacking for games. Like Switch 2's launch lineup has a real chance of being better than anything MS and Sony do in the entirety of 2025 and Nintendo don't just make a launch lineup and then fail to support a system, not these days, year 1 could be phenomenal for Switch 2. Hell they could remaster BOTW and TOTK to run at 60fps with HDR and at the very least they'll tie with Sony as they only do Remasters these days anyway.

Agree with some of this but I'd say Hellblade fell a bit short. Yeah sure it's at an 81 on Metacritic, but it was a very polarising game. Also we had FF7 rebirth, Helldivers 2, Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin in the first 4 months for PS, then Astrobot, Lego Horizon and Silent Hill 2 remake. Xbox have also had Stalker 2 and Indiana Jones to cap off the year and we've also had a solid 3rd party offering.

Sounds like you have a preference for Nintendo. I had a great time on my PS5 this year and I haven’t touched my Switch
