In today's video, I'm sharing my thoughts on whether Kindle's are better than books, or if physical books are still better thank Kindle's and e-readers. Hopefully, this will help you decide if the Kindle is worth buying in 2020.
I'm going to discuss this is by contrasting books and Kindles through the feel of each, the readability of each, the pricing of each and then I'll share my preferred option and recommendation between the two at the end of the video. If you find it helpful then feel free to leave a like on the video.

I absolutely love my kindle. The biggest advantages for me is being able to read more easily in the dark, ability to look up words in the dictionary and the ease of checking out and returning library books.

Backlight and dictionary are awesome! :) I didn't know you could put library books on the Kindle? How can I do that??

Nick Kendall it’s amazing! You download either Libby or overdrive onto your phone or computer. Sign up with your local library or create account with existing card, check out a title or place a hold. On Libby there’s a “read with” option and you can select “kindle”. It’ll take you to your amazon account where you click which kindle you want to send the book to. Automatically returns at the end of the loan period. My explanation is kind of convoluted but I promise it’s super easy. I think most libraries have pages or pamphlets about how to check out digital books.

Another advantage of the Kindle is that you can read it in places where the light is too poor to read a regular book. There is also a feature on many (but not all) Kindle books where I can press down on the screen if there is a word I don't know and it will pull up the dictionary. It works with names as well, so if I am reading about Ragnar Lothbruk and push down on the name, a brief history of the man pops up. I have been packing for a move and have about 6 boxes full of books (each quite heavy) and probably have 10x that number of books in my Amazon account, all of which can be read from my phone, my Kindle or my computer and weigh nothing. Many of these are free and since I have Amazon Prime I can borrow a book per month from a very wide selection. So when I am waiting somewhere I can read a book on my phone. The exception where I prefer actual paper books are the reference books with photos.

The weight and size of my physical book collection was one of the reasons I was keen to move to kindle too. I’ve moved a handful of times in the past few years and my book collection has been one of the most inconvenient parts of moving!

The biggest problem with a Kindle (and most any eReader) is that you don't actually own any of the books you buy.
@tayt_
@tayt_ Жыл бұрын
Sure you do. Use Calibre to remove DRM and that file is all yours. Keep proof of purchase and use an online resource library to download a copy. Not legal advice, but I don’t think publishers would take that to court.

80 and switched in 2007 my personal choice will always be the e-reader: Undecided, buy 7" Kindle Fire HD under $50, don't pay for Amazon's Unlimited, take any of the 100,000 they offer free, also BookBud and #1 your public library with both free e-books and audiobooks, text to speech is very good on any Kindle device. I average about 6 books a month, just added the Kindle Oasis which I won't recommend for a new user based on price and Bluetooth only. My Kindle library on the Oasis 599 pages x 8 books per page= 4,792 to choose from today, more tomorrow.

Physical books work out better for me in the area of reference materials...atlases, certain instructional-type things, etcetera, where you find value in being able to rapidly go back and forth between areas (almost like flipping through a catalog), and of course where color is necessary (though that is where a Kindle app can step in), or you need to look at the big picture on something, like an atlas, where scrolling just won't work. In that last regard, that is why people will sometimes ask "what are you doing with that paper map or atlas...why not just do it online/with a phone?" Sure, but sometimes you like to look at the big picture of something before digging into the details electronically. I still like the experience of walking in a bookstore though, even if I am not usually buying anything there🙂

Great topic Nick. My biggest concern was note taking on electronic devices vs physical books, so I'm glad you covered that. How "searchable" are the notes you take on Kindle? Can you search notes on Kindle/Goodreads? I think I would prefer Kindle for Fiction and then Physical for Non-Fiction. Liking the titles and sound effects!

Love my kindle. I still read physical more. The used bookstore price per book makes it hard not to just read the physical when you find one. I give them to someone else when I finish. If I am excited about a new read that I can not get on Kindle, at the time, then I will grab it on Kindle.

Just got the new kindle. The one thing an ereader hasn’t been able to match a paper book is the contrast. The font blackness level on any ereader can not match paper books. Just compare the font color on your ereader screen with the font color in any paper book.

E-ink screen as used by Kindle is not "a bit" like paper, it is _exaclty_ like paper. The substrate is almost white and _opaque_ with black pigment on it, just like paper. The screen is either read in ambient light, or with built-in _front_ light (not backlight). Kindles _do_ have page flip and chapter skip feature, not to mention search within one or all books.

Great video (I especially liked how you nicely split it up in most important categories), albeit i have a bit of nitpick there Kindle is just only one device, while there is quite a lot of different e-ink ebook readers, and personally, I dislike how there is connotation of E-Ink Ebook reader ~ Kindle, in similar way like, Google ~ Search something As far as I know, there are even phones with E-Ink screen And, to explain: You said, responsiveness is low, but, it is due to the fact how E-Ink technology works, albeit, some companies try to figure out better responsiveness (Kinda tricks), especially on android e-ink devices About ease of access - Maybe different software for reading (E.g KOreader ) might deal with that better? Text - not to mention, you can sideload fonts Also I apologize if I came off as rude or impolite in some way, just, wanted to point out a bit, sorry.

I have the brand new paperwhite but my only concern is the comprehension and memory with reading on an E-Reader. I have bought two books on kindle. (Not available on KindleUnlimited) but I seem to have a hard time remembering and comprehending, not sure if it's just the books I'm reading or my disability or what. I also feel it has to deal with my addiction to technology with comprehension and memory. Read up on some Allen Carr. All these devices and social media is destroying our comprehension and memory and anxiety and attention span. So I feel it's due to that why I can't comprehend much and remember much either.

I almost worship books, the democratization of knowledge they brought. To me, they are practically synonymous with civilization. I even love the smell of dust and some chemical American libraries use on their stock (presumable to suppress mold or something) - second-hand ex-library books I used to buy via one of many used book online exchanges always had that smell. But mass market paperbacks always try to close. If you "crack them open" (which I hate), they often fall apart. Thick, heavy hardcovers hit me on the nose more than one while reading them in bed. If you want to annotate them, there is no other way than defacing their margins. And I cannot easily look up unfamiliar geographic or historical reference or a word from a strange jargon or vernacular. A few years ago I read a favorable review of a particular book, and I remembered I bought it - it should be somewhere on my double-stacked bookshelves. I located it 8it was a not too large hardcover), dusted it off and started reading. After twenty or so pages I could not take the unwieldy object any more: I reached for my Kindle (first gen Voyage just became my "daily driver"), located the book in the store, bought it and continued reading. Aaaah, that's better! I still keep all DTBs I amassed, and occasionally peruse those of coffee-table style that do not lend themselves readily to Kindle, But when I want to re-read a novel of a text-based non-fiction, I acquire it in e-book format. And, although my bookcases have more than thirty meters of tightly packed shelf space, my 200 grams of pocket fitting Kindle contains more.
