It's so nice to see a booktuber not bashing on reading via kindle. I got my basic kindle in August and since then I've read probably 100 books because I just cannot stop reading. I'm a college student and it's just amazing to have a separate, small, non-distracting device for reading alone. I know I'm totally late on this video, but I just found it and decided to drop it!

I've had my Kindle Paperwhite for close to 4 years now and it still works like new. I got it specifically for the kind of technology it uses which is different than tablets. It's very easy on the eyes, resembles the look and feel of real paper and you can read it easily when you're outside in the sun. Tablets, as well as my phone, kill my eyes (which are super sensitive) but my Paperwhite doesn't. The only drawbacks to it are the lack of color (as I've read some books that use different colored text for certain reasons. Plus colorful artwork and maps show up in black and white and at low resolutions) and not being able to flip back and forth to reference stuff, like maps, quickly and easily. The Lord of the Rings was a difficult one for me because of all the geological references I wanted to keep looking up on the different maps. I ended-up just using high quality printouts of the maps which I kept next to me. Worked perfectly. That's one story that's a lot of fun to track your characters progress.

Adds are irrelevant to the reading experience. They don't pop-up, they are not animated, they don't take reading space and there is no waiting time added. They are just your screen when the Kindle is asleep, and there is a bottom bar in the library's screen (only in this screen). To remove them means to get the generic screensavers (e.g. instead of a book offer you get a picture of a puzzle), and to be able to list one or two more books. I recommend you get it with the adds so you save some money.

Modern research is showing this to cause The problem as well as blepharitis, MGD etc on the eye you’re sleeping on. In college I tried reading Les Miserabés which clocks in at well over 1,000 pages. I tried reading in bed and it was uncomfortable no matter the position. It hit me in the nose more than once. I tried reading it while running on the treadmill, the print was too small and holding the pages in place was a pain. So I could basically only sit and read it at a table like some kind of monk. I don’t care how much you like the feel of a book that’s not convenient. With an ereader you can take it anywhere, and if you happen to live abroad like I do you don’t have to struggle with the meager supply of English language books available.

I had a moment a year and change ago when I moved out of my parents place into my own...and discovered the inconvenience of moving your physical library in multiple boxes into a new apartment and simply having no room for multiple book shelves, especially for books you realize that you may not care for anymore. I realized that at a certain point I can't keep doing physical books for everything and my locay library doesn't have everything I need (also easy to get charges because I take long to read thus late charges), so it was time to get into Kindle. Got a Kindle Paperwhite for Christmas last year and it's been beneficial for me to keep reading without stressing out about physical storage solutions, especially for things I may never read again.

My current Paperwhite WITHOUT offers only has a handful of images that it cycles through as a sleep screensaver. Much like you, I looked upon eReaders with disdain for a long time. Then my gf brought a Kindle Keyboard home one day that she had purchased from a co-worker. It wasn't very long before the convenience of it outweighed any previous objections I had to them. It was replaced by the 1st gen Paperwhite, which I've had since, but I'll likely upgrade to the new Oasis soon. I honestly can't remember the last time I read a physical book, although I was forced to order a couple the other day because they were unavailable as ebooks, so it looks like I'll be breaking that streak soon.

You can scan your paper-only books into PDF, or, if you're really dedicated, OCR and edit them into EPUB or MOBI, especially for your most precious publications. One reason I got the Oasis was for its slightly larger screen, which makes the PDFs a little easier to read. Do some searches and check book junkie forums to learn about specific software tools.

Thanks for your review Mike! Very keen on the paperwhite now... Just so you know, you've not done anything to ruin your eyes. For all of us, somewhere between 40 - 50 years old (depending on genetics) the lens inside the eye starts to loose its elasticity, and we cannot magnify to the same extent. Hence the need for readers (aka: cheaters). Your LASIK treated the surface of the eye (sounds like it was 100% successful), you're now experiencing the deteriorating of the lens inside the eye. This is the sucker that later in life may develop cataracts. Again, not triggered by your reading. Reading at night of an iPad or phone screen messes with your melatonin levels, which can screw with your sleep (like you mention near the end of your vid). Staring at light when all else is dark can give you a headache/eyestrain. And no, I'm not an ophthalmologist, but I work with one (I'm a laser technician and manager of a LASIK clinic). Again, thanks for your vid! And again, don't panic, you've not triggered anything to kill your eyes.

100% agreed! the ipad has been my main machine for almost a decade at this point. I have a work computer that stays at my desk and so for my own personal time the Ipad is more or less my personal laptop. Even more so now that you can have a keyboard and mouse on it. With that said as I get older (and as someone who has to be in front of a computer all day) I have noticed my reading started cutting down recently. I really hadn't realize I had a tough time concentrating on my ipad due to the light. I start wearing computer glasses and that helped but I had heard that nothing beats an e-ink ereader. Now I had the kindle oasis and what difference it makes! I am back to reading many books a week and its awesome. Maybe after pandemic is over and I am not stuck in front of my computer as much (I am management so i would have meetings with people in a room as opposed to on zoom) I might switch back to just carrying my ipad around, but for now its been great to use kindle (and it doesn't weigh anything so it might not be a big deal to still carry it around with me)

I have this nook 3 and the decisive factor between this and the paperwhite was the physical buttons and the warm light. The Paperwhite is just perfect and is one of the best and so sleek and beautiful. But if you want the extra eye protection, whenever you decide to upgrade, I suggest an ereader with the warm light. I can actually feel in my eyes as soon as I adjust the already easy on the eyes ereader light into the warm amber light, my eyes feel different. The Glowlight 3 is on the affordable side and has the touchscreen plus the press down buttons (it matters to some) or can upgrade to the new generation kindle Oasis which is expensive. But we in the ereader world are hoping for a kindle Voyage 2 soon. You can do what I did, go to a Barnes and Noble and test try their Nooks (they also have a big waterproof 7.8" screen version) and go to a Best Buy and test try the Kindles. But your switch from ipad to the amazing kindle Paperwhite is a WIN.

I just bought a Kindle Paperback during Prime Day a few days ago and saw your Update Video (then came to see this one) because I was concerned about the "Jankiness" of the Paperwhite and I am glad to know that it's normal. I bought it with Ads after another reviewer on Amazon said we can buy it with Ads and pay afterwards to remove them (and not get taxed on the difference). I have a Kindle Fire as well that I got as a gift and I agree, those Ads can drive you crazy but you can pay $15 to remove them from your Fire ($20 for Paperwhite) through your Amazon account under Devices. So far the Ads on the Kindle haven't been noticeable much especially if it's left on an open book page, which I always seem to, but I love knowing now that I have the option of removing them when they do start getting annoying. (I will paste this comment on your Update Video in case your Subscribers would like info on Ads on a Paperwhite or on the removal option). Thank you for these great reviews!

Even when the outer layer of my eye deteriorated for a bit my kindle was the only "lit" screen I could manage. I am so happy you tried this and are enjoying it. I saw your 6th month update video as well and am so happy for you. I will likely rewatch your Oasis upgrade video again because I just updated to the oasis and I am terrified to open the box!

As I got older my eyesight forced me from paper to Kindle, I thought it was common knowledge that backlit screens on tablets and phones are bad for prolonged use, I don't even use the Paperwhite but the standard unlit screen 70 pounds for that is also much cheaper than a tablet, and going weeks without looking for a charger is great. The font adjustment and bookmark was a revelation after paper, and I honestly wouldn't go back except for large reference books.

I think it's kind of like when my folks were reluctant to move from 8 tracks & vinyl to cassettes and CD. I've spent my whole life reading from hardcovers and nothing can beat that. But this is definitely the way to go while reading in dark/in bed.

I have little tips for constant reading on a tablet: 1. If you have the budget, buy glasses with anti computer glare radiation thing (I don't know how it called in English). 2. Put a matte screen protector on your tablet (I have Paperlike for iPad). 3. Switch on auto colour adjustment on your tablet. For example, the white colour won't be true white when you're reading in the dark, but slightly yellowish. 4. Don't use white paper black ink or jet black paper white ink on your ebook setting. Use the cream/ivory paper or matte black paper (I use Scribd).

Next gen ipads have mini leds with infinite contrast. So blacks are pure black. Then there's a blue light filter. So you can have light yellow text on pure black background and you won't have the eye strain. Although I do totally see a use for the kindle... Like if I'm on vacation or in a public place, I'd much rather have a kindle than the iPad. Less worry when it comes to theft or getting wet.

I used to not have any interest in having an e-reader because I was fine with having a small selection of paper books and to borrow the rest from the Library. A few years ago my boyfriend and a friend were kind enough to give me a gently used Kindle Fire as well as some Amazon credits. Eventually I bought a new Kindle Fire when the charging port started failing on it which I have very much enjoyed and am so glad to have one. Last year I bought a Kindle Paperwhite on Prime day for a really good deal because I wanted something I could read easier outside when it's bright out, can handle getting a little wet and easier on my eyes. I'm so glad that I decided to buy one as I use it quite a bit, really enjoy how the ink reads like a book which is really easy on my eyes particularly at night or out in full daylight and still use my Kindle Fire too especially for graphic novels. When my Paperwhite arrived, I also was surprised how like it was. I love how easy it is to slip either Kindle in my pocket and much easier to travel with though I do still enjoy physical books and own quite a lot. The only downside is not having any color for the covers or pictures in some of the nonfiction books I've read.

I got the Kindle Voyage when it first came out, use Calibre to make backup copies of all my books (so I can read them on any computer, even if Amazon disappears), and I just ordered a Kindle Oasis. Search for plugins and techniques to allow Calibre to deal with DRM, rentals, and other content restrictions. Without Calibre, I would have to settle for poorer quality e-readers. I know your Paperwhite is still new, but the Oasis, with the warm color light and bigger screen, would be worth considering for you, especially to mitigate the eyesight concerns. When I get my Oasis, I will continue using the Voyage for commuting, but switch to Oasis for home and bedtime use. At 62, I still don't use glasses and work hard to maintain my health overall. Proper nutrition, detox, and athletics help as much as specific attention to eyesight.

Really enjoyed your video. I’m 50 and I have to be honest with you, the eye thing happens to all the people who are lucky enough to live long lives. Eyes get weaker as we age. It sucks but it can’t be helped. You may be able to put things off a few years but not the long term. I’m hard core kindle and cailbre user. It took me time to get used to my kindle as well but it’s my preferred method of reading now.

I know it’s very late. I hope your enjoying it, but the ads aren’t that bad at all. From my experience with the paper white 3 and 4 the ads are only on the “lock screen” before you swipe to unlock it. That’s the only time I personally have them. I’m not exactly sure how the kindle is with out the ads though.

Unfortunately, I'm still snobbish about actual physical books. Reading for long periods of time on an eReader isn't good for our eyes, and it tends to give me headaches. But at the same time, while I was a teacher a few years ago, I did some research as many schools started switching to reading assignments on eReaders. And I discovered that our brains process words on physical media better. We retain information better, we learn more from the information, and we process it more efficiently. I know there are plenty of advantages to eReaders, and I do have some books for my Kindle (Amazon Prime Reads gives you a free eBook (you choose out of six options) each month), but I just feel better reading physical books. Plus, the nerd in me feels the compulsion to have a collection of books to show off on my shelves! I know I come across as a crochety old man (I'm only a year older than you.... but I feel much older!!!), and after all, eReaders do help the environment.... but I just can't get into them.

But unless you really want the audio features, why go with a Kindle when you can get a Kobo, especially if you are already using Calibre to curate your ebooks? I myself use a 7" Kobo Libra H2O, which has all the other current e-reader bells & whistles, has an asymmetric "handle" plus physical page buttons, and is waterproof so I can read in the tub.

You are probably experiencing what everyone does at about that age-presbyopia. It’s why people in their 40s start needing reading glasses. That said, using an e-reader instead of an LCD screen will reduce eye fatigue. So your decision to switch to a Kindle makes sense. The reason I resist it, despite having had Kindles since the very first butt-fuggly white one, is that I despise the pagination on Kindle books. Locations instead of page numbers just suck; people don’t think in multiple thousands of “pages” nearly as well as they do when page numbers are in the hundreds. And, yes, distraction is a very real problem when reading on an iPad, which is why I’m considering switching back to a Kindle, even though most of my books have been purchased from Apple Books because their pagination is much better IMHO.

Thanks for the reader review and not a tech review. I never knew about ipads effecting my eye sight or the black background being a problem. I usually use my kindle but i have the 2nd gen kindle with the keyboard 🤣 It was a 18th birthday present...I'm 27 now. I appreciate this very much. By the way, my bookshelf would drive you nuts. Most of my books were from being a broke kid so I bought whatever was cheaper. Including mass paper backs mixed with 2nd hand hard covers in the same series. It KILLS me. 😂 I totally understand your ocd about wanting it all uniform. One day I'll get there.

According to an eye specailist I consulted, the failing /changing eyesight as we get older, has to do with just that - aging and the changes our bodies go through. Tiredness and dryness in the eyes has most to do with whether we have sufficient light when reading, if we are working a lot in front of computers and very important - that we get glasses/ lenses in time and thus prevent straining our eyes for seeing clearly. I am reading on both Kindle Paperwhite, iPad and “analogue” books, and I find they have each their own strengths. Kindle is wonderful when sitting outside on sunny days, iPad (prefer the Mini for reading) is great for reading in bed because it has its own light (and I like the black background when it is dark) and a sharp screen, and paper books are overall nice, except the weight (on many books). That said - if you have trouble with your eyes, talk with your eye specialist before consulting the net. 😊

I know I'm late to the party but I have 3 Kindles. I have one and I brought one for each of my kids. We also have cell phones, tablets, iPads, and laptops and because of that we all wear glasses now and I also developed an astigmatism. My eye doctor actually told me about the Kindle to prevent my eyes from getting worst. I have had my Kindle for 4 years...still going strong, but I do still occasionally crave a physical book in my hands so I still do buy physical copies of books.🤷

The Amazon tablets that are ad supported only have an ad on the home screen just before opening it up. Never had an issue with ads loading up. It’s only on the home screen when you turn it on. Also, your eye vision changes after the age of 40. That’s normal. Tried the basic Amazon Kindle reader and my eyes cannot handle it. Might go with the paperwhite, but not sure yet. My reading is much better on my phone and iPad, also the Amazon fire tablet. BTW You shared lots of good information, thank you.

I struggle with reading. I love it, and miss how into books I once was, but it's gotten very hard. Words move on me, I feel like the words are too close to my face or are too tiny (depending on the book size/font), I have a hard time just trying to remember the context of the previous sentence if I can even remember the previous few words, It's very hard if not impossible to "view" or picture the described scenes in my mind (probably due to a mix of previous issues listed) and etc... But, upon buying the Oasis, it's easier and I don't know why. It's only been a day or so, but it's a noticeable change and I feel the drive to read returning again. Let's just say, I'm very thankful for this man's videos, because I wouldn't have discovered the Oasis without them.

I really love ereaders I’ve been using them since Christmas 2015 when I got the kindle paperwhite that came out that year I used that for about 4 and a half years until I found that it was getting too small. At the point that I found the screen was getting too small for me I asked for a kindle oasis 2019 for my birthday in 2019 and my nan purchased it for me I used it until 14th June this year, at this point I was that oasis screen was getting a bit small so I purchased myself a kobo forma which has an 8 inch screen. It’s much better for me now so I’m reading more. I’m severely sight impaired so an ereader is a must have tool for me as I can make the font bigger to fit my liking.

I spent the last few years reading on my phone. I was reluctant to give up my android reading app that I had gotten accustomed to and love so much (moon+reader), and android-based e-ink e-readers are expensive, often out of stock, and apparently have a lot of weird little issues so I never bit the bullet and got one. I said fuck it and got a paperwhite instead. There is definitely stuff I miss, like my android app could sort books by series and just show me all the dresden files books, or w/e. And it could be set to show the time left in the chapter and the entire book at once, the paperwhite can only do one or the other. And I could send my highlights to google keep or wherever I wanted. With the paperwhite it just sends it to a document that I then have to open on my PC and do something with, a document which also contains all my bookmarks so it's kind of a pain in the ass. But man, the difference in eyestrain is definitely noticeable. I would say it's even easier on your eyes than a physical paper book, tbh, because getting the perfect lighting situation for reading on paper is really hard to do.
