Well, back before power meters, we always measured performance with heart rate. The more watts rider puts out, the higher the heart rate. When it goes into anaerobic, rider has eventually to back off to recover. The fitter rider gets, the more watts he can put out at the same heart rates. We called it "raising VO2max," that is, training the slow twitch muscle fibers just below anaerobic threshold. If it hurts, back off just enough go regain form. The aerobic fibers will expel lactic acid. Notice how easy the pros make it look?

Nice content coach. 👌 I have started cross-training with running, and trying to keep my HR down in zone 2 (as a new unfit runner) requires great discipline, and hopefully, it will improve my cycling. I hope you can sort your back out. 🤞 A question, as we need to be mindful of our whole health picture (nutrition, sleep, stress, etc), do you subscribe to data driven, sleep tracking, resting HR, HRV and readiness scores? 🧐 And further to this, do you use a watch or some other fitness tracker while off the bike? ⌚️

Could be heat related - always check with breathing and RPE but if it continues to repeat then just reduce a few watts

It may feel twitchy. But if it is needed to make your bike work then it has to do.

Imagine a race car with no tach. That’s the modern power geek who doesn’t know anything about HR training.
