@ryanrrx I always get rid of micro chips with black compound loaded leather when the edge is convex. It's awesome as you say. But when it is a V edge, a black compound will deepen the edge angle. If I needed a V edge again even after chipped, I would need a #220 stone. It will be much tougher than stropping. So every single my outdoor knife is convexed except for this knife. I just wanted to leave a water stone V edge sharpening tutorial of my way on my channel with this knife. Thank you!

@theyash06 I honestly recommend Chosera #400 and #1000 stones, and DLT two sided leather strop and Enkay green compound and Bark River white compound. KaBar military knives have 40 degree angle inclusive and you will need to lessen it to 35 degrees in my experience. My short KaBar has a zero grind 30 degree Scandi edge. I don't think you will need such an extensive edge reprofiling. Chosera #400 stone reprofiles its edge angle very fast. Thanks.

I now have Chosera #400, #800, and #2000 stones. When I don't need to change the edge angle or restore nicks, I skip the #400 stone. But I always use the #2000 stone to achieve the finer finish. My #800 stone leaves a toothy edge. And the #2000 stone polishes it off. And finally I use Bark River white compound loaded leather to make a razor sharp edge. But I guess you can go to the strop from your #1000 stone. It will just need you a bit longer time for stropping. You absolutely don't need #8K.

This is an old video of my sharpening. I now have Chosera 400, 800, 2000, 3000 sequence. Stropping makes the edge twice or more sharper than the final stone. When I need a convex edge to a regular steel like A2, I don't use the 3000 stone but Bark River black compound. When I need a Scandi or V edge, or in case the steel is very hard like 3V, I use 3000 stone and directly go to Bark River white compound. DLT Two Sided Paddle Strop cannot be defeated by others. Please go to DLT Trading. Thanks.

From the introduction, you demonstrate a rusty edge. What conclusion should the viewer conclude? Does the convex edge, polished edge prevent rust formation? I must say that for a long time I was never able to produce a truly sharp knife edge. This was very frustrating, the edge angles and the edge refinement were never scary sharp. Now I have adopted your convex edge approach and in particular the stropping technique was nothing short of enlightening. Now my knife edges are sharp and my t

@jdg2001 I used an artificial nagura came with King #8000 from the company for King #6000. Then it did nothing but making the sharpening feel smoother. Artificial Nagura will not comprise good abrasives. Natural Nagura can be different. But every grit of Chosera stones makes very good slurry from itself and the stone itself takes an edge very well and it is no slippery. Its sharpening feel is very different from Kings. I now use no King stones. Thanks.
@virtuovice13 жыл бұрын
@havoc6g King produces a solid #800 stone. But it doesn't produce a solid #4000 stone. The #4000 stone on this combination stone has rougher and softer surface than my Naniwa #3000 stone unexpectedly. But the sharpened edge was sharper than Naniwa #3000 stone. King makes #6000 and #8000 and I have the both. But the sharpened edge is no sharper than Naniwa #3000. So I like King #4000 stone on this combo very much to make a new V edge. The stone seems relatively easy to wear though. Thank you!

1. rough side 2. I start with 240 grit. If you are not used to doing it, 320 or 400 grit will be better since higher grits grind slow. Anyway 800 grit is too fine to start with. Thanks.
@snizzle51515111 жыл бұрын
I saw your older hollowed stone, do you now use something like a diamond stone to flatten your stones after use to stop them hollowing out? might save you some money especially on your higher grit more expensive stones, great video by the way :D
@UdNeedaMiracle9 жыл бұрын
I just bought a DMT Coarse diamond stone (320 grit I think), a King 1000 grit, and a king 6000 grit, as well as a knives plus strop block. I've been trying to sharpen some of my cheaper knives lately, which are also very dull. I do my best to keep a consistent angle, and I feel like I do a pretty good job of that. I work each side of the blade until I feel an even burr on the other side and then switch sides. When I feel the burr is there on the second side I go to the next stone, and of course I finish with the strop. Some of these knives I've spent 2-3 hours on over the last few days, and they are nowhere close to what I'd call sharp. They are nicely polished, but not mirror polished, and they are definitely not sharp enough to shave arm hair. They barely cut paper smoothly. Any advice?
@drivingmuffin9 жыл бұрын
UdNeedaMiracle Just keep practising at getting your angles consistent, that is the key. You can try to use different sharpening techniques too. Also, remember to use very light strokes on your last passes on each stone you are finishing on, that tends to help a lot. And when you are sharpening, it is better to go too low and hit the shoulder of the edge, instead of going too high and destroying the apex of the edge :-)

I too had rust spots develop on AUS 8 - but that was in the post on the way to me! Talking just a day in the post, and the blade had rusted. It was bead blasted, which does not help in rust prevention, but AUS 8 no longer features in my knives. For me, 8Cr13MoV is a far better low end steel, at a similar price point.

@gravediggermax I don't use this stone now. It was a money saving stone but cut slow. So I invested money and got Naniwa Chosera stones which cut extremely fast and made me a good knife sharpener. Stones are much more important than the technique. So I recommend you 3 Chosera stone set of #400, #1000, #3000. They are selling at toolsforworkingwood (.com). Thanks.

I have a question, if I have a very very dull knife, is 800 grit too high to start on? Should I buy a 240 grit stone in addition? Thank you.
@VampyrDjevelDeity8 жыл бұрын
If it's as dull as I'm thinking, yes, 800 might be a little high. I like DMT plates for heavier material removal, but that's me. I'm confident you should do good with a 240 grit stone.

King stones cut very slow while Chosera and Shapton stones cut very fast. I love Shapton Ha-no-kuromaku (Pro) 1000 grit stone the best to sharpen a very dull knife. Thanks.
@virtuovice12 жыл бұрын
4000 and 6000 seem too fine to me. I would strop with the white compound loaded leather instead. Anyway the factory made secondary V edge regularly has 30 degree angle. So if your sharpening angle was a bit smaller than 15 degrees per side, you would just grind the shoulder with the 1000. If the initial stone is 400 or 600, it will grind off the shoulder to reach the edge line. If the starting stone is still the 1000, your sharpening angle should be a bit larger than the factory angle. Thanks.

While I'm not Japanese, I use the King 800/4000, and I would recommend 30-40 minutes, not just 10. I tried shorter soak times, and the stones did not cut well. I've found at the 30-40 minute range the stones are ideal and work VERY well. Test for yourself. Do a sharpening with a 10 minute soak, then on another day after the stones have completely dried, do a 30-40 minute soak, see which one works best. I definitely would not suggest really long soaks or permasoaking the King 800/4000, and I'd imagine other King stones. I accidentally did and the 800 got very soft/muddy. I wish you the best!

I have ever experienced the King 6000 stone. It cuts extremely slow in comparison to the quality stones like Chosera or Shapton. The King 6000 will need you 5 times longer period of time to make even worse finish.
