It's finished! Or at least 99 percent finished, so as always I didn't quite get everything done, but got excited and took it out for a drive anyway. It's lovely.
I think I enjoyed building this more than any other kit - yes, I has a few little issues and it's not perfect, but it's just so scale and detailed. I found it a real pleasure to work on.
I need to get some lights in (which will be fiddly) and look at gearing it down - both the gearing and the size of the battery compartment mean 2S is absolutely the way to go - but otherwise this was a great first run. It's smooth and articulates really well, though it's inevitably pretty bouncy given the absence of any damping.
It's even reasonably tough, as I discovered by rolling it off an embankment... 😬🤦‍♂️
The truck so far:
King Kong CA30 6x6 kit
Russian 'herringbone' 95mm tyres (part number: KK/D-T060)
Hobbywing 1080
25kg no-name servo
16T Surpass Hobby 5-slot brushed motor (planned motor didn't fit!)

WOW, what a bloody awesome rig, your a credit to the hobby of RC. It’s hard to put it into words, a perfect build, scale, landscape, lighting, filter and photography. Great effort, only one word actually comes to mind and that’s moist, and very moist at that !! Love it 👍

Great scale video, I like videos where people turn the steering in a very real way. These rigs are not about a fast servo. Nice work!

Another spectacular video. A super scale truck in a super scale location. I loved the shot at 00:21. It would make a great laptop wallpaper. The way you played with the lighting and the sunlight was really cool. Thanks for your hardwork bringing this content. Many of us enjoy relaxing to your videos.

Wicked Steve. She looks ace. Nice filter effect on the video too. There really is something about the CA30 that just looks really scale on video. Really nice the first over head shot. Nailed it.

Wow, Steve! The new truck looks amazing, you did a great job with the paint and detailing. I think this is one of your best run videos. The lighting was just spot-on, the opening shots were gorgeous! Looks like a new favourite - those messages on the box were not far off! Take it easy, mate! :O)

Thanks Mark! I was hoping for a few clouds over the mountains to light up in the sunset, but they'd disappeared by that point. It was still lovely though (if so cold I couldn't actually steer by the end!). Not sure about the promise of infinite power, but this truck's certainly got sturdy style and is really fun to film... 😁 Hope you're well, and at least now you've got a nice new lunchbox to take back to school!

Awesome to see it running and to read that you like it, I have been tossing up between this or a Cross Rc HC6, might have just made up my mind.
@rccrawlersmid-wales645
@rccrawlersmid-wales645 3 жыл бұрын
I have an HC6 as well, and to be honest - given the price difference - I'd have to recommend the CA30. Okay, the Cross is a bit bigger, probably a bit more rugged and easier to get parts for, but it doesn't articulate as smoothly and the gearshift can be a pain. Mine's also pretty loud, which I'm not that keen on. The HC does at least have dampers at the front for a less bouncy ride, but they're a weird design and not even strictly dampers... I'll probably fit some proper ones one day. Having said that, the HC6 is kind of in my bad books at the moment - once I get it sorted and enjoy a good drive I'll probably love it again!

As ever, your video is a work of art, with beautiful camera placement, exquisite light and nice, scale driving working together to showcase the excellence of the truck. It strikes me that, being an articulate sort of chap and being in possession of both a Cross RC and a King Kong military truck, you´re uniquely well-placed to do a comparison video in which you discuss any pros and cons you might have noticed with regard to these two paragons of quality, both from the point of view of building them and driving them. Just a thought for the future : )

That was fast build! Nice video, i love it how suspension works. If remember right, 11t pinion gear is the smallest that fits. I have on my CA30 Kraz 12t pinion with 35t 3slot motor.

Ah ha, thanks! I've actually been dawdling towards completing this for weeks, but thanks to the magic of editing I look quite efficient. 😁 Thanks for the info, too - I haven't even checked how many teeth the stock pinion has yet, but I will! I got a basic 45T RC4WD 540 motor to go in this, but it was too long!

Great looking rig Steve and cracking cinematography too - perfect watch whilst having a brew 😁 The tyres were definitely worth the upgrade - they make the originals look way too small when I look at them now.

Thanks! 👍 These tyres are about 95mm tall, and the stock ones are actually 80mm - quite a big difference, really (bigger than I realised - I only just measured them). Definitely worth fitting.

I honestly find it hard to say... I'm always filming, so it's very stop/start. In all my other trucks I use a 2200mAh 3S, which is good for several miles of driving and probably 45 mins to 1hr of continuous slow crawling and trail running. That said, I have driven my (11lb) D90 up a 20% climb (it rises 945ft in just under a mile), in the snow - so pretty cold, obviously, which batteries hate - on just one pack. So maybe it would do a bit longer. But those packs don't fit in this truck - they're about 1.5mm too thick for the crate to shut properly! Given it's also too fast on the current motor and the stock gearing, I've found 2S better, but I only have a 1000mAh pack. That lasts maybe 30 mins of filming (after that I have to cram in a 3S and try not to whisky throttle it right off the trails...). I've got a 2200mAh 2S pack coming that should get me back to an hour or so. It's another Turnigy and only about £8.50 - bargain! Hope that helps. 👍
