In this extended action packed show, we attempt one of our most ambitious shots which we've been working on for over two years, we take a look at the new Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro RF lens to see what that strange dial on it does, we show you how easy it is to shoot video using your existing equipment, we have a challenger to the Nikon D850 and Canon 5Dsr to see if it can beat them for detail, we showcase some of the waterfall shots sent in by viewers and we explain everything you need to know about memory cards plus we have a couple of high spec ones to giveaway.
Our Feb Pt1 Show will be released on Sun 30th Jan 2022
Marcus's pistol grip tripod head is the Manfrotto 322RC2

Excellent episode... as usual. I’m not interested in everything you cover but you make it sooo watchable that I learn stuff I never knew I wanted to 😉 And Ruth, you are the perfect ‘anchor’ for this’d show. So smiley and happy and as cute as a button. Keep up the great work. Happy New Year 🥳

He's been trying to get that shot for ages. I was pleasantly surprised at how much of the moon and tree were drawn out of the fog by the edit software, too.

The thing about pixel shift isn't to create a larger resolution image, but to to capture full RGB values for each and every pixel. The result is better color rendering (which I preferred in this test over the 5DSR), and virtually zero noise. It's not going to magically add extra pixels and details. It's also meant for static subjects, but some photo editors can let you selectively combine the images. That would let you get the benefit of pixel shift on the land, but only use a single frame for the water movement. It looks like the point of that test was to compare details at ridiculous crop levels. That's good for the wow factor test result, but not practical in the real world. If I'm planning to make a final image zoomed in that much, I'll do it optically with a longer lens. When shooting high end gear, tests like this are splitting some very fine hairs. At this point, ergonomics, battery life, noise control, dynamic range, etc. are more important than how good the image looks cropped in far beyond what normal user would do.

This was not splitting any hairs. The difference was massive and very obvious even at normal enlargement.

I really can't wait to see that moon shot. Been watching you trying to get it for as long as this project came up on these videos, totally know the feeling of that determination, hope, frustration, and countless hours and miles spent to get that one shot. I've been doing the same with sunset behind the wind turbines, it's much easier in my case, however, the weather is just never in my favour. You'll get it sooner or later, best luck.

Great first show of the year!. I was very excited about the lunar Mission Possible as I remember watching the first part. Congratulations Marcus for keeping your cool in the middle of the fog and fingers crossed for the next attempt! I look forward to hearing Harry talking about video shooting. I am not envisaging buying a iPhone very soon but the features look great. I hope Harry would be able to suggest a more affordable mobile option (older iPhone or android?). I would however persevere with my Fuji X-T2 for the moment and hopefully gather plenty of information in the coming series.

Another really good episode. I'm looking forward to the comparison with the Sony A7R IV with its 61mp sensor. On paper it should win with that but it can also pixel shift, providing images of 240mp! Additionally, I have a similar Mission: Possible as I am going to photograph the moon behind a local TV transmitter on Tuesday evening as it is due to line up perfectly with a clear sky. Things could change though.

@PhotographyOnline
@PhotographyOnline 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Clive. The 5Ds won't be quite as sharp as the 5Dsr due to the anti-alias filter it has, which reduces detail. This was the major difference between the 5Dsr and and R5 when we tested them, so if you haven't seen that, give it a watch, as I would imagine the 5Ds is very similar (very slightly better) than the R5 for capturing detail. Thanks for watching.

Hi, thanks for another great show. If you use the augmented reality feature of Photopills whilst on location, you can see exactly where the moon will be in relation to the tree (for any chosen time/date), allowing you to place your tripod in the correct place, hopefully reducing the need for guess work or last minute rushing around. Unfortunately Photopills can't control the weather, maybe that will come in a future upgrade🙂
@PhotographyOnline
@PhotographyOnline 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Bob. We’ve tried that and it’s just not accurate. It seems to have an accuracy of around 2 degrees, which is nowhere near close enough for this shot. I only use such apps for my initial research, then just use first hand knowledge, as there’s no substitute for this.

10 years ago I used to get involved with the 7D versus the 5D2 argument about which was best. Many people sold the 7D to get the 5D immediately stating night and day epiphanies, but, when challenged they could never back their bold statements up with 2 side by side images to prove it. Then along came the 37 mega pixel A7r. This was the first camera which really did blow all others out of the water, and could be easily seen on small on screen images at any ISO settings. So, the A7r4 will be a very interesting challenger 😎 I have no Sony gear so have no dog in this fight, but Sony have transformed the camera market in the last 10 years. This type of challenge is the best type, no charts, just a straight up IQ punch up 👍

Excellent as usual. Thanks for using the Pentax K1 mk2...my latest Camera. I was left thinking ..oh that's the review...oh well. I use it with a Pentax 24-70mm f2.8 HD ED SDM WR lens. Purchased with thanks to Ffordes. Gutted that the Moonshot was so close. You'll get it Marcus... :)

Cheers Alistair. There’s nothing much wrong with the K1-II but it was obvious it wasn’t going to be a match for the 5Dsr so there was little point drawing it out. I would steer clear of the pixel shift mode though! Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed the part where we weren’t bashing your camera!

@@PhotographyOnline I have to admit the Pixel Shift isn't a mode I'll be using. I've been a Pentax User since my me-super in 1982. As I've hit a Birthday Milestone I also have a K3 mk3. Just loving it. I usually like Cars, Landscape & Wildlife. K1 for Static Paddock Cars & Landscape. K3 for Track & Wildlife. Thanks for the inspiration look forward to more excellent content. Cheers :)

@@PhotographyOnline, as a long time owner of the K1. Pixel shift is a very handy option to have. It requires certain conditions to get the most out of it. Scenes with movement are not ideal.

Great segment on iPhone for video. I had no idea how good iPhone is with video. One question I hope you can answer on the next episode. What is the best way to store your video footage without using up the phones storage or that in the cloud. Thanks for a great show. Jeremy

Pixel shift works but is so incredibly situational it is extremely dubious where as high res works all the time. Sony A7RIV, said it before will say it again. That's the mirrorless high res benchmark.
@PhotographyOnline
@PhotographyOnline 2 жыл бұрын
We would say that pixel shift doesn't work if it is so situational. What's the point in having inconsistent results. It's certainly not for us.

@@PhotographyOnline Yes, I think product photography in a studio with a sturdy tripod would work. Though I've read that even slight vibrations such as someone walking across a room or a vehicles passing outside can spoil the result. It needs computational photography in built to work well even in the few instances where it's viable. Something ALL the camera manufacturers are years behind on.

Hi. We don't tend to use flash, so it is not an area of expertise for us. The only time when we would consider using flash is in a studio, but we don't do a lot of this kind of work. Thanks for watching though.

@@PhotographyOnline Thanks for that. The only reason I asked is that in your title sequence you have a red squrrel jumping from one branch to another and it looks like a flash went off to capture the shot. Still a great show!

Previously, I found out that with the most widely used lens available for all cameras, which is the 24-70 2.8 lens that is currently available in version 2, neither the Nikon D850 nor Sony with pixel shift technology can show the details that the canon 5DSr shows. I feel that the best advantage of the canon 5DSr camera is that it has two processors for processing photos, except for the no filter, which makes this camera special.
@PhotographyOnline
@PhotographyOnline 2 жыл бұрын
The D850 also has no low pass filter (neither do many others) so this isn’t special the 5Dsr, but it certainly helps when comparing it to a camera which does have the filter. To be accurate, the 5Dsr also has the low pass filter, but then it has another filter to cancel this out.

@@PhotographyOnline The second option I mentioned is to have two processors. Which can help in details. Of course I have a 5DSR myself. It is very dreamy.

XQD devices are PCI devices which would allow for higher data transfer rates. However, XQD is proprietary (Sony) and quickly became the new MemoryStick. Sony doesn't learn very quickly. And we are glad the CFE protocol won.

I have to admit, the original test shot 40:57 is class. (The shadows need lifting and sharpness on the brow of the hill need correcting) Looking at the photoshopped version, I imagine it will only look cluttered and potentially unbalanced (to the right) if you get the shot you actually visualize. Best of luck with it but by the time the 6 year window closes on the next attempt, I feel you may look back at that test shot and think, ...I did it back then!
@PhotographyOnline
@PhotographyOnline 2 жыл бұрын
It’s all about getting the shot which is previsualised - the one which can’t easily be improved upon. The moon has to be in exactly the right position for the shot to work to it’s potential. There’s no “that’ll do” excuses with this one.
