I'd say Barrett was hurt more when he won the tournament. Before he won it, he had a great thing going with his Bad News Barrett gimmick, he had the massive podium and all that jazz, but after he won he just reverted to a generic king gimmick and was shunted back down the card.

Random request for future storyline arc, from a long time OSW fan.....ANYTHING during the prime WCW Monday Night Wars era. You guys greatly covered some pre-nWo WCW and events during the dying days of WCW. But it would be cool to cover that company during its popular period (both really good stuff and not so good stuff). I just think that would be cool and seeing you guys review something that you guys didn't get a chance to watch as much during the later half of the 90s.

So with this retrospective video being from 2018, I guess I can update it. (I may have to remind myself to update this every year). August/September 2019 would see them bring the tournament back and would see Baron Corbin win the tournament and bring back the king gimmick. Wasn’t anything special and didn’t do much of note with it. No big matches except for the 2020 Titan Towers MITB match and a Roman Reigns feud. Ran for almost two years until summer 2021 when Corbin lost the king gimmick to Shinsuke Nakamura. October 2021 would bring the tournament back with this year introducing a Queen Of The Ring tournament crowning a king and a queen at October’s Crown Jewel event in Saudi Arabia. Xavier Woods would win the KOTR tournament beating Finn Bálor and Zelina Vega would win the women’s tournament defeating Piper Niven. Woods would see some minimal success with the gimmick. His highest moment would be nearly defeating Roman Reigns on a SmackDown! episode (he would win via DQ). He’d get injured derailing the momentum for a bit and he’s since dropped the gimmick. Vega on the other hand would win a handful of matches and eventually would win the Women’s Tag Titles with Carmella. As of typing, she’s been out with an injury. Vega’s time as queen was virtually her playing King Booker. May 2024 sees the PPV itself return along with the tournament for the men and the women (2023 was promoted to do this but they changed it to Night Of Champions) and it happening in Saudi again. The winners get a crown and in a 2002 coded idea, a title opportunity at SummerSlam. GUNTHER would win for the men beating Randy Orton in the finals and Nia Jax would win for the women beating recent call up and fellow Irishwoman, Lyra Valkyria.

I would argue Mabel is worst and Billy Gunn second worst. Billy's career though really flopped after his win cause he was terrible as a singles. I know there were plans to have Gunn feud with Austin and he was supposed to get a big singles push but Vince came to the realization that Gunn couldn't cut it.

People were getting smart to business, the culture was changing from the 80's and the most gimmicky of gimmicks began to be seen as lame. Cutting those out meant having to replace those with something. It took a few years for that to manifest and concretize itself.

An idea I had for King of the Ring, if they wanted to bring it back, but only do the Semis and Finals and not use the king gimmick would be make the brackets split up between brands, the PPV Semis be like sports conference championships with RAW and SmackDown, and have the Finals be the RAW vs. SmackDown winner for a title match at SummerSlam, completely scrapping something like Extreme Rules for it.
