I've always kindof liked the idea that the organisation just flat do not understand their own emotions, or how they work. They're a group of people whose only common feature is a sort of ennui motivated by feeling like they don't belong in the world, like their existence is somehow illegitimate. Hence, their emotions are also illegitimate. Anything otherwise would challenge their worldview. It's part of why I think they're quite a good metaphor for depression; depressed people can show any kind of outward behaviour, from manic excitement to dissaffected loneliness, but tend to have a similar thread of feeling out of step with the world around them, and generally illegitimate, to the point of denying one's own feelings, or any stimulus which challenges the things your depression has told you are true. I'd also argue that scenes like the one with Roxas and Axel on the clocktower where Axel dismisses Roxas' fear aren't trying to convey that Axel is right, because it treats Roxas' fears, like most of the concerns of the more sympathetic organisation members, as legitimate. At least, I sure hope the revelation is 'the organisation's emotions were always there and valid, they just didn't understand them', both because I think it strengthens the pathos of the group as a whole if this whole time they were a bunch of guys trying to figure things out, who never had all the answers, and also because otherwise... yikes...

@samuelturner60766 жыл бұрын
Ok, the whole nobodies not having hearts and emotions, that’s technically true, let me break it down. Nobodies are formed when a person with a strong will/soul/mind looses their heart, their will and body persist and form a Nobody. The stronger the will of the person the higher rank their Nobody will be, for example the organisation members are the highest rank, having the strongest wills allowing them to retain their human form. As Nobodies utilise the soul and body of the original person, (remember soul in KH can also be called the mind ie the persons memories) they still retain their memories from their human life, and act accordingly, basically it’s muscle memory in a sense, as since the Nobody knows what it’s like to have experience the emotion, and knows what their human form would do in this situation they act accordingly, therefore any situation in which they a Nobody seems like they are acting with emotion is just a mere act, basically the muscle memory from their previous life. SPOILERS: But that’s not all, this only really applies to Nobodies in the truest sense, for example you know how days 1-7 Roxas was basically a zombie, that’s because he’s a complete bumbling newborn Nobody, and although Roxas is a special case I’m pretty sure most of the others members more “emotional” aspects were also nonexistent/toned down at conception. Any actions they would take based on their memories would probably be more matter of fact like, and less human emotion like. Now this is because as we learn later in KHDDD, although nobodies have no hearts, it’s not like that’s the optimal condition, just like how when we get a scar our body repairs the damage, Nobodies slowly start to grow new hearts over time in order to replace the ones they lost. Therefore Xemnas is dancing around the truth when he’s telling the organisation members that the only way to be complete is to form Kingdom Hearts as if left alone long enough they’ll probably eventually get new hearts, though how good those hearts are is unknown ie is it just as good as the old? Worse? Better? So basically Nobodies that have existed for a while have slivers of a heart, which grows over time, therefore they are not fully feeling the emotion but act like they have it based on both their memories and the sliver of heart that they posess.

I felt eventually Dan would have to pause the video to respond to what was going on. The scenes keep moving at a brisk pace it's hard to say anything during the breaks in between scenes for fear of missing new dialogue or breaking the rhythm of an event. So Dan's response to the story had to be condensed into one or two word thoughts. Good to finally see something bother him so much that he actually forced a break to get it all out. I imagine it was difficult trying to abbreviate everything you want to say into 2-second bites.

I hear you and agree regarding the whole "nobodies can't feel" thing, Dan. It was a somewhat dubious claim even prior to 358/2, but the extent to which this game builds its characters on actions and thoughts clearly grounded in emotion makes their continued belief in their lack of emotions perplexing. If there was a thematic or narrative purpose to the characters saying one thing and behaving totally contrary throughout this game, it blew past me in my own playthrough. I'm hoping revisiting the story this way will clarify things a bit.
This entire episode I thought of the sound when they bite the ice cream and at the end Carrie read my mind like a genie
@rmsgrey6 жыл бұрын
It's not clear whether Nobodies were supposed to be capable of actually feeling (rather than pretending to feel) emotions back in CoM, but Axel definitely felt emotions in KH2 - his last words about Roxas (and Sora) making him feel like he had a heart make it clear that it was intentional, not just bad writing. So in Days, the idea that Nobodies can't feel is known by the devs to be false, but believed by the Organization members. There's a bit more to reveal in the remaining games.

Hahaha, this was the best episode yet! You echoed my thoughts exactly when Axel was saying they don't have feelings, thank you for that. And pausing the gameplay to explain stuff, just hilarious. When Carrie added that watching them bite ice cream made her teeth hurt, that's what I've been thinking for episodes! THAnk you! Maybe they don't have feelings, at least in their teeth... Honestly tho, thought it was pretty annoying when she "corrected" what Axel was saying about girls. I mean, the whole point is neither of them really know what they're talking about, right? Plus, if you don't think what he was saying is right, so what? You don't jump in when Jafar is giving his evil monologue about obtaining power or whatever, saying that that's bad. Maybe it was just for comedic effect, I didn't find it funny but different strokes for different folks. But I couldn't help but think "Let Axel say what he will, and let me decide for myself if I agree before you jump in and tell me the "right" answer."

Nobodies don't feel scared? So they have no fear? Well, that must explain why they keep throwing themselves recklessly at Sora, one by one (and sometimes Riku), only to get eliminated, and none of them ever stop and think that fighting Sora is a bad idea. I mean, I can see Luxord being a late-game enemy. He's a gambler and he seeks risk. But someone like Saïx never thinks, "This boy and his friend have already disappeared 11 of us. What are the odds that I can make it through this one?" Fear is an important thing to feel, and Inside Out illustrates that. We have fear to keep ourselves out of dangerous situations and so we can assess risk. Without fear, we'd all have gone extinct long ago. Too much fear is bad, of course. But having no fear at all is even worse. (Also, it's pretty obvious Demyx fears a lot of things.)

29:30 with all the weird lore and plot points kingdom hearts has, this was by far the stupidest piece of dialogue in the entire series

Well, I hate Riku now *_HE HURT THE CHILD!_* (I also hate Saix, of course, but he's always been a dick) Also, once again, they send Roxas on a mission to kill a Pureblood Heartless for no reason. Oh, and Roxas saying he couldn't bear to forget about Axel or Xion...seeing what happens later, that's... Gosh, this game just makes me cry...

gaddang, the KH team REAALLY overdoes that "Phil says he has two of something then says three things" gimmick. it was funny the first few times but now... ugh...

Best not to read or watch Black Clover then, because like three quarters of the main characters are like Phil, only cranked up even more. Yuki Tabata seems to find the running gag as the pinnacle of humor.

The coliseum is used so often is because the setting is Kingdom hearth invention. So they don't have to pay royalties to Disney Hercules as long they don't use the character likeness those they do have to pay royalties. I think this is why in Birth by sleep Hercules is just silhouette if I remember correctly.

Alright. I'm a bit. Miffed with you for disliking this bit so much. Because this is something that a lot of people with mental health issues have. It's called anhedony and there's variations of it. One of the more consistent things that I hear about in the mental health sector is clients who can't feel their emotions anymore. Only state them and act on them. It's a very weird thing, but it is definitely something that happens and imagine that in Japan, this is even more true due to the stress people are under. This isn't something you can find out easily, I know that. But I wish it wasn't a _complaint._ Because people like this exist, including me.

Nobodies claiming to not have feelings isn't the same as that. They're not saying they don't feel, but that those feelings are artificial. It's literally a metaphysical world building debate, not a representation of a real mental health issue despite the surface similarities. Dan's not complaining about real people not feeling their feelings due to mental health issues he's criticizing characters for falling for an obvious lie by clearly displaying emotions whether they have memories or not while claiming they can't feel. I don't say this to minimize the serious issue you're bringing up but to clarify that's not at all what Dan was commenting on and I'd hope that with this in mind you don't take it as an attack on something so personal.

@@PepperoniMage Nobodies don't have hearts. That's the canon metaphysical explanation for why nobodies can't feel things. They have lost their connection to who they are and to those that defined them. This is such a strong force in the Kingdom Hearts universe that lacking such an identity literally makes your body able to transform itself since it has nothing tying it down. This is also a reference to húndún, the 'unformed' chaos from which all things were made, often described as a sack or an egg. Your explanation isn't really accurate. I appreciate the time you took to write it, but I'm afraid you've not really understood this part of the Kingdom Hearts lore. Which is fine, it's a loveable mess.
