I watched this movie for the first time as the theatrical version, and I simply didn't like the movie. A friend had to convince me to watch it again, but watch the director's cut instead. I didn't really want to, to be honest. But once I did, it was like DAMN! Suddenly, I really liked the movie. Now I'd say it's a great movie. Such a massive difference between the cuts - probably the largest difference of any movie.

So true! I had the theatrical release DVD for so long and only got the director’s cut a few months ago. It blew my mind at how good it was. If they had released the director’s cut originally in the theaters there is no doubt in my mind that this movie would have received multiple Oscars.

@@MrFarnanonical nobody is perfect but he was a "Just" conqueror honoring his words of giving safe passage to the christian people who last time had their soldiers massacre and rape Muslims when Jerusalem was conquered by them. He even gave money to the common people when he had too much. He died poor but I'm sure he knew it was worth it. His men even hated him for not allowing to ransack Jerusalem so they can loot and take revenge on the Muslims who were massacred on the last conquest. What was important to him was Jerusalem because of that it had a peaceful transition not a chaotic one. Many Christians even praised him as a model leader even kings and the pope knows his good reputation.

The Hospitaler character has been thought to be an angel. Notice how he never talks to anyone except for Balian and also how he just disappears. Also pay attention to his actual lines.

I would expand that to you he only speaks to people with Godfrey or Balian present. In this, the director's cut edition he replies to: Godfrey's brother the lord and his nephew Jamie Lannister (my German friend is a close student of the law) He speaks to the Marshall during Balian's introduction but he's just an observer when Guy and Marshall are arguing over whether to go to war.

@@dudermcdudeface3674 well not really, you did have assaults, the difference is they were slower. the towers would have been near the walls for a day or two before they tried climbing on the walls (the main purpose of real siege towers is to clear the walls useing archers/missile troops)

Yes this movie has inaccuracies, mostly taking liberties with the people and events, but compared to 90% of the other medieval movies out there, this movie gets soo much right in terms of costuming, armor, weapons, daily life... Hell it even gets the style of glassware right.

The real Bailen was pretty heroic, what we do know of his real life is pretty amazing, but there would be no way to make a dramatic movie out of what little we know about his personal life. He was born in Jerusalem, and was actually the stepfather of Sybilla and Baldwin (the king). The Mass knighting did happen, the conversation between him and Saladin is supposedly nearly verbatim. Raymond De Chattion was pretty much totally true to life. Saladin was pretty close to the real person as well. I am going off a few different documentaries about it so who knows for sure, but honestly this movie gets a lot more right than it gets credit for.

I love this film. The Director's Cut is ten times better than the theatrical cut. When it first came out, the theatrical cut felt like an incomplete movie with unjustified character motivations. This version restores all of that. It feels like a better rounded story, if not an outright historical epic masterpiece.

@@tigqc He's credited in the movie simply as "Hospitaler"; named for the Order he is pledged to. My theory had been that he was the spirit of John the Baptist; the patron saint of the order. My theory about his identity was especially compelled by when you see David Thewlis' head at the foot of the cross; John the Baptist was beheaded, after all. And the way he said "My Order is with the army" - but I suppose that whether he is the spirit of the Baptist or God Himself, the statement doesn't exactly ring false. The Hospitaliers were also known as the Knights of St John; you'll recognise their emblem (the Maltese Cross) today on ambulances almost the whole world over; it's where the word "Hospital" comes from after all. The Hospitaliers are actually still around today, the Sovereign Military Order of Malta are the present day iteration of the Order.

I thought this was underrated when it came out (though it was definitely in the shadow of LoTR: The Two Towers), but I love the director's cut. It could use another editing pass to smooth out some of the reintegrated material, but it all just adds so much. If I have one significant criticism, it's that Balian needed a stronger actor. Bloom gives it his all, and I love him for it, but imagine this with a Fassbender or a Hardy anchoring it. Still, I agree with the 9.0.

Kingdom of Heaven and The Abyss are two movies completely changed by their director's cuts. The theatrical cuts of both are faster paced, but in pretty much every other way (story, emotional impact, logical structure) the director's cuts are far superior. Heck, in the theatrical cut of Kingdom of Heaven, Balian (Orlando's character) is just suddenly inexplicably a master strategist and siege expert. In the director's cut, you learn that he was a veteran and an engineer who had built and fielded siege weapons in battle before. The story with the child, the sense of the passage of time, the political and military maneuvering; all of it is much more detailed and present. The theatrical is a fun, but somewhat choppy and uneven, adventure film. The director's cut is a near masterpiece of historical dramatization. The Abyss similarly adds a huge sub(pardon the pun)plot and changes the level of threat that everyone is under. Some of those changes will have a little less impact for those that did not grow up during the Cold War and thus won't feel the immediacy of some of the danger as much, but the changes still make a huge impact to the amount of stress the characters are under and the importance of some of their actions. It really is almost an entirely different movie because of this. There are three other films where the director's cut doesn't really significantly change the story, but massively improves the flow of the film and the impact of the story that was there. Those would be Aliens, Dark City, and Blade Runner. In the Aliens DC, the bit at the beginning with the colony isn't super necessary, but the moment were Ripley learns the fate of her daughter is exceedingly emotionally important to the story. And the sentry gun sequence adds huge tension to the middle of the film. With Blade Runner, there are a bunch of different cuts that are technically director's cuts. They have all had different names applied, but they differ only slightly from one another. The main improvement across all of them is the removal of the studio mandated voice over narration. That alone makes any of the later cuts better than the theatrical. There are a ton of other subtle (and not so subtle) changes. The only thing that gets substantially altered is the potential nature of one of the main characters. But even this is still hinted at, rather than outright spoken. In Dark City's case, the director's cut eliminates the horrendous opening narration that basically spoils the entire plot before you even get to watch the movie, and the restored and re-edited footage makes the initial detective story make so much more sense. While not a ton is added or removed, every change makes the film flow so much better. It is an interesting example because on the surface they seem very similar. But the director's cut is ultimately far superior in pretty much every way.

@Matthew Goeth Thanks. It may also depend on the theatrical vs directors cut in terms of the debate, is he isn’t he an angel. In theatrical, I believe, you don’t have that scene where the Hospitaler mysteriously disappears on Balian after the burning bush discussion, giving the impression that the Hospitaler is otherworldly. Also, I don’t think the theatrical version had the Hospitaler discover the badly wounded Balian, after Guy’s assassin fails to kill him, and does one of those Obi Wan Kenobi healing touches on Balian. It never entered my mind that the Hospitaler was anything but a enlightened religious knight in the original release. I think Ridley Scott intentionally made the nature of the Hospitaler more ambiguous, otherworldly in the Director’s Cut. That said, you are right, he’s clearly seen dead after the battle of Battle (or massacre) of Hattin.

A friend of mine wanted to see it but refused to commit to the long version so I revisited the theatrical with her and found it severely incomplete after being used to the director's cut. My friend didn't get why Eva Green was in the movie when she watched the theatrical with me and was kind of blown away when I told her what was missing. But she didn't like the theatrical enough to bother with the director's cut, so there ya go. Not her kind of thing, probably.

This version is better than the theater cut, by far, though it does create pacing issues, as Shaun noted. If you like Gladiator, the director cut of that is better, too. There are extra political scenes that help the plot, though it does slow the film a bit.

My favorite ridley Scott film of all time is Kingdom of Heaven, this one. It's actually my favorite film of all time. It's atmosphere and unbiased approach is amazing. The gregorian chant and the authentic mideval soundtrack is beautiful.

It would have been good if yoy included your reaction to Saladins scene in Jerusalem. Arguably one of the best scenes in the entire movie and cinema history. When he picked up a fallen cross and put it on the table, did not step on a cross carving in the floor, and his soldiers bathed the city in rose water instead of blood.

Was that piece of music written for "Hannibal" or was it just used in "Hannibal"? I've never been sure although Wikipedia seems to imply that it was written for "Hannibal." I always wondered if that was a preexisting piece Ridley liked and appropriated for the movie, which he does all the time, or if Patrick Cassidy wrote it especially for "Hannibal" - which would be a bit odd, considering Hans Zimmer's the main guy credited for the score on that but stranger things have happened with music on Ridley Scott films. It could be a piece that Cassidy and Zimmer gave a significant overhaul to make it sound like it does in "Hannibal" and in "Kingdom of Heaven." Hopefully someone will chime in who knows stuff.

Big fan of this film too, I think it's very much underrated. I even have some props from it, including a tunic from one of the Teutonic Knights that ambush Balian at the well, a Muslim banner and a couple of shields from Saladin's army and one of the giant spears used to bring down Saladin's siege towers at the walls of Jerusalem. And aside from that, EVA GREEN is in it!

Though the action was good, It isn't one of the films I'm particularly fond of due to its inaccurate (and offensive) portrayals of historical individuals in the film along with its undertones of racism in its portrayals of the Zulu etc. The South African population was still in apartheid at the time Zulu was made, and they were actually banned from watching it.

Though you are correct that the film was ahead of its time in actually giving the Zulu and other African cultures screen time, it portrayed them going in as "hordes" while also Trivializing their cultural practices and traditions. Also, actual historical Zulu tactics were quite sophisticated. Portrayals of the Zulu as "Hordes" in the film didn't give them justice. I appreciate your input. Thanks.

@@HistoritorJimaldus I like "Zulu" a lot, with the caveat that black people didn't get speaking roles in British epic films when it was made. I've shown it to people who objected to the incongruous lack of bloodshed during all the battle scenes with all those thousands of Zulu warriors getting mowed down which was, again, a product of the time the film was made. My only serious issue with it is that one vertical crane shot that goes horribly wobbly just at the height of the camera move. It's in one of those otherwise amazingly conceived and filmed build-ups to the big action scenes and it all works like gangbusters until this one drunken camera move buggers it up. No idea why they didn't shoot another one or lose it in editing. Weird.

As a person who does medieval living history, this is one of my favorite films of all time because of the care they put into getting details right. There are countless little things they took the time to put in and get right. I saw the theatrical version in the theater in full armor after giving a fighting demonstration in front of the theater, but felt it had a lot of gaps. The Directors cut answered all the questions I had. Often while packing to go to a living history event I will put on the director's cut of this, and then immediately follow it with Ridley Scott's Robin Hood, as Kingdom of Heaven ends with Richard the Lionheart going on Crusade and Robin Hood starts with Richard coming home from Crusade. FTR I totally agree with Tom, but totally get Shaun's perspective

The "Kingdom of Heaven" Director's Cut is easily one of my Top 100 (maybe top 50) films, but "Gladiator" is my all time favorite. And I'm with ya Tom, Ridley Scott is the man, plain and simple. Gladiator, KOH, American Gangster, Black Hawk Down, Blade Runner, Alien, Body of Lies and even (I love the film and will defend it to the death) Robin Hood with Russell Crowe. The Director's Cut (per usual with Ridley Scott) helps that film substantially.

For me, more than any other film, this Director’s cut improves on the original in a more signify that way. I would agree with the 9 rating whereas I would only give the theatrical version a 5 at most. Gladiator, for me, is the only film that has an inferior Directors Cut compared to the shorter theatrical version. If you get round to watching Troy I I would recommend go with the extended directors cut too.

My first hero in the fifties was king arthur and I loved everything having to do with knights and maidens and crusades and chivalry (long before being familiar with reality). I used to ride my bike to the library and skim through collections of the fantastic/famous/classical paintings that were based on those tales. Along with everything else excellent about this film (especially the extended version where you actually find out why a blacksmith knows how to defend against a siege) this is the first time I felt like I was looking at the great paintings (that shot of knights on the battlements overlooking the port was the exquisite high point for me). This film satisfied a cinematic desire I had had for over fifty years. (Wouldn't you love to see a prequel with 'further adventures' of godfrey and his crusaders?)

I hate to break it to you, but the brightest and best Christians were not always the ones that went crusading. A lot of them were scary psychotic monsters who were really good at killing people and couldn't get away with that kind of barbaric behavior back home. I mean, the nobility could get away with a lot back then but some of those guys were really beyond the pale.

I feel like the term 'pacing' came up to be a major issue in reviews (for films, songs, even books) during the last decade more or less. And that is a bit sad for me cause people seem to be eager to finish something and go to the next thing to do instead of just laying back and enjoying it. I see where it's coming from, I just don't agree with it. If I have a great meal served to me, I'll enjoy every piece of it no matter how long it'll take to eat it. And I personally think that this movie is an excellent feast for eyes, ears and mind. I could have watched another hour or two of it with ease. But that's all about tastes I guess. If you love something, I believe you can watch it for hours without complaining (like the LOTR movies for example). Great review again guys! I wrote about this film for my master's thesis (on Hollywood's historical portrayal of Arabs/Muslims and how that was changed by 9/11), and fell in love with the director's cut. I think it's the most-improved director's cut I've ever seen (Blade Runner's director's cut is better, but that movie was better overall to begin with). I'll agree with other commenters that it probably could have been a little tighter for pacing, but I maintain that everything with Sibylla's son should have NEVER come out of the movie to begin with. Removing him removes the entire foundation for her actions in the second half of the film.

25:40 actually medieval people new about infections and ways to make it less likely. they didn't know germ theory but they still knew certain things were more likely to kill and others less likely to kill. they would use clean material if they could, and would often put honey (which does have anti-bacterial qualities) in wounds.

I've seen both versions. I kinda like the theatrical version better, but the Directors cut added a lot of interesting detail that changed some things. Either way, a powerful movie. The German 'close student of the law' is one of my favourites. I watched it again when my dad passed away; the whole 'do the right thing' aspect of it. I watched matchstick Men on DVD and Ridley references this movie in the bonus features. something about a big movie in the desert and he had time for matchstickmen while he was waiting. As a single father that movie hit me as well.

I love the director's cut, but I still think Guy de Lusignan didn't have to be the baddie. Historically, Sybillia picked him to be her husband because they loved each other, not for any military or strategic reasons. In many ways, he was actually a poor pick, since there were nobles who would've had more to offer her and Jerusalem in men or martial skill. I wish it were possible for him to have been less of a villian, because he was less "evil" and more of a tragic figure in history, whose horrible choices in a single battle led to his kingdom's inevitable destruction. Raynald of Châtillon, however, was a horrible person, who was portrayed very fairly in the movie. He really was like that.

The theatrical cut did the Sibylia character a huge disservice, making her an utter basket case after her brother dies. The director's cut shows everything she goes through: losing her true love, her brother's death, marrying a man she loathes for the sake of her son, who she was the forced to euthanize after finding out he had leprosy. It made much more sense why she became such a wreck.

I really enjoyed the director cut of this. It is definitely a slow burner but I felt well worth it. I've always been fascinated by the Crusades. I somewhat wish it was a film on the Third Crusade but this is a great story too. Though I do wish they would have explained more how Bailean learned to communicate with other Crusaders (he was French most others were not, other than the Templars...as was Richard Lionheart who historians believe never spoke English. He also didnt know Latin. It wasn't broadly learned beyond the Catholic Mass prayers)

I had no problem assuming he trained himself up over the long journey to the Holy Land. There would not have been much else to do while traveling. As a blacksmith, Bloom's character would have been uncommonly fit to begin with, which would have helped. I wonder if a bunch of sword training stuff was shot but not used, since so much of the message of the movie would have played against loads of scenes of him learning to kill people awesomely with a sword?

That would have made it much more believable, and would have only added maybe 5 to 10 minutes to the film. Also the fact that he doesn't really get any battle wounds the entire movie bothers me too. He should have been wounded a time or two.

@@isaacgarcia771 Well sure, but stacking ten minutes of sword fight training up front would have led to audience expectations of lots of sword fighting later on, which Ridley and Co. might not have wanted to do. I don’t deny that training montages are awesome, but it looks like that wasn’t the movie they wanted to make, rightly or wrongly. Assuming you don’t just hate Orlando Bloom in general and want horrible things to happen to him on screen 😜 all I can say about him not getting wounded is that a half an hour of screen time devoted to him in pain, healing and learning to walk or wield his sword again or whatever would not have helped the pace. Another notion - I was watching “Wyatt Earp” (the Kevin Costner one) with my Dad once and during the bit at the end when Wyatt’s in the middle of the river with bullets flying everywhere and we get narration saying he never got scratched by a bullet in umpty-leven years as a lawman in the West I asked Dad what he thought of that. He’d been in Korea and Vietnam and seen a lot of shit and he said he couldn’t explain why but there would occasionally be the odd guy who never got a scratch no matter what he did or what was going on around him. It made no sense and it wasn’t fair, and don’t ask him to explain it, but it did seem to be a thing. There’s a line about Kilgore in “Apocalypse Now” that expresses something similar, so it seems to be part of the folklore, or “war legends” or whatever you’d call it. Anyway, Orlando in this could be one of those guys. ☺️

The only thing that this movie did right was the costumes, and the armor. Every historical figure in this movie is portrayed very poorly, one of the historical advisors for this movie demanded he have his name taken out of the credits before it went to theaters. Not because the theatrical cut was bad, because the premise of the film was wrong in every way. This movie had a very modern sensibility to it, Balian's speech at the end "All have claim"... you might agree with that statement but I assure you that a 12th-century knight would not agree. i also greatly disliked how they portrayed Saladin. Saladin was not a kind man, was ambitious and he conquered and enslaved a lot of people.
