The original drawing of "SS5 Goku" was actually an OC called Tablos, and it was submitted in an old issue of a Spanish gaming magazine called Hobby Consolas. The original artist still does art til this day, and even did one where Tablos went up against SSB Goku.

As an ex-AF creator (Blazejecar), it would be interesting to note that sprite animations were a huge part of the AF world. People creating the story themselves with a medium that needed a bit less effort and not as good of a pc as actual animation. And the fun part is, we were one of the first people to bring sprite animation from newgrounds to youtube (in my case, I was 13 and simply didnt know newgrounds existed so I just uploaded on youtube) and after mine and some others' sprite series made it into mainstream fandom, tons of people started doing sprite animations and it ended up being a huge factor to why sprite animation is so widely used now (by screwattack and the like). Without AF it's possible sprite animation would've remained a dying niche on newgrounds, because back then super mario bros Z was the only thing keeping it kinda alive and even that was ending at the time

In hindsight, AF kinda became a reality thanks to Super Dragon Ball Heroes. There might not be a Xicor, but we got a super saiyan form with red as well as blue hair, Baby possessed villains, Towa is effectively a demon version of Xicor's mom complete with Fu (or even just Mira) having some of Goku's dna, SSJ4 Broly, even a super saiyan (3) Raditz.

Fun fact: Toyble wasn't a company, it was one guy who was particularly talented at drawing Dragon Ball. He later actually ended up studying under Toriyama himself and changed his username/pen name to Toyotarou. He's now the guy who draws and is in charge of the Dragon Ball Super manga. So the fan artist who made Dragon Ball AF a reality (even if it was never finished) is now one of the most important people working on the real IP. It's a nice success story.

I have a copy of modded DBZ Budokai 3 called Budokai AF from 2006 i think. Absolutely in love with it, has a bunch of re-skins which look okay, story is set 200 years after the events of GT and it has a interesting storyline. It's quite well incorporated into the existing story. There are tuffles coming to Earth, then the Hell saga where you get to fight Nappa which can go SSJ4, after that is the Zeel saga and in the end you have the Evil Goku saga. For all the people who followed all the AF shit back in the 00s/early 10s you know what I'm talking about. I just wanted to play Budokai 3, found it on Pirat Bay and surprise surprise got an absolute gem hahaha.

Most who talk AF only cover the Toyable (Toyataru) and fake ads side of this topic because Toyable eventually became a creator for Dragon Ball and Toei ran with AF being a joke. But (in my opinion) AF has always been about the fans and what they wanted out of Dragon Ball. The story of AF is up to which one the fan wants to be canon, and if you’re not satisfied with any, you can create your own story for the series! This is what I think AF truly means to fans as a whole.

With regard to where the rumor of the original Dragon Ball AF came from, the image of "Super Saiyan 5 Goku" appeared as a fan work by David Montiel Franco in the Spanish magazine Hobby Consolas. Derek Padula learned in an interview with Franco that the character was, in fact, never Goku, but his own character Tablos, who lives in a future timeline in which Goku has already died. I learned by interviewing Franco that the form Tablos used was not Super Saiyan 5, but a unique transformation known as Spirit Killer. Hope that information helps fill in some holes in how AF originally came to be! (Also, in Franco's original work, AF was an abbreviation for Alternate Future.)

Fun fact: Toyotaro aka Toyble was the one who proposed the idea of a new transformation after Akira Toriyama brought SSG into the mix. Before being hired by Toei, Toyotaro as Toyble was writing and drawing his own line of DBAF fan manga. Which is a direct continuation of DBGT, Goku had attained a new form in the Dragon Realm. A new form that dwarfed Full Power SSJ4 and even surpasses SSJ4 Gogeta by leagues above. However in order to attain SSJ5 one has to completely empty himself and have full control of their emotions otherwise the power of SSJ5 would literally crush and explode the wielder of such tremendous power which coincidently mirrors Ultra Instinct. Fun fact: Toyotaro aka Toyble ran with the whole mantra of SSJ5 because of that infamous SSJ5 fan art by David Montiel Franco, who came out years later to say that's not Goku. His name is Tablos, a random unknown saiyan who miraculously survived the destruction of planet Vegeta. Who vigorously trained to attain a power that would surpass all known gods without God Ki. 🤔 Hmmm sounds like the archetype to Jiren as well, a being that's stronger than his God of Destruction Belmont. So yeah, absolute legend Toyotaro and David Montiel Franco. Edit: So yeah. The fandom had a God form before it was even a thing and in the mind of Akira Toriyama. Edit: So in essence Toyotaro and Akira Toriyama took notes from DBGT and DBAF and adapted to DBS. Especially the UI White Angelic hair, because SSJ5 is white greyish shiny hair. Edit: Toyotaro is the one who drew and brought into existence the Gods of Destruction. For example Lord Lood served as the inspiration for the God of Destruction Mosco. Funny enough Lord Lood is referred as a God of Destruction. Edit: Let's not forget and give Young Jiji's a shout out for his incredible works of art and expanding the lore of DBAF content. Edit: Now we have Mondo Cool, Unrealentgaming and CALLMEARJ and countless others writing and drawing new DBAF fan manga, DBS fan manga and alternate time-line fan manga. Absolutely breathtaking 😍. I first watches dragon ball z in the late 90's in Mexico. My older cousin used to watch it all the time so I would too. When I got older in the mid 2000's I rediscovered it, I remember watching GT after I finished Z. Then I I wanted more and would constantly search pictures of ssj5 and 6 and so on. I was obsessed with it, AF was something that eluded me but I constantly saw pictures on Google and anywhere else I found. Dragon Ball really got me into Anime when at the time it wasn't cool to watch it. NARUTO and Bleach were my havens back then.

What's funny about this the rumours were alive in 2009 when I was in middle school. One of my classmates said AF is false and the new dragon ball will be dbs, s for super and it's about Goku reaching godhood and merging it with super saiyan for more power. One thing to note is just how murky the actual continuity of Dragon Ball was in the early 2000s. The internet wasn't what it was today, the only official DBZ website at the time just had a few bios for characters up to the Cell saga, and there wasn't really a single message board that was where most of the fans congregated. GT wasn't mentioned by official sources in the US, so we were all just going off of screencaps and promotional material. The most high profile thing I remember was a magazine called Beckett DBZ collector, an unofficial magazine that had articles, fan art, community news, posters, some truly heinous covers made in a blocky 3D style, and in the spring time, April Fool's pranks. If you got ahold of the issue that "confirmed" Dragonball AF without reading the editor's notes, AF was just as real as GT, or even the Buu saga, in our eyes. It's difficult to describe just how powerful those middle school rumors were before you could fact check everything you heard as soon as you got home. Pictures of Sonic in Super Smash Bros Melee, Super Saiyan 5 Goku, and Pokemon vs. YuGiOh had a vice grip on us kids.

Dragon ball af was super unknown to me and I've never heard of it untill I watched this video and my opinion on it is that I think it's awsome the concepts were very awsome the fact that it was made by the fans shocked me cuz it really does feel like a continuation of gt but I personally loved ssj5 It's basicly like a what if scenario where goku didint lose his tail but super saiyen 5 while not having much fans it's become one of my favorite forms and I loved the fusions aswell so much was unique about this story whole trying to stay true to the original we all know and love I'm still shocked that the fans can make something this unique but even tho we will never see super saiyen 5 in official dragon ball media I gotta admit it was an amazing form at the time

I remember back from primary school, a classmate told us one of his friends bought the "Dragon Ball AF Movie" and it was just a slideshow of images made in Windows Movie Maker, which makes a lot of sense since we are from Latin America and bootleg DVDs were pretty much the norm here.
