As a Scot, I do very much appreciate the concept of ‘Englishness’ and love what I see. See here anyway. So many so called English patriots could do worse than listen to this. Dancing out is one of many Gabriel era songs that wrestle with what it means to be English. Be they the bucolic or the confrontational, Gabriel’s lyrics are on point at a time when the English were struggling with their identity. And arguably still are. Sit those a*holes down, give them an edible or two and ask them to reflect. Whilst listening to your amazing reconstruction. Seriously. You have excelled yourselves. I was at the Six of the best gig at Milton Keynes, and so have seen Genesis with Gabriel. Incredible. Although my clothes are not yet dry some 40 years later! Fabulous work. The British Music invasion after the Beatles had just started from such musical legend groups such as Genesis with singer Peter Gabriel then with Phil Collins on drums later Phil taking over as lead singer for Genesis. More musical legends of the British music invasion of America include David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Moody Blues, Led Zepplin, and more. All my favorites of mine say the Good Earth Chef Barry Anderson of Phuket Thailand. I bought all of their albums and enjoyed them all as a young teen with my hippy long hair and bell bottoms. As a young aspiring traditional artist at the time, I would sketch and sometimes paint the lyrics on paper and canvas. Later Walt Disney hired Barry to supervise the show Darkwing Duck and Goof Troop TV series throughout the early 90s and then I continued to enjoy my Genesis music albums to this day now listening on KZbin. Thank You, KZbin.

Just brilliant. Brilliant. Had thought the original was shot on 35mm film - but Arri did 16mm cameras too so am maybe wrong on that? For those interested in the techy stuff, a couple (could have been three - it was a long time ago...) of big Arriflex cameras (very professional looking) on stands were used and from time to time one ran on rails just behind the small audience (the band wanted a real audience to add atmosphere - the cheering is real but probably expanded in some way). The band would play a song live using a couple of cameras angles. Filming would then stop and the camera angles changed. The band would then mime to the live recording they'd just made - pretty much 100% note perfect too every time - played back through the PA and monitors. That gave four camera angles in total. Before each shot, the director would call 'Turn Over' and when the cameras were up to speed 'Action'. A clapperboad was used to sync things (would love to have that!). Filming was originally planned to take one day but progress was slow and a second day was required. To get the crowd, the audience at a Peter Hammill (VDGG singer) concert at Wigmore Hall the evening before was asked at his concert to meet at Victoria Coach station the next day if they wanted to take part in the filming. They would then be transported to Shepperton (and back later!), fed and watered but no money was exchanged on other side. At the end of day one's shooting the audience was invited back the next day but you had to make your own transport arrangements. The end result was one (two?) of the finest concerts I've ever experienced. So day two's audience was a bit smaller. The band was approachable, relaxed and friendly. Look very carefully and you may just see the back of my head (more hair those days...) silhouetted in some of the shots, along with cousin Andre, friend Steve and workmate Harold. Ah memories and ah, what music and a band at the very peak of its form.

Incredible story, and you have a very good memory ! Gerry Harrison told me that the film was shot on 16mm… But maybe he’s wrong?
