Absolutely brilliant idea to leave the print on the glass and infill with resin. You can basically use the print surface as a face, then infill with anything you want... it's essentially an open faced mould.

I use PLA and resin printers to do something similar, but never thought to keep the PLA on the glass bed and pour the resin directly onto it. This will save me SO MUCH time; thanks!

I had a very similar project in mind using a translucent plastic as a diffuser but now that I've seen this, resin is probably a better way to go, are they using a standard resin? epoxy?

This is a masterclass in integrating printing in a commercial process, thank you! Super smart solutions to some tricky problems. I even took notes! Some stuff is obvious but some isn't, so thought I'd paste here what I found interesting, novel or noteworthy enough to put in my notes folder... 🙂 - Plain glass bed, free-resting on top of a glass "hot box" with forced air circulation. 🪟♨ - adhesion layer using PVA and squeegee - Filament run-out sensors use gravity lever that falls onto an IR gate. Mounting blocks freely rotate. - No ABL, probably no need with all linear bearings and heavy gantry, probably manually trammed very rarely. 🔧 - LOTS of z-squish on first layer, probably because good adhesion is much more important than z accuracy and elephant's foot not a problem due to single perimeters and the top edge is gooped over. - Dual (machined alu) extruders, short bowdens, single hot-end: PLA white and (pla?) translucent (ie not clear). ⚙ Assuming PLA because almost no stringing and no enclosures. - Single, fat perimeters. Probably a pretty large nozzle dia (0.8 or bigger?), and maybe ~ 1.2mm line width? - Lays down outer perim of lettering, several layers vertical then tapered walls - middle third of wall height is printed in translucent pla, so you get an outline/dropshadow effect - Clean stringing with torch and tweezers, looks like they clean the inside channels of the bed, but maybe just for dust/filament. Unsure if they're washing the PVA out (suspect not, see later). - After printing, inner channels are filled to a few mm with translucent resin and UV cured. Resin is in translucent "sauce bottles" but stored in light-tight bin. They have multiple colours but seem to be using only translucent white for initial fill on this sign.🖌 - Use water to separate from bed, and wash pva from resin fill. - Colour layer is done with (probably) UV cure resin, applied in a clean room. Run a bead on the transl resin, then use tool to break surface tension so it flows to edge of PLA outline.🖌 - They hit it with quick flame, maybe that sets the surface so it doesn't flow while working the rest of it? Or maybe encourages it to flow and even out the meniscus. 🔥 - Then run LED strip on a laser-cut MDF backing frame, which fits *inside* the PLA frame, which has a shelf edge in it. Strip is spot-secured by CA glue (I think), as is the board-to-pla interface. The sign is about maybe 30mm deep, looks like 60LEDS/m strip. - LED colours are loosely matched to resin colour for primaries, but use white leds on the purple perimeter. - Inludes a strip on the back for ambient drop-shadow(light) on the bottle part of the design. (back board is recessed about 5mm into the pla frame, and also has ~ 25mm bolts as wall stand-offs). - They use SILICON NOZZLES that slip on their CA glue bottles! - When lit it looks like the darker colours have a black border, but it's just the contrast from having the resin flow onto the PLA border. Yeah, so I totally geeked-out on this.

The layer height was quite huge so even if it moved slower it probably is just as fast or faster than a consumer printer in normal operation
@DigBipper188
@DigBipper188 Жыл бұрын
This is true. You won't see one of these machines with a giant nozzle (looks like these are 1mm or greater in orifice diameter) running 600mm/s though!! The material can't handle being extruded that rapidly and it wouldn't have sufficient time to cool down before the next layer's run overtop it which is a recipe for warping and deformation. That's of zero concern though because what these industrial machines REALLY excel at is pumping out insane volumes of filament, generating massive layers and getting massive prints done substantially faster than their desktop counterparts. You might be able to run a 60x60x60mm cube in a couple hours - this thing would have that same cube done in 30 minutes. *if that.*

I love that there is literally nothing fancy going on here. It's just the same old simple printing & UV resin all of us use but at a larger scale. I guess building out the printers in house and also selling them helps with that.
