Thanks, Guy - Robin was always my favorite... he wrote this and sang it when he was 17-18 yrs old.. and still sang it perfectly this many years later.. all those Gibbs bros were amazing, but IMHO Robin was most unique... RIP...

To me this song is about someone who unintentionally says or does something that hurts someone else and how they are dealing with the fallout of their actions. Someone who has failed to "read the room" and says something insulting/harmful and is shunned for their actions. It is the anthem of the chronically misunderstood, someone who always feels out of step with the rest of the world. Its a very human experience that everyone has at one point or another in their life which is why I think this song resonates with so many people. The poignancy of the lyrics combined with the emotional punch of Robin's voice makes this song a timeless classic.

This is one of my favorite songs. Thank you for listening to it. To me, it has always been a question of understanding my value in my eyes, and from the perspective of others. I have always known, even though this song came out when I was young, people didn’t really see me. It’s taken me a long time to actually value and see myself for who I am. I don’t worry about what other people see anymore.

Released in 1968, pre-Disco era, "I Started A Joke" was one of my favorite songs 'back in the day.' Robin had such a unique, beautiful voice; you never needed to actually see him singing the lead in a Bee Gees song, you knew right away when it was Robin. R.I.P. Robin.

Robin sang the lead in a lot of their earlier works. Massachusetts is another outstanding song that Robin sang lead on. They played I Started a Joke at Robin’s funeral.

"When you've got it you've got it". Unquestionably! Robin admitted he was a loner and often felt misunderstood. He wrote this @18 years old. The original video shows him walking through a bunch of fun house mirrors and weird misshaped human cutouts. Do we and others see us as we are or distorted like in a fun house mirror? This song meant a lot to him and he had it played at his funeral. I love your interpretation.

I recorded this on my VCR back in '97. Still have it. It's the best 'older' Bee Gee concert. Barry has lost a little of his high voice, but not much. You should watch the whole thing. Look for the 'One Night Only' concert. Love this one!

I think "One for all" Melbourne 1989 is much better and more diverse and lively. They were in their prime in that one while "One night only" was flat for me and had too much "disco".

We need to remain grounded in who we are, and understand that everyone has their own journey in life. Especially in this world where the societal agenda is to dictate what perfection looks like.
