It is a statement song. Robin was more of a tumultuous person. Barry said he could be the happiest and funniest to the saddest soul out there. Barry reassured him often and even as Robin was passing, that they had made the dream come true and he could stop worrying. Theirs is such an amazing story of conflict mixed with true brotherly love. This song never fails to make me cry, Robin's voice with that beautiful vibrato adds so much emotion and vulnerability. Robin actually had the highest voice of the group, Maurice the lowest and Barry fell into the middle range, They could all sing in falsetto but Barry's is just legendary. As much as I miss Maurice and Robin,'s talent (and Andy's) I can only imagine how painful the loss is for Barry.

Amazing performance by Robin! They all were so talented, each with their own strengths. Combined, it led to magic. I believe it was Maurice that once said something like: one of us is great, two of us are amazing, and the three of us are magic. Well, in my opinion, he was right. I'm so happy to see people discovering the Bee Gees once again. And also that people learn more about Robin and Maurice. Most people get to know the Bee Gees from their Saturday night fever period, and that mostly revolves around Barry. So it is so nice to someone like yourself discovering more about this amazing band and that Robin and Maurice were incredibly talented.

Robin sang this song at every concert performance since it was released. It held deep meaning for him and he has said it was a very spiritual song for him. He had requested it as one of the songs to be played at his funeral. Robin , there was never anyone like him! Mo said that he has the voice that touches your heart! Because of his soulful sound back in the day,May thought he was a black singer. He was very funny, ( they all were), but Robin had a special whit! He was extremely intelligent and very spiritual. He was an introvert where Mo and Barry were more extroverts. There is a video where he is doing the national song of the Isle of Man ( where they were born) with the kings choir that is so fantastic. There are others…oh, since it is the season, Robin did an entire Christmas album solo, it is great as well! You should hear him sing Christmas songs! Some are out on KZbin!

Robin sings with vibrato, barry with tremolo (you call it harmonica). Vibrato is the periodic variation of the pitch (frequency) of a musical note and tremolo is defined as a rapid repetition of the same note to produce the audible effect of a longer note,

He had a beautiful soulful and vulnerable voice. In 1967 Robin and his then fiancee were in a fatal train derailment where over 40 people died at the scene and I believe others of their injuries later. He helped as many people as he could before the emergency services got there. He and his fiancee were sent to hospital but discharged. He never forgot what he saw and heard and Barry said, 'from that point on pathos entered his songwriting and he took to singing sad songs'.

Robin's voice is so pure. What makes this song so much sadder are the words and the fact that Robin has left us.. and also Maurice and Andy. When Robin was dying, Barry said they sang to him and he said: "I wish Mo was here". I believe that they are together again w/Andy. Maurice aka Mo does a good solo with "Man in the Middle" and "Closer than Close". Andy's "Love is Thicker than Water" is gr8. And if you want to hear the more recent Bee Gees "Alone" was done by the BGs in 1997, "One" and "You Win Again" was done in 1989. 😎

Robin's beautiful voice singing this interesting and sad song was on one of the first LP records I bought when a teenager. Robin was in the limelight a lot until Barry discovered his falsetto voice and took over the high-part singing. This detracted from the group in my opinion. Barry's voice was fabulous as it was initially and should have remained that way.
@susieq9801 Жыл бұрын
@barnowl - Totally agree. It was overused and I did not like it when in later concerts he inserted it into their older songs where it was never intended to be. IMO, that spoiled those songs. The falsetto also eventually took a toll on Barry's voice. It lumped them in with disco music and when disco took off there were a lot of REALLY tacky money making offshoots (like disco duck 😠😠) that turned a lot of people against both disco and by default the Bee Gees and almost destroyed them. You sound like we must be about the same age. Robin's voice was the reason I bought their first LP in the 60's.
@barnowl5774 Жыл бұрын
@@susieq9801 Yes, I'm in my 70s. Barry's 'take-over' may have also been the reason Robin left the group for a while? Apparently he was deeply hurt about something. On YT the young blacks in the USA seem to love Barry's falsetto voice.
@susieq9801 Жыл бұрын
@@barnowl5774 - Yes, I was born the exact same day/year as the twins, #73 coming up in a couple of weeks. I am accepting gifts. 😁 EXPENSIVE ones. There was a lot behind Robin leaving. Actually Barry threatened to leave first for his "movie" career. He said he wanted "To be a star. A star is where you walk into the room anywhere in the world and people take notice". Some of his youthful humility, LOL. Often only one or two would show up to record. They were young and people were pulling them apart. The press also was very cruel to Robin who said "I'm ugly but have a characterful face". They called him a gopher. That had to hurt. The press printed lies from each brother about the others and the guys were naive and believed them. The press raved about Barry when Robin was cowriting the songs and actually sang lead on most of their biggest early hits. Their dad Hugh didn't even want Robin to sing leads. In addition, Stigwood favored Barry and often chose Barry's songs as "A" sides relegating Robin's vocals to "B" sides. "The singer sang his song" was "B" and "Jumbo", a flop, was an "A" side. "I can't see nobody" was a "B" side. "I started a Joke" was never even released as a single in the UK at all! Robin was also suffering from PTSD after the Hither Green train wreck but back then nobody recognized such a thing. The final straws were when Stigwood released "First of May" as an "A" over "Lamplight" when he promised it would be an "A" and he refused to release "Odessa" as a single. First fame gave them so much stress that Robin said he felt he was in a whirlpool and had to leave for his mental health. It wasn't a simple story. I think a lot of reactors don't get to hear Robin. Can't like what you don't hear. Same with Mo. All they know is the disco because it got the most attention. The falsetto wasn't even an issue until '75 and the split was in '69.
