I'm surprised there is no mention of Eustace III of Boulogne, the older brother of Godfrey of Bouillon and Baldwin of Boulogne, the first two rulers of Jerusalem. Eustace was a trusted and capable major noble during the First Crusade, leading his own retinue and being present at Nicaea, Dorylaeum, Antioch, and Jerusalem. At the battle of Ascalon he commanded a division of the crusader army, after which he returned home to the County of Boulogne to administer his domains. At home Eustace enjoyed the fame and renown as a courageous crusader, having stormed the walls of Jerusalem alongside his brother Godfrey. To commemorate Eustace's crusading adventures, the mint at Boulogne struck silver coins with a lion above the walls of Jerusalem stamped on the obverse. Eustace outlived both his brothers, after which he was offered the kingdom of Jerusalem in 1118 as he was the closest male relative to his brother Baldwin I of Jerusalem. He traveled all the way to the south of Italy before learning that a distant relative, Baldwin of Bourcq, had been crowned in the meantime. Eustace retired to a Cluniac monastery, dying in 1125.

It seems some people are salty until today. I think The Crusades were a extraordinary event, a very poor equiped, small and desorganized army marched on foot through hostile lands, reaching the Levant and won some battles and conquered cities.
@remilenoir1271 Жыл бұрын
@Historian25 Yes, the crusaders had better armament. But better armament doesn't equate to better equipment, and as far as we can see, the crusaders armies were extremely ill-prepared for Middle Eastern warfare and their logistical discrepancies proved hugely detrimental and eventually fatal in the later crusades, against united muslim opponents who were familiar with the region. Besides, being a lord and, especially, a knight in the medieval era didn't mean you were rich. Owning land isn't automatically akin to owning pecuniary riches, and your consideration glosses over the well known fact that many crusaders ruined themselves in order to get to the Holy Land in the first place.
@andreaswidham3607 Жыл бұрын
15:45 The thing to remember is that at this point, the idea of what a "Crusade" was, had not yet fully formed. In many ways it was the seemingly divinely ordained success of the First Crusade that created the concept of what we now call a "Crusade."
