Kings and Generals animated historical documentary series on the First Crusade continues with the aftermath of the battle of Civetot of 1096 ( • People's Crusade: Batt... ) during the so-called People's Crusade of the First Crusade and the battle of Nicaea of 1097 ( • Princes' Crusade Begin... ) as the Princes' Crusade began. The Crusaders continued moving into the Asia Minor and had to fight against the forces of the Seljuk Sultan of Rum Kilij Arslan in Dorylaeum ( • Battle of Dorylaeum 10... ) and after the victory over the sultan, the road to Syria was open, leading to the Siege of Antioch in 1097-1098 ( • Siege of Antioch 1097-... ), but the partial victory of the crusaders in this siege was followed by a counter-attack of various Seljuk generals, leading to the biggest battle of the First Crusade - the battle of Antioch ( • Biggest Battle of the ... ). In the aftermath of the battle, the crusade almost collapsed, as the infighting between the princes became too difficult to resolve leading to a Civil War like situation ( • Civil War of the First... ). Despite this situation, Crusaders managed to retain some of their unity and continued deeper into Syria, where they fought at Ma'arra. Unfortunately, that was the battle that turned them into cannibals ( • Battle that Turned Cru... ). The issues persists, but the majority of the remaining Crusader army finally reached Jerusalem and besieged it ( • Siege of Jerusalem 109... ). In the aftermath of taking Jerusalem, Crusaders needed to secure the city against the Fatimid counter-offensive, which led to the last battle of the First Crusade - the battle of Ascalon ( • Last Battle of the Fir... ). It was followed by the Crusade many consider to be the worst - the Crusade of 1101

They didn't have the element of unprecedented surprise the first Crusaders did. By this time the precedent had been set, and Kilij knew what was at stake.

At the same time these crusaders had essentially nearly the same lacking knowledge that the first crusade had when talking about their oppenents and the terrain/route. If they had known better, they'd have prepared more supplies, or even better taken the southern Anatolian coastal route, longer but more easily supplied and safe and once linked up with the crusaders states, they could have executed more thought out and well prepared expeditions. Truly could have changed a lot if these groups (+-40k troops) would have linked up with the crusader states, potentially allowing the crusaders states to exist for a lot longer and bigger.

huge respect to great sultan and soldier Kilij Arslan i. he was always against great odds his entire life. captive at Meliksah's palace at Isfahan until 13 years old, he was only 18 when first crusaders arrived. In a region where he was a stranger and with very little amount of Turkmens at Anatolia at the time, he defeated big crusader armies at a very young age. Both European and Muslim chroniclers state that crusaders had bigger armies in 1101 crusade than that of 1097.

Nice overview. I appreciated that this synthesis did not fall into the usual trap about the "feeble" Lombards. Impulsive? Certainly. Strategically illiterate? Looks like it. But it still was a large, mostly infantry contingent that managed to travel thousands of kms into alien lands and ended up resisting for 3-4 days under enemy archers' volleys before being crushed. This said, the amount of persistent, repeated mistakes crusaders made, wave after wave, beggars belief. Kilij Arslan was an impressive leader, no doubt.

Your claim makes absolutely no sense... It wasn't given a "number" because it is considered part of the first crusade, and was comprised of three different expeditions whose aim was to secure the successes of the first crusade, hence their name in modern historiography : "the Succouring Crusades". Subsequent crusades didn't go that well either (though a couple were successful), yet they were also given numbers. What are "westoids" by the way ? The West is a cardinal point, anyone could be a "westoid" relative to anyone else. Maybe you meant to say "European".

Video explains westerner historians traditionally mark the end of first crusade with the battle of Ascalon. So the traditional view is this crusade was something seperate. Imad al-Din Zengi was born in 1085, his father Aq Sunqur al-Hajib died in 1094, so Ida of Formbach-Ratelnberg, in the Crusade of 1101, being Zengi's mother is chronologically impossible. It's more likely that she, along with most of the army, was killed in the battle, as that was what was reported by Ekkehard of Aura, who actually met survivors of the Crusade of 1101.

Mighty Kılıç Arslan a Warrior, a general, a Sultan. He is extremally underrated. Turks entered Anatolia literally 30 years before the events of this video. They didn't have enough population, they didn't have enough horses because of constant warfare (step warfare requires horse switches because of all that feigned retreats and circlements) and they had been beefing with pretty much all their neighbors. Even in all that chaos how many crusader armies didn't reach levant because of his skill as a general? How much time did he buy for Muslim counteroffensive? We are really proud of him in Türkiye.

Kılıçarslan had a very hard life. He lost his father when he was a child and became a prisoner for so long. He managed to escape only to find himself ruling a barely existing Sultanate and fight the heavily armored murderers with extreme numbers. He was still a very young man doing all these stuff. Even though what he suffered through he kept fighting against the enemies from all sides. He is the man who saved the entire muslim world. Türkiye exists thanks to him.

Furthermore, Zengi was likely born before 1101- he would have been around 14 years old by 1101. However, anything is possible as the Sultanate of Rum did not leave good records. Everything we have is from Europeans and their fantasies.
