Dan 240Z There have been dozens and dozens of incidents along the border aside from that. NK soldiers would point their weapons into the south side, eventually being shot and then their friends would use the rope they had tied around themselves to haul the body back. Common in the 60s 70s. Then there was that time there was an axe fight over a tree. When I was stationed there it was not uncommon for there to be a national search alert for NK commandos who had used a mini sub or speedboat to come across into the south on a sabotage mission. Also not uncommon for there to be assassination attempts, a random bombing, etc. Under the current Dear Leader things have actually calmed down a bit.

Most of Chinese casualties were cause by weather and poor logistical support. They couldn’t even cook their food due to US air domination. When 38th Corp arrived Korea, they only had summer uniforms with them, some of it’s units were in ambush positions in mountains with temperatures close to -40 ℃。 They lost almost 50% force before battle started due to frostbites.

9:24 MacArthur wouldn't have been removed if there was mere "disagreement". Rather, MacArthur took concrete actions to subterfuge presidential authority over foreign affair. The spark of his dismissal was when he went beyond directing military operations towards his own strategic goals and instead held press conference contradicting Truman's direct order and Truman's strategy. The mere word of "disagreement" just doesn't do justice in describing the situation. In the grand scheme of things, the argument over nukes was a sideshow in that MacArthur's dismissal. The position of Truman administration towards the use of nuclear weapon was that it was always a possibility. And of course that's their position. That's doing the basics of nuclear extortion. Meanwhile, the use of nukes wasn't in any concrete plan of MacArthur.
@LuvBorderCollies

Mac skated on thin ice far longer than he should've been allowed to. In repelling the NK attack past the 38th parallel he'd crossed the line. Only his "hero" status and the seemingly successful drive to the Yalu kept him in his position. When his highness caused the disaster at Chosin I think Truman was looking for a way to spank him hard and Mac handed Truman the whip with his own mouth.
@ecpgieicg

@@LuvBorderCollies I think Truman admin's records which includes conversation among Truman and aides as well as minutes from meetings are digitized and available on the internet. (Though I may have read the following elsewhere.) When conversing about dismissing MacArthur before the deed in private, Truman did think of it as a big deal. He knew people would really scrutinize the decision. One of the things he said was that incompetence and stupidity was not going to be the reason MacArthur should be dismissed (and instead overstepping chain of command was the reason and in that MacArthur had no excuse.) Well, if Truman wasn't a little bitter about MacArthur's unwarranted insistence that China wouldn't intervene, he probably wouldn't have made such comments. Meanwhile, MacArthur's exploiting his hero status and overstepping chain of command was nothing new. When he handled the occupation of Japan and the making of its constitution, it was done largely by his own direction. Merit of specific actions aside. The Department of War had headed by Eisenhower had to give 'authorization' to MacArthur after the fact over the whole thing. Of course, the earlier and the better known story was from Hoover administration when MacArthur violated expressed written order to not shoot at veteran protesters during the economic crisis.

@@ecpgieicg Thanks for the excellent reply. Common sense told me Truman needed to be careful of public opinion in his handling of Mac. At the time it wasn't well known that Mac had dismissed repeated warnings of the Chinese buildup because he knew better. In fact, it wasn't until the late 80's that Army intel staffers started talking to film makers about the truth of Chosin and Bugout's blunders. This is my own opinion based on my dad's experience and an uncle, but down to the pfc's everyone knew Mac was bad news and caused thousands of needless deaths, they just didn't know the details of how it all came about til decades later. That's why morale was so rock bottom. My dad wasn't at Chosin but rushed there in early '53 as a replacement for all the casualties in the 7th Inf Div. The uncle was USMC in the "central sector" and seriously wounded in Oct 52. I'm looking for a hardcover book published by the RoK about the war. Its got a photo of my dad overlooking a POW return and he's got a 3.5" bazooka with him. The rabid leftists in the city library removed all these types of books (included hunting & guns)so I lost access to it 20 yrs ago. Haven't been able to find a copy since.

Imperial Officer that’s because they prefer to paint him as a villain, suppressing any notion of a military government, especially with Eisenhower becoming president right after. McArthur’s opinion might have been extreme, but if you recall his rule of Japan was anything but bloodthirsty. He’s more practical and visionary than others. He viewed his role as a soldier beyond purely militaristically, which made him a threat to the political class and rightfully so. Don’t get me wrong. If I’m Truman, I would have done the same but think about this: a divided Korea is an issue till day while a communist ruled Vietnam is veering towards America for help against China eventually. McArthur might have seen something that others couldn’t at the time.

@@aaronlimeuchin7352 I think he was considering options more than outright shouting for nukes. After all, at the time, the effect of nuclear strikes have not been throughly studied and many generals were disappointed by Truman s inaction that led to Communist victory in China, especially considering his staunch anti-Stalin stance in Europe and Korean intervention. The result of not finishing off Korea might have spilled over to Vietnam and later interventions but of course those were hindsight. Ive always agree with Truman more than McArthur, but sometime I wonder if more McArthurs are running the operations in the Middle East, perhaps it would not turn out to be such a mess.

@@lc9245 Thing is, MacArthur wasn't just pitching it as an option. He (and others in the Truman administration) were very publicly calling for the use of atomic bombs in Manchuria and Korea. The reason Truman didn't do it was because in 1949, the Soviets had successfully built their own nuclear weapons and Stalin had actually called Truman to tell him that if the Americans used nukes in Korea, the Soviets would nuke Europe. Not quite Mutually Assured Destruction, but it was clear that a proto form of the MAD theory certainly played in Truman's decision to get rid of MacArthur. The other was that MacArthur was openly questioning and undermining Truman at home politically which Truman could not have.

The conduct of this war by the US at the head of the coalition is quite impressing, and demonstrates plainly that they’ve learned their lessons from WW2. Being able to turn over two situations looking stalled at best or dire at worst is a demonstration of great military skills. The shifting points from the Pusan perimeter and between the 3rd and 4th offensive really makes this war interesting to learn. I would have liked more detailed depictions of the major engagements of this conflit, because i feel that modern military warfare is too often only presented on the strategical level, not enough on the tactical level. Ben Winter Well using a nuke was more effective in 1945 for Truman because the U.S. were the only country to have such a weapon. Usage in 1952-53 could have lead to major Soviet nuclear retaliation and escalation. @@davidcarlson4958 Define "winning." If you think the only way to win was to drive the North Korean state out of existence and drive the Chinese out of Korea, sure, he didn't. However, Ridgway prevented defeat, restored the border essentially to the 38th Parallel, and, most importantly, he did it without escalating to a wider war, which would have almost certainly gone nuclear. It's not the flashy "total" victory MacArthur had wanted, but it was a realistic one for the configuration of power that existed and the larger set of Cold War tension. Probably the only way for MacArthur's vision to succeed would have been to turn the Yalu River into an impassible nuclear wasteland.

8:26 Much of the movements were not dictated by goals for territorial gains on the Chinese side (and thus for both sides in the war). Chinese goal was to annihilate enough non-Korean UN troops to force a strategic decision on UN's side to yield. The movements were thus decided by operational level details. Chinese encirclement doesn't just fail at theatre level. They had a hard time removing resistance of every hill they encircled. And that limitation was not dominated by enemy air superiority. Instead, it was due to extreme lack of fire power on the side of the Chinese. Their best weapon was hand grenades that did more to scare than to kill. Meanwhile, Chinese retreats tended to be voluntary, again, mainly due to fire power disparity. To that end, references are nice things.

The US in general, and MacArthur in particular, were experiencing what one could call victory fever as well as a raised level of expectation. WWI and WW2 were recent events in 1950. Both ended with the complete capitulation of an enemy government, featuring a signing ceremony. This is unusual in history as the vast majority of wars in history don't end this way. Because WWI and WW2 ended with such an abject capitulation/signing ceremony, this raised the expectation of some Americans, especially MacArthur. Mac could not fathom an ending to the Korean War in any way other than what he experienced with Germany and Japan--with North Korea and China meekly signing surrender papers and a time and place of Mac's choosing. Truman correctly wanted the war prosecuted as a limited war, not an unlimited war, which is what WWI and WW2 were. A limited war with the limited objective of the South Korean government being preserved. Truman had no alternative but to fire Mac. In this way, Mac was a victim of his own past success--which corrupted his judgment.

But since the stalemate, their supply was gradually recovered and reached a bearable standard. That's why they can hold the line for another 2 years. This also saved the POWs. At the beginning of Chinese offensive, they have totally no preparation and resources for UN and ROK POWs and just let them die on road. When it came into stalemate, the survived POWs also had a better life, which at least better than what happened in WW2

The United States has enough industrial power, the american just overrunning everything with sheer numbers. With perfect tactics (night battles, etc.) and the will of the army, China has achieved balance in frontal warfare and achieved the most important war objectives. That's why China can once again stand as a strong country in the world, and then be eligible to participate in the 1954 Geneva Conference en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1954_Geneva_Conference After the Korean War, the U.S. military never attempted to send all military personnel to 17 degrees north latitude, establishing an American version of Vietnam next to China. @Millennial Gentleman Coincidentally, I am also half a nationalist, and the other half is a leftist supporter. From the statistical results, the United States is the representative of quality. I do not deny it and will learn from you. But if you look at the time longer, if your country has existed for more than 3,000 years, can you guarantee that it will always be strong and advanced? Think of the former overlord, 500 years later, in Spain's civil war, it became the "chess board" of a great power. Quality is not only in statistics, I think "will" and "tactics" are also a kind of quality, especially when the paper data is not good enough. Not to mention the Korean War, let’s take a look at the modern United States’ sense of identity and whether it can achieve sufficient “will” and “tactics” after its decline.

Don't forget that your government made war on dozens of countries accross the globe (Iran, Korea, Japan, Afghanistan, Somalia, Panama, Cuba, Vietnam, Lybia, Bosnia,...) no counting all the destabilization campaigns to overthrow governments who are not US friends or who refuse to sell cheap oil. Did you forget the millions who died because of USMC in Irak for *FAKE* weapons of mass destruction ? And now that the US are slowly withdrawing from Afghanistan, the Talibans get back to power, like the Vietcongs after Vietnam war, like the communists in Cuba after the Pig Bay's Invasion, ... history repeats itself.

@@mikefay5698 theres no my version or your version. Theres the historic version of history. 1. The korean war started as North Korea, armed and told by the Soviets, to attack South Korea. It was successful and before South Korea could've been completely annihilated, the U.N led by the U.S interfered and pushed the North Koreans back. And before the North Korean could've been annihilated, the Chinese joined the war. 2. Soviets never cared about the north koreans. After they lend their weapons at a price to them at the beginning of the war, they just stopped caring. The chinese were afraid of having American troops right on their border across the Yalu, that's why they "borrowed" weapons from the soviets which took decades to pay back. 3. The current infighting among the CCP and the natural disasters are what's tearing China apart. Unlike what most people believes, there're multiple factions within the CCP and there are constant infighting over positions and projects. Xi thought himself to be strong without establishing enough power, and as a result, the party tears itself from the within.

Before anyone accuses anyone of "re-writing history", it behooves the accuser to first do some research into what the history is supposed to look like by relying on academically credited resources. Here are some scholastic consensuses in the West on Korea War related issues *1, prior to the war, both Koreas were actively preparing for war and determined to conquer each other by military means.* No credited historians question the fact that South Korea under the dictatorship of Rhee Syng-man was just as hell-bent on militarily crashing the North as Kim was on crashing the South. His government was so antithetical to the division of Korea that South Korea government took no part in the subsequent peace negotiation and didn't even sign the truce in 1953. Rhee never recognized the 38th line and various plans had been drawn up by South Korea of invading and annexing the North.(Since South Korea's democratization in late 1980, these plans had long been declassified.) The only problem was the South Korea army was much weaker due to the less-than-abundant American military aids/weapon transfer. (In contrast, the Soviet sponsored the North lavishly.) While the North attacked first, the intention of eventually crossing the 38th line and vanquishing the other side on battlefield was the same for both sides. *2, Kim Il-sung started the war without China's knowledge.* Kim and CCP were indeed allies. The former lent the later substantial support when CCP was on defensive in Manchuria under the KMT's onslaught during 1946-1947. When CCP finally turned the tiding around in Chinese Civil War in 1949, Kim approached Mao and asked for reciprocal support in the upcoming Korean Civil War. To Kim's chagrin, Mao sternly warned him against starting a war, pointing out the fact that unlike the Chinese Civil War, which was purely a domestic affair, the 38th line was legitimized by the UN resolutions. Crossing the line inevitably risked Great Power's intervention. The disappointed Kim went to Moscow instead and acquired Stalin's approval. When North Korean launched sudden attack on June 25th 1950, CCP leadership was as caught off-guard as the South Koreans. *3, CCP's interests and intentions were aligned against being dragged into Korea War in 1950.* The Battle of Hainan, the last major battle of Chinese Civil War only ended in May 1950. KMT, though having largely retreated to Taiwan, was still in control of many groups of islands right off the Chinese coast, where it stationed its army that was still half a million strong. Its powerful air-force and navy completely dominated the air and sea and regularly bombarded the Mainland targets. In vast parts of Southwestern China, where CCP marched in only a few months before, the disintegrated Nationalists forces were reorganized in to guerrilla bands and continued to wage mobile wars against CCP, giving the latter a taste of its own medicine.(The assortment of anti-Communist forces had 2 million fighting men in 1950, and compelled CCP to launch the "Banditry Elimination Campaigns", which raged on up until late 1952.) At the time the CCP's attention and resources were entirely dedicated to consolidating its control of the Mainland, building its air-force/navy from scratch, readying its force for the "liberation" of Tibet, and preparing for the upcoming Battle of Taiwan, which was planned to be launched in the summer of 1951. The last thing CCP wanted was being dragged into a foreign war before the final defeat of KMT. Even more nightmarish for CCP was the scenario of American intervention into the Chinese Civil War on the side of KMT. The need to avoid such occurrence was the primary reason why Mao strenuously tried to dissuade Kim from stirring up trouble in Korean Peninsular while the Chinese Civil War was still raging on. *4, US moved its fleet into Taiwanese strait immediately after the war's outbreak.* The fact Kim took the matter into his own hand without informing CCP did not register with the Americans, who saw the Communist world as a monolithic block, where all Communists were puppets of Moscow. (Such block-based perception was also the catalyst for America's intervention in Vietnam War a decade later.) On on June 27th, two days after the war's outbreak, Trumen ordered the 7th fleet to sail into the strait of Taiwan and declared the inclusion of Taiwan into America's strategic defense circle in the Pacific. From CCP's perspective, it was an act of naked aggression - the USA, despite its emphatic assurance of non-intervention in the Chinese Civil War, (as uttered in the official White Paper it issued in August, 1949,) now blatantly went back on its own words and entered the Chinese Civil War without any provocation from CCP. *5, CCP only moved to preparing intervention after the UN force pushed north of the 38th line.* There had been debate among the Allies as to whether to stop at the 38th line, or to cross the line only to further destroy the North Korean army and then withdraw back to the South, or to push for the complete destruction of the North Korean state and the annexation of all its territories to South Korea. General MacArthur most adamantly insisted upon the last option and he prevailed in the end. It represented a controversially "expensive" interpretation of the UN mandate, which simply defines the objective as "stopping aggression". It also ignored RPC's repeated warning that PRC would not "sit and watch" should the UN force cross the 38th line. On Oct1st, UN force crossed the line. On Oct. 8th, CCP's Politburo reached the decision of sending in PVA. On Oct 15th, MacArthur assured Truman the Chinese were simply posturing and the UN force would secure the Chinese Border in the next few days and the war would be over by November and the soldiers would return home before Christmas. On Oct. 19th, PVA crossed the Yalu River. The rest is history. *6, Kim Il-sung would enter Manchuria should he be defeated in North Korea.* Pursuant to the existing treaties signed between CCP and Kim's party (initially in 1947 then again in 1949), in the event of defeat on Korean Peninsular, CCP was obligated to permit Korean Communist's retreat to Manchuria, where it could regroup and set up a guerilla base as it did in WWII. Further more, Stalin gave CCP explicit instruction that Kim should rebuild his force in Manchuria if he was forced out of North Korea. That would be disaster for CCP and China in general for two reasons: firstly it would significantly undermine China's sovereignty in Manchuria, given that Kim would operate as a "state within state", enlisting support from local Korean ethnic minorities. (It would bear directly analogy to the Palestinian Liberation Organization's retreat to Jordan, and later Lebanon, after its expulsion by Israel. The PLO's creation of a "state within state" led to both war with Jordan and Lebanese Civil War.) Secondly, it would likely trigger UN invasion of Manchuria, justified by the same "expensive" interpretation of the UN mandate. Given the UN force ignored the Inter-Korean border in pursuit of Kim, there was little reason to believe it would definitely stop at the Chinese-Korean border should Kim retreat to Manchuria. CCP was in no position to defy Stalin by refusing Kim's entry. The only effective strategy of forestalling its happening was to not let Kim be pushed out of North Korea. *7, even without Kim's retreat to Manchuria, there were many signposts suggesting the US might be planning to use Korea as the springboard to launch direct invasion of Mainland China in coordination with KMT.* General MacArthur visited Taiwan on July 31st, where he made some dramatic speeches on solidarity with the Nationalists in common struggle against the Communists. There was also the discussion on airlifting Nationalist divisions directly to Korea. (Remember, this was 2 month and 1 week before the CCP decided to participate in Korean War.) KMT propaganda made maximum hay of the visit, proclaiming it as the beginning of Chinese Civil War Phase II, where KMT would fight alongside Americans to take the Mainland China back, starting from Manchuria. Chiang Kai-shek himself was thrilled at such proposals. (Ever since KMT's loss of Mainland China, its propaganda machine had been dialed up to 11, blaring out assertions 24/7 that the defeat on Mainland was merely a temporary setback, and the US would join the war soon, and the counter-attack was imminent.) The war plan KMT drafted up involved deploying four Nationalist army groups to Korea to attack across the Manchurian border, and a massive simultaneous amphibious assault from Taiwan. Blessed with hindsight, we know now that Truman eventually overruled MacArthur and refused to endorse Chiang's attempt at escalation. CCP leadership in the summer of 1950 did not know that. With American soldiers a stone's throw away from Yalu River, the prospect of American invasion of Manchuria on behalf of KMT did not at all seem far-fetched.

Korea featured one of Canada's greatest military achievements at the Battle of Kapyong in late April 1951, when 700 Canadians defended the crucial Hill 677 against 5,000 enemy troops over two days of constant fighting. This allowed the other UN forces in the area to consolidate, and as such contributed significantly to the UN's blunting of the Fifth Phase Offensive.

@Hoàng Nguyên "Knockwd out"? Yeah right. USA was beating North Vietnam in nearly every battle they fought together. The body count of communist forces when they faced US forces (not South Vietnamese) is proof of that. What won that war was bad leadership during the era, it's containment/policing strategy and American's lack of faith in the objective of the war. American sentiment led to US withdrawal from that war. Anyway Communists signed Paris Peace Accords essentially accepting South Vietnam as a sovereign nation and an end to the war and therefore a defeat in a strictly offensive war. When the reneging communists reinvaded the South, the US government would not accept any plan to go back into vietnam or provide support. That's the only way the communists could win, take the high casualties and hope the war would become so unpopular at home the US would pull out, they did. But what did the people of the South really win? South Korea is also independent but they are one of the wealthiest nations in East Asia compared to the communist North worshipping the Kim family and can't even be seen from space. Likewise, all vietnam got was the distinction of being another impoverished communist country, one of the poorest in the Asia (and pretty poor globally). But hey I hear they're having to embrace Capitalism to survive after all, even hear they've opened their first McDonald's restaurants there. Because in the real world Communism is a stupid, failed doctrine.
