Kings and Generals animated historical animated documentary series on the Ottoman Wars continues with the second video in the mini-series on the Long Turkish War. In the aftermath of the battle of Calugareni of 1595 ( • Battle of Calugareni 1... ), the Ottoman empire is on the back foot in its war against a wide European alliance, but the battle of Mezokeresztes of 1596 would show that the sultans are still strong enough to enforce their will ( • Battle of Mezokereszte... ). This episode will describe the continued Austro-Turkish struggle for the Romanian principalities of Wallachia, Transylvania and Moldavia, and the battles of Selimbar and Miraslau at the tail end of the Long Turkish War.
Previously in our animated historical documentary series on the Ottoman Wars, we have covered the battles of Kosovo (bit.ly/2JI3F0p), Nicopolis (bit.ly/2zUNRre), Ankara (bit.ly/2uW7r0D), Varna (bit.ly/2JIK2VG), Second Kosovo, Constantinople (bit.ly/2uELWlI), Belgrade, Targoviste and Otlukbeli (bit.ly/2JOBlcQ), Vaslui, Valea Alba (bit.ly/2C9Cm0l), Skanderbeg's rebellion (bit.ly/2BYMYgW), Breadfield, Krbava, Otranto and Chaldiran (bit.ly/2DUa3mJ)the Ottoman-Mamluk War of 1516-1517 (bit.ly/2CxSkyp), siege of Rhodes in 1522 (bit.ly/2GHrRTC), the battle of Mohacs of 1526 (bit.ly/2V1YgeQ), the siege of Vienna of 1529 (bit.ly/2VRujdc), the battle of Preveza (bit.ly/2KR1uwf) and the battles of Gorjani, siege of Castelnuovo (bit.ly/2MoDZMa), sieges of Buda and Eger (bit.ly/2kcVkuK). the siege of Malta (bit.ly/374kXSh), siege of Szigetvar (bit.ly/2Nj6xVW) Famagusta (bit.ly/3b5dXX0), Lepanto (bit.ly/2SocQcX) and the Ottoman-Portuguese War: • Ottoman-Portuguese War...

@CipiRipi00 I disagree, all armies up until the gunpowder were susceptible to feign retreats , bloodlust would consume armies of antiquity especially when they’d already been suffering, the feigned retreat was about the illusion of a rout and all armies would kill as many as possible while running away cause it’s safer and easier the last example of this I found was in Japan in the 16 century , these days there’s no need to chase when bullets and bombs fly faster than even cars can drive

Michael's resources were almost completely depleated after the impressive but serious campaigns he fough. He knew chasing Basta the way he did was very risky but he needed to score a decisive victory then and there because he had little chance in a drawn out conflict. So Michael, a proven and experienced, very good strategist, took the risk and chased hoping it will work. Sadly, it didn't. But it was a risk he nonetheless had to take.

I'm tingling with anticipation for the following year, 1601 is the siege of Kanije in Hungary, one of the few instances where the Ottomans found themselves besieged rather than being the besiegers and managed to rout an Austrian army nearly 7 times larger than their own thanks to a Bosnian coffee crackhead named Tıryaki Hasan Pasha who brilliantly lead the defense and suicidal yet successful charge against the Austrians towards the end.

What i learned from this channel so far: 1. Don't chase Turkic armies, they feign retreat and will make you shit your pee. 2. Don't go in to mountain passes, Bulgarian ambushers will make your scull a drinking cup. 3. Don't be a Byzantine enemy, nobility or basilius. You will end up puking your guts or with a dagger in your back. 4. Don't let your soldiers loot, by the sight of gold coins they become morons. 5. Don't trust a vassal... like ever... you will be betrayed! 6. If you hear throat singing... you are done! say your prayers. 7. Never become a cocky French crusader fighting in the Holy lands or the Balkans.

Before the main reigns of Radu Mihnea, one of Mihai's governors and confidants, Radu Serban, was Wallachia Prince for almost 10 years, and he defeated the Tatar armies and twice the armies of the Transylvanian principality. He also supported Saxon's rebellions in Transylvania. So the reign of MIhai in Wallachia has some continuity (the military leaders were again the Buzescu brothers and some of the Mihai captains as Marza and Ratz).

From that perspective... long story short would be: Michael The Brave and the 3 other Rulers early on in the video... were part of the Holy League, that caused massive delays in the War against Holy Roman Empire in Austrian area. Michael the Brave with some support from the other 3 delivered several defeats to the main general that was active in Austria before, Sinan Pasha, causing him to be removed from his position in the Ottoman Empire. However sometime later the Sultan still managed a big victory against Austrian and Transylvanian forces at Mezokeresztes. But apparently Michael the Brave never really lost direct battles against Ottomans, only had strategic retreats when the numbers were too big and he had to wait reinforcements...his strategies were apparently superior while the Sultan never considered using his full army under him to be wasted on a less important and rich region, like Wallachia, which has in fact been historically a region that caused too many losses and too few riches, almost like a death trap. It also stopped the supply route on the Danube for Ottoman army towards Holy Roman Empire war.

Mihai not a military man ?
@EmilNicolaiePerhinschi
@EmilNicolaiePerhinschi Жыл бұрын
@@mihailupu5107 he had an excellent position at Miraslau and left it chasing a simulated retreat ... so he was no general :) He was very good with money. An army of 20k mercenaries was huge at the time, the battles of the English Civil War had like 12k on each side, for the population of Wallachia 20k was huge. Maurice de Nassau, probably the best general of the era fought with like 10-20000 troops. If you look at the wars between France and Spain before 1600 the numbers were in the same ballpark, and both countries had populations that were a lot larger. Mihai's well equipped army could have challenged Cromwell and give him a run for the money :). Mihai was good with logistics: the fast movements "Kings and Generals" speaks about were not easy, at that time a good march was 15km/day. He had to be to raise himself from the bastard son of an innkeeper to Domn of Wallachia simply by trading cattle: in that context successful cattle trading meant leading or at least organizing the transport of huge herds to Vienna, Venice and Constantinople, and that involved buying rights of way, renting pasture on the road, hiring guards and paying for protection etc. :-). He had generals (the three Buzescu brothers who were effective military commanders during his reign and after) when he needed stuff done but they were not with him at Miraslau. Only Novak was with him at Miraslau, and Novak was a hajduk, that is irregular/light infantry. Lecca was there too but his later career was in diplomacy not in the military so I guess that was not his main strength.

@mihailupu5107 Жыл бұрын
@@EmilNicolaiePerhinschi You have to understand the battle of Miraslau on a strategical level not only tactical. If Mihai kept his position that would've been a tactical victory, but that wasnt enough for him. To secure his newly formed Kingdom he needed a decisive victory since he couldnt fight for long against Basta with the Polish and Ottomans banging at his door, he needed to defeat him there and then, so he gambled and lost. And if you dont know, a tactical victory is a victory on the battlefield that doesnt have a big impact on the war. For example Calugareni was a tactical victory, but Mihai still had to retreat and Ottomans occupied Bucharest and Targoviste.

@Emil Nicolaie Perhinschi So you are just going to ignore all the other victories and say he was no general because of one disaster? He had to win a decisive battle, idk if you watched the video, but Poland was right about to attack and Michael knew it. He has to win a quick victory, so he could focus on the Poles. That he didn't win a battle doesn't mean he was no general, how did you come up with that?

@@D.A.R.89 one defeat is usually enough :-) , especially when almost all the other victories were gained by troops led by somebody else you mean that being good with logistics and money is not worth praising and the only thing of value is being an effective general in the field ?

Great, although short, documentary overall but one small mistake stud out. The Bathory familly is of swabian (german). It was founded by the brothers Gut and Kelad, who immigrated into Hungary from Staufen im Breisgau, during the reign of King Peter, who himself was partly of Venetian descent.

Once, by agreement with the German Emperor, the Nalyvaiko's Cossacks attacked the large Turkish fortress Tyagin (modern Bendery). The Cossacks occupied the city, but failed to take possession of the citadel, then the ruler Aaron the Tyrant attacked the Nalivaiko's troops at the head of a seven thousandth army of Turks, Moldavians and Tatars. The Cossacks had to retreat. The leader did not expect hostile actions from the Moldavian ruler, with whom he had secret connections before, and Aaron assured him that he was ready to go over to the side of the Christian troops. It was, no doubt, a stab in the back, and on the banks of the Dniester, Severyn Nalyvaiko swore to take revenge on the Moldavian at all costs. On October 29, 1594, a united Cossack army of about 12,000 people under forty banners (registered Cossacks led by Jan Orishovskiy, Zaporizhian Cossacks led by Grigory Loboda and detachments of Severin Nalivaiko) crossed the Dniester in the Soroka region and moved to Tsetsora. Aaron was defeated three times in skirmishes and fled in disgrace. The Cossacks occupied Tetsora and the capital of the state, the city of Iași.

I don't know where you found this info, because Aron the Tyrant started the rebellion against the Ottomans only on November 5, 1594, by killing the Ottoman creditors in the Moldovan capital - Iasi. In January 1595 he signed an alliance with the Cossacks. After that, he launched campaigns against the fortress of Bender, Kilia, Akkerman, and pillaged Northern Dobrudja. By March 1595 he took and devastated the city of Ismail. He lost the throne in May 1595 after his general Stefan Razvan overthrew him. The Cossacks attacked Aron in July 1594 before all those events I described, maybe because they considered Aron to be loyal to the Sultan even if a month earlier he was defending the capital against Tatars. So your story about Aron attacking the Cossacks at Bendery doesn't seem to be true.
