Something that I've noticed on every video on Teutonic conquest in the Baltics is that Samogitian lands are always included within the Crusader lands. A common misconception. Nobody truly controlled the Samogitian lands up until 1430ish, not even the Lithuanians. They are the Scotland of the Baltics in essence. The only reason that it is believed that Teutons controlled these lands was via order of king Jogaila when he granted them lands that he didn't own and that Crusaders couldn't secure. Despite that I love your channel, it is always nice to get new perspectives. Can't wait for more videos :]

Vikings with castles and more praying.
@marcbartuschka6372Күн бұрын
Lets say that would be complicated. First the nationalistic stories of the lands the Knights ruled over did (with some reason) has not the best memory towards them. Their conquest was brutal and full of religious bigottery, and of course both Polish and also Baltic and Russian national myths despise them as enemies.Second and more important, their conquest was idealized by radical German Nationalists a lot and that left with good reason a foul taste in the mouth of many, since both thr Freikorps after the First World War and the Nazis did pay a lot respect towards them (or the picture they had from them). They were "perfect" example for the stupid story of that it needed German to "civilize" the lands (and look down on the native people). No wonder that they are not liked. So to make them the heroes is difficult, to say the least, and I would understand iwant to avoid such things.

@@marcbartuschka6372 A movie wouldn’t have to portray them as perfect heroes without mistakes. It could just aim to show their perspective as realistic as possible. Both their religious zealousness, but also their bad views of pagan tribes. They started because of a call to help from Poland, so it could also show the worsening of relations between Poland and the Teutonic State.
@xhagast22 сағат бұрын
@@KashTube-n8y It astonishes me the pathetic size and power of the armies involved. The Saxon invasion of Britain involved larger armies, and the Britons managed to hold out for decades. Britain's standing Roman garrison amounted to 15,000 men plus auxiliaries. "Scholars" debate whether the Dark Ages really existed. I have no doubts. The Vikings stood out in an age of utter misery and barbarism. The series Vikings watches like a documentary in the senseless atrocities of the Maras in El Salvador.

The organization of the Order, and the way it managed its lands and subjects, is very interesting. One wonders what would have happened if, instead of collapsing, the Order would have managed to adapt, survive and even thrive to a more modern time - what kind of society would have evolved? It also makes for an interesting fantasy setting - I'm sure there are plenty of similar states in fantasy media!
@majorearl12Күн бұрын
I actually did this to a certain extent. I played Age of History 2 as the Teutonic Order into the 15th century. My conquest was basically eastern US and almost exactly the Third Reich's lands before Barbarossa. From here i stated that the government would change and adapt into a Monarchy like the German Empire, then would mold into a Constitutional Monarchy and then a Republic. The Teutonic Order would play a backseat and be essentially a higher-than-Government Police force, they would ensure the government would serve the people, running hospitals, and stick to their roots on serving people. But also a military arm to ensure that evil wouldn't rise. Didnt stop nazis and a second world war, but the Teutonic States of America ended up assisting in a Battle of Berlin (without a fullscale invasion of Europe) that ended the war. From here the Teutonic Order became like a Secret Service for the leaders under the Teuton Name, and still worked to help the poor and weak.

there was no forcefull assimialation. once conquered Order didn't really care much about spiritual life and customs of Prussians. In fact they kinda wanted them to stay that way, since they could get more out of them in taxes, duties and military service, then from free settlers. In XVI century there was still several thousand Prussians that were pagans. still, they all ultimately slowly assimilated over time, nobles first, then the rest.
@aglassofcacao80512 күн бұрын
Assimilated through time. Think of how dialects or languages die out. First they start adding a few German words into their vocabulary followed over the generations by adding more and more German words and sentence structuring. Until the original languages or dialect is gone besides some words and sayings. They got fully assimilated in 17th maybe even 18th century If i remember correctly. All the wars and pests ravaging Eastern Prussia also didnt help to keep the native Prussians alive longer either.
