Thank you for your videos... I’m no longer scared to death of snakes. I’ve helped a few across the road because of you!! I’ve educated my kids because of you. I’ve educated strangers because of you... I’m in WV and seems like everyone wants to kill them instantly and there’s no sense in it... THANK YOU!

@Walter You didn't have to be a pretentious dick to someone who just wanted to learn about snakes as if everyone should just automatically know. You are right, you can watch the videos, but maybe there are specific pieces of information the person wanted to find out about that can't always be gathered from these videos. Or, maybe they are a younger individual and don't entirely know all the places and resources out there directing them where to look, so their inclination is to ask someone they look up to. So no, its not common sense, especially if you aren't all that familiar with snakes.

Beautiful country! The salamanders indicate a healthy habitat and the snakes were gorgeous, though unappreciative of your admiration. I've always had a special fondness for lizards, which dates back to my growing up catching and releasing "horny toads" (horned lizards) in central and west Texas. We would put them to "sleep" by gently petting their heads. When we replaced them on the ground, they would wake up after a moment and go about their business without particular hurry or fear. Wonderful little creatures. The babies are cute beyond belief. Toads always seemed businesslike, always seeming to know the best places to set up shop to find bugs, like under street lamps. They are ungainly and not particularly attractive according to standard human esthetics, but they have the most beautiful eyes. West Texas has spadefoot toads, and after a rare big rain their babies were everywhere. Thank you for taking us along. Refreshing, especially in these times, and brings back good memories.

Wow, Noah. What a great vid re: king snakes. I thought both the first two were gorgeous . . . but then came the huge breeding male! What awesome snakes. I’ve lived up here in south Jersey since ‘91. Only found one Eastern King. Unfortunately, a sub adult DOR in the Pine Barrens. Need to go back out hunting for them this season. Thx for being such a great ambassador for southern serpents. 😉

I went herping for the first time today but there was a twist. I never left the patio of my apartment. Woke up and a 4ft Eastern Coachwhip slithered by then later a 1.5ft Western ribbon snake. We have tons of Cuban and Green anoles I watch all the time. To top the experience later that night an Opossum walked by. I'm calling the experience Lazy Herping. Lol

I went herping earlier today and didn't see anything in the woods near my house. I guess finding my pet eastern box turtles in my backyard to feed them doesn't necessarily count as herping. I went hiking along the canal in the next town over last night and literally saw hundreds of frogs and toads though. I mostly saw American toads, leopard frogs and green frogs. The canal is about a 15 minute drive from my house.

Hey man, I tried going herping but I couldn’t flip anything or find anything out and about. Are there just days when herps just aren’t find-able? I did find what I think was a huge 5 lined skink. It had a body of a blue tounged skink but it had the lines, it was just really fat. It was basking before I noticed it and it went zoom (No need to identify it not what I’m asking)
@esthertundrafield36464 жыл бұрын
Herping questions when you pick up a creature from underneith a rock when your done looking at it do you put it next to the rock? or put it back under i would worry about smashing it xD
@houstonoutdoors66794 жыл бұрын
Yeah put the rock back without the animal under then encourage it to crawl back under.
@catherinehubbard11674 жыл бұрын
Esther Tundrafield: Put the rock or log back and let them crawl under. In an earlier one of his videos, they herped in an area where someone who had been there before them apparently just dropped the cover back down on the animals. They found many dead or badly injured crushed animals and cursed at the careless, stupid jerk who had done it. So pass the word: put it down and let them crawl back on their own. Sometimes you might need to help them find the entrance but usually they find it by themselves. It's interesting to watch the animals as they get back into their safe retreats. With some snakes it's comical, like slurping a big noodle.

@jimmyjames20224 жыл бұрын
Handling salamanders with only a dry hand damages their "skin". Natural oils, salts or any perfumes from lotion, soaps etc. and transferring pathogens such as chytrid across individuals, plus just plain burns from the dryness. Noah is very careful with animals generally, but this one thing might be considered going forward.
@NathanOberdier4 жыл бұрын

Back in the day, I had a pair of Kings that made that big boy look kind of petite. One was an Eastern Chain and the other one of those South Florida "speckled" - chocolate brown with a gold spot on each scale. I kept them in a Bio Lab at a college where they had all u can eat lab rats and not only were they both just shy of 7 ft, as you can imagine they were on the very hefty side as well. They were perfectly behaved and made a lot of friends out of the ignorant would-be herp haters.

@Walter I have been trying to educate my family for years. I tell them just because they don't like or are afraid of snakes doesn't mean that they have to kill them. Not a good idea to keep wild caught snakes as pets. 1) Terrible for the Animal. Most likely will stress out and will not eat when you attempt to feed him. Your also taking an animal from its natural habitat. 2) Wild snakes are more prone to disease and other health problems. Which means a lot more $ out of your pocket. 3) Without knowing the correct habitat features, you may end up stressing a snake terribly bad to the point of suicide.
