The creator of Kirby, Masahiro Sakurai, once briefly talked about the series's inception, and according to that, he was initially doubted quite a bit on his first game when presenting his ideas for it (he wanted it to be a game that a beginner could play, during a time where most games were rather unforgiving.) But he went through with it anyway, and the rest is history, as they say. So that thing about "being yourself" and being bold despite an idea initially maybe seeming stupid? One could argue it's always been rooted within the series, I think. Sakurai left the series's developer HAL Laboratories long ago now - Return to Dreamland wasn't his game - but I think Kirby has managed to retain that identity in spite of that. Related note and a slight tangent, Sakurai is currently uploading to a KZbin channel as a project where he talks about game design and everything surrounding that, and that's where he talked about this story with Kirby as well. It's quite fascinating.

Fun facts about Kirby music. Kirby music has a very distinct sound and thats because they repurpose the old soundfonts from the SNES days and refine it while adding modern sounds. Forgotten Land is the only time they completely ditch the OG sounds but I think it gives it a certain charm.

To answer your question about how long the composers have worked on the series, Jun Ishikawa has been with the series since the beginning, having composed all the music for the first game Kirby’s Dream Land (1992). Hirokazu Ando started with the second game Kirby’s Adventure (1993), and the two have been the main composers for the series until Yuuta Ogasawara joined with Kirby Star Allies (2017) and Yuki Shimooka with the second soundtrack release for Kirby cafe (2019). Fun fact about “Fly Kirby!”’s composer Hirokazu Ando, he doesn’t actually account for playability when composing music. This results in a rather unique feel to many of his pieces. The main design philosophy of the Kirby series is that the games are simple and forgiving enough to be easily approachable for someone who has never played any games to pick up, but have enough depth to still keep experienced players interested. This is reflected all over the series, including Kirby’s physics, the copy ability system, how the series handles its storytelling and lore, the mini-games, and of course, music. For example, one of the series’s main themes Green Greens has a simple melody that’s easy to pick up even for non-musicians, but even that has some tricky harmonies which can challenge medium-level musicians.

What's funny is that Kirby didn't even start out with the ability to absorb enemy powers. In the first game, he just inhaled and exhaled everything. The second game introduced the power copying and the rest is history. The original version of Gourmet Race is from Kirby Super Star on the SNES, so most likely you haven't heard it, no. "Welcome Your New Overlord" is yet another Kirby final boss theme (and not even the last phase of said boss. That would be C-R-O-W-N-E-D, which is also on your list.) You'll see those get requested a LOT, and for very good reason. Honestly, as a first Kirby game, Return to Dream Land is actually a very good place to start. It pretty much codifies everything that is modern Kirby. The Deluxe version is a remake that recently came out on the Switch, so it's also easily accessible for you. Hypothetically speaking, of course. :P

@SacredFaerie4 ай бұрын
Hey! Glad to see you finally do a battle theme by Ishikawa! The first theme you listened to is "Fly, Kirby!" from Kirby's Return to Dream Land. Fun fact, based on internal filenames, it's most likely that this song was originally composed for a level that takes place on the Halberd, which is Meta Knight's battleship, for a cancelled Kirby game for the GameCube. However, that's completely different from the context it's used for in Return to Dream Land. This one is composed by Hirokazu Ando, who joined the series on the second game and is credited as "Lead Sound" in basically all the games. Unfortunately, it seems you used an upload from Gilvasunner. For some reason, Gilvasunner's Return to Dream Land uploads are incredibly low quality and compressed unlike their usual upload quality, so the song sounded way more bit-crunched than it is in-game. Of course, it doesn't matter that much, especially when the point of the video is to talk about the composition rather than the sound quality. 7:50 Fun fact, but Kirby's signature power of copying his opponent's abilities was not in the first Kirby game. Kirby's original appeal was simply that he ate star-shaped debris kicked up by enemy attacks and spat them back out at his opponents. Being able to swallow his opponents or projectiles for abilities was introduced in the second game. The second theme is Welcome Your New Overlord. The Deluxe version is a remake that came out 12 years later, the music is just given some reverb and slightly higher synth quality, otherwise the music is basically unchanged. This one is composed by Jun Ishikawa, who has been composing for the series since the first game. At 12:00 you mentioned how the guitar somewhat sounded like an electric guitar but also doesn't, the secret to it is actually really simple, the guitar in the song is sped up to maybe around 2x, it sounds more like natural guitar playing when the song is played at half speed. You mentioned wanting to hear both these themes orchestrated. Well there's actually an orchestral version medley of these two themes in the official album that only goes by the title "Bonus Track: Last Battle". Specifically, it's a medley of four songs, Let Me Explain Everything, "Fly, Kirby!", Welcome Your New Overlord, and CROWNED. With you having heard these two themes, I eagerly await the day you might listen to CROWNED, which is the phase 2 to Welcome Your New Overlord, and "Mistilteinn, Tree Crown Without a Ruler", which is like a response to CROWNED newly composed for the Deluxe remake in a newly added mode. In terms of first Kirby game, this game Return to Dream Land Deluxe is actually a great starting point, because it's a remake of the game that's considered the start of the modern era. The other very good choice would be Kirby and the Forgotten Land, also for the Switch, which is the most recent Kirby game besides RtDL DX being a remake.

Arguably the best game in the series, it’s a game I’d recommend to pretty much anyone. If you're interested in live orchestral Kirby music, there's concerts for the 25th and 30th anniversaries. The 25th anniversary one mainly focuses on medleys, playing almost no full songs, and generally slows down the tempo and tries to sound whimsical. The 30th anniversary one is my preferred concert, playing songs as a more direct adaptation but fusing in a lot of jazz elements. The live version of The Star-Conquering Traveler is absolute ear candy.

HELL YE, more Kirby babeee! Always love seeing Kirby music get some respect, and two BANGERS from RTDL and Deluxe (remake for Switch)! Ok so, Fly Kirby Fly (another dimension) is a song during the final act, leading to the final boss. There are two motifs in this long actually. The first is the main theme of Return to Dreamland specifically “cookie country” (2:26). The second motif is a song you’ll hear throughout the series called “Kirby’s Triumphant return” (2:43). It dates back to Kirby Super Star on SNES. The motif even plays in the hopefully next Kirby final boss theme “CROWNED” so try to look out for that! “Under My Control” is the first phase of the final boss theme in Return to Dreamland. There are a lot of different themes and motifs seemingly mixed in, tho not confirmed really. It’s a fast paced banger, as the second phase is a little more grandiose. You’re right on the money, it’s introducing the final boss, as there are two phases. Can’t wait for more Kirby songs as always

To answer your question, I think two very good picks for a "first" kirby game would probably be Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Or Return to Dreamland Deluxe. Forgotten Land is a very new direction to Kirby, being it's first fully 3D game - and is an amazing start for everyone as it brings in a lot of new while keeping the best parts of the old. Return To Dreamland Deluxe is actually a switch remaster of the original Wii game, but is also an excellent choice if you're going for the typical style of Kirby. Plenty of unique (and extremely fun) abilities to try, amazing music - fantastic story (which has even more to it in this remaster). This game is a fan favourite in general, but the remaster made it even better! I also wanted to say as orchestras was brought up - that Kirby has had many throughout the years! Most notably the one for its 25th anniversary, and it's 30th. Both can be found around online, so maybe you can give them a listen sometime! The 30th is definitely my favourite though...I find myself amazed at how well they capture the game's tracks so faithfully (especially the boss themes.. They've got a whole medley for that one) and it's just. Genuinely too good...I get goosebumps just from listening to them each time. 😅

It uses a different gameplay style from most of the game up to that point, so it has a bit of a district feeling compared to most other tracks in the game. “Welcome Your New Overlord”/“Under My Control” is the track for the first part of the final boss fight itself. The track for the second half “CROWNED” is probably more famous, but for most of the time I’ve been a fan of the series I have actually preferred the first phase instead.

For a first Kirby game, I think either Return to Dreamland (Switch remake) or Forbidden Land is the way to go. Kirby has its roots in being a 2D platformer, which you’ll get with Return to Dreamland, and I think it represents the overall series very well. But Forbidden Land also plays fantastically and I am very keen on how it evolves the series going into full 3D for the first time, without straying from what made the series so beloved. Though honestly, you almost can't go wrong with any core Kirby game, this series's quality is remarkably consistent and most will have a hard time picking out an actively bad game from the core series. There's also a slew of experimental spin-offs besides that, though your mileage may vary a bit more there, admittedly.

Kirby is a pretty reliable series to have a good soundtrack. Even nowadays when Mario and Metroid isn't really doing it for me. I was so disappointed by Super Mario Odyssey and Super Mario Bros Wonder. They have good songs, but not that many and not as good as Galaxy for example. Metroid Dread's soundtrack just bored me. They could've at least put Kraid's lair into if the bring back Kraid after such a long time. I don't care for the new songs in Samus Returns either. Another one on the Switch: Yoshi's Crafted World. That soundtrack sucks so much. When I play the factory level, I always play factory level themes from Kirby and DK games lol. So I was very happy when Kirby and the forgotten land had such an amazing soundtrack. I'm not a fan of the final boss theme (in that regard Star dream is my favourite) but compared to how little they remix in that game, it's incredible how many awesome songs there are. Also the brought back the Wii game which alread had a great soundtrack and changed some at the ending and added new ones for the new modes. So that's one aspect why I'm always excited for a new Kirby announcement. You never know what an awesome soundtrack you will get.
