Hi Kirby. Really enjoy these videos and have been following The Hangar Project for a few months now. Having bought some cheaper shoes recently I have taken the plunge now and ordered a pair of Allen Edmonds. A pair of Carlyles in dark chilli are winging their way to Glasgow Scotland as we speak. I plan to use this method for their first shine. However, would you recommend a coat of dubbin prior to beginning this shine? Also what pigmented saphire creams would you recommend for polishing the dark chilli finish? many thanks, craig.

Kirby Allison I noticed that you are not applying the mirror wax/water carefully. Is it because you are concerned about time, or it is just you ? The unevenness is so noticeable on the left shoe, left side of the toe cap.

The most impressive thing of this video is Kirby does all of this without getting any pigment on his ungloved fingers, jacket, tie, or white shirt.

I couldn't agree more... most men are intimidated by dressing well because they think it is difficult. Other menswear channels geek out about this and that. But the reality is that if you invest in high-quality, classic clothing, there are few combinations you pick that wouldn't look great.

22:35 was the most interesting part. A great pair of shoes can totally change how you get treated. I have many leather boots from Taft. I use leather wipes to keep it clean. I tried polishing one of them and the color of the shoe changed quite a bit later on, I hated that. Some of my shoes also have a color gradient so I am unable to use a polish on them. I never used polish on the other boots, just cleaned them with leather wipes. I will surely get the Saphir Renovateur

I use a slightly different polishing method, but I love your videos on the subject. Polishing one's shoes is undeniably a meditative, enjoyable activity. My wife thinks I'm crazy, but the results speak for themselves. On an unrelated note: Consider shirt collars with a less extreme spread when you wear jackets like that. It's a detail most will miss, but I think it looks better when the angle of the collar runs parallel to the angle of the seam of the lapel.
@kirbyallison7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I about to start experimenting with some different spreads. I have a close friend that is really pushing me for a more narrow collar.

Wow, so much work and effort. I have mainly trickers shoes but I just use the normal kiwi wax from the supermarket. It seems to do a good job but maybe I need to be looking after my shoes more? For some reason I’m up at 4.30, think I’ll go watch the telly and shine all my shoes!
@Patrick_B687-37 жыл бұрын
If you ever try the Saphir products, you'll toss all that Kiwi straight in the bin.
@kirbyallison7 жыл бұрын
Kiwi is really not a quality product, IMHO. Just smell it - it smells toxic. The fundamental problem with Kiwi is that it uses a petroleum-based solvent and very cheap waxes. The petroleum-based solvent will degrade the leather over time and the cheap waxes just don't hold a shine for very long. The proof is in the pudding. Trying the Saphir Medaille d'Or shoe polish is all you need to see the difference, which is immediately evident.
@JosesGarage1013 жыл бұрын
Fantastic tutorial!!! Do you have a video on how to polish black dress shoes to a super black result?
@umairamin1229 Жыл бұрын
According to the AE website, the park and fifth avenues are made out of shell cordovan. I read somewhere that shell cordovan doesn’t have open pores the same way calfskin does, therefore, it doesn’t accept pigment in the same way. Is this baseless? Of course, I’m impressed by the outcome in the video and inclined to think that shell cordovan equally benefits from care and is capable of achieving a high gloss finish.

@ianmedium7 жыл бұрын
Amazing, it’s like you added $400 worth of extra quality to the leather, they look more like bespoke leather now! Kirby, do you ever treat the arch section of the leather sole and also where the heal side on that part. I always do once a month as I find it helps with any potential cracking that can occur if one is caught out in a rain show and then the leather dries.
@kirbyallison7 жыл бұрын
Thanks, ianmedium! Even I'm impressed at how much of a difference a good polish makes! And, yes, the waxes help protect the leather from the elements.

Kirby, thanks as always, but I managed to mess up pretty bad. Using all saphir and Hanger Project materials, everything you’re using in the video, I took off some finish of my new AEs during the mirror shine process. My stomach flipped over. I stopped applied some cream polish and buffed it but you can still see the blemish I left. So after the renovateur, cream polish and pate de luxe wax, I started with a little water on the high shine chamois, and a light coat of mirror gloss. Looked good so I went for another coat. More water and more mirror gloss. Then hell broke loose. I don’t know if I had too much water or not enough, didn’t seem like too much wax, but the finish started to come off of the shoe, not just the mirror shine. 1) Has anything like this ever happened to you 2) what did I do wrong and how can I make sure it doesn’t happen again? I have used the mirror technique from you earlier video with great success on a few other pairs. It’s much like this but a little different. I was surprised at how using the same products turned so wrong so fast.
