Sometimes he would substitute the one and five chords with double stops on the 1st and 3rd strings, barring the fret. But instead of playing a five chord, he would play the double stop in the two position, using the common note, which is believe is five of five, as the dominant chord. These were often slid up a whole step and then backed into. Many other blues guys used this, such as Johnny Winter. It can also be heard on the Allman Brothers version of Stormy Monday.
