Toyota almost killed off the 4Runner around the same time due to lack of sales. They held on and have since sold very well. Too bad Nissan killed it off just before it got trendy. Ironically I think Toyota killed the FJ in the US after 2014 which would have sold well had they held out another year or two.

I agree with the thought that the Xterra should have never been dropped. Nissan needs a more affordable off-road capable SUV. The Armada is now too expensive for the average off-road fan. An Xterra with the 310hp 3.8 liter V6 would be perfect for me. Especially with 4WD(part-time or full-time).

Bringing back the Xterra seems like such a no brainer. The original Xterra was a breath of fresh air in an era when SUV’s started getting really high end and expensive. It provided a value proposition being a more utilitarian, lifestyle vehicle. It looked great, it was super simple, mechanically and borrowed a lot from the Frontier of the era, which was also kind of cool being the first small truck with a crew cab in the states. That philosophy now, especially with the pushback of buyers either the new gen turbo 4’s and hybrids is a great opening to steal done market share from the new 4Runner. A naturally aspirated V6 will make it unique in a sea of turbo 4’s. And I agree, that refreshed 1st gen look great and would be a good reference for styling cues. It mimicked the original Land Rover Discovery with the raised roof but had its own look.

A descendant of the XTerra has been running for quite some time in other regions of the world. Just not the United States. This vehicles is called... Drum roll pls...the Nissan Terra. This is a ladder frame SUV based of the Nissan Navarra platform, which you remember was once the Frontier in the US and which the XTerra is based from. The Nissan Terra is a PPV (Pickup Platform Vehicle) targeting the other popular PPVs such as the Toyota Fortuner (based of the HiLux), the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport (based off the L200), the Isuzu Mu-X (based of the D-Max) and the Ford Everest (based off the Ranger). If you remember the Pajero Sport, also known as the Montero Sport, only the first gen appeared in the US but not the second and third gen. Each of these PPVs alone are considered Forbidden Fruit to the US.

Was kinda amazing it got the real truck frame and the 4.0 for the “third” gen. People do solid axle swaps to make them true jeep competitors off-road. Seems to make the most sense when thinking about it as not-a-jeep because it has better reliability and a solid roof with no need for sportbars or speakers hanging from the headliner.

Got a 12 Murano and modified it out with wheels, sport bumpers and roofrack delete. I gotta a different vision for a future Xterra though: I know Nissan'd never do this, but imagine they did a 3 different platform Xterra; 1) your base 2) an off-road, and 3) street! Base (stripped down which could be built up per the customer). Off-road (more like the one we all remember, roofrack, towhitch, dirt tires etc.) Street (lowered with sport wheels and lowpro tires, pano roof, leather etc....) All with a v6 engine vs these new hybrid 4s! This would spread across more markets! Just my thoughts, I know Nissan would never do anything like this though! ✌🏽❤✊🏽

The second generation was FAR superior to the first. I've driven my 2008 over 165K miles, with a lot of that off-road. It's been relegated to my winter snow driver over the last couple of years, else I'd have even more trouble free miles on it. I mostly commute with my motorcycle. Off-road it is near perfect, and very very reliable, with the right modifications. What I would love to see is the AWD, automatic 4WD system that my wife's 2012 had. My Xterra has the locking rear differential, and the front differential from an Armada / Titan with V-8 Pathfinder half-shafts. Anyway, shift on the fly 4WD is great, but like I said, I'd love to have the exact same automatic 4WD system that the Armada had.
