If you're interested in these types of vertical-axis windmills, be sure to search a bit for: "Savonius wind turbine". This will show you examples of similar turbine designs, which can you even make as a small science project using e.g. a Pringles tube or a (a bit more "serious") using a small section of rainwater pipe. :) Note: make sure you stay safe though! When there are high wind speeds. Under high load (and when no braking/safety mechanism is present) parts can go flying when a wind turbine hasn't been designed/constructed properly.

Savonius (vertical axle) windmills are notoriously ineffective compared to the propeller style ones. They were invented a hundred years ago and there is a reason why they are not widely used. It would have been interesting to get proper test results for this design, but any claim that this design is more efficient than what is producing 99.9999% of today's wind energy production should be taken with a very large spoon of salt.
@BurninVinyl3 жыл бұрын
@@tzenophile Depends what you call effective. The propeller ones are installed in a certain position because they know, they studied and have enough data to know where can be efficient. This instead is made to be multi-purpose. By try and error like this fella did, he knows why he choose this instead of the modern one.
@tzenophile3 жыл бұрын
@@BurninVinyl I'm sorry, but no, this does not depend on my personal definition of 'effective'. If you want to claim that I'm wrong, please present a single piece of evidence that vertical axis windmills are competitively efficient. They are not. They look cool, which is why people want to believe in them, but they are only used in applications where output is not important, e.g. low-power sensors. If EZGro wants to claim that this is as good as horizontal axis windmills, they have to give us the data. This is pure physics; simple calculations and measurements. Why do you think they don't? It would have been seen as a major breakthrough if they could. But no.

Systemic racism so deeply ingrained in our nation's fabric that even now a tremendous portion of the citizens can't even bear to consider whether it happened? Let alone to do anything about it. That is far less the the cost of the food that is produced. We will get about 10 lbs of food per week per tower when in production. We have a small farm stand at the curb and will sell about 400 lbs of tomatoes a week at $2 a pound. We grow other crops as well but tomatoes are in high demand here so we have 40 towers of tomatoes.

Definitely a good option for places with no access to organic soil. 12:30 , no wind turbines are made on the basis of alternator, they are basically some form of BLDC or PMSM which internally operates just like a 3 phase AC induction motor. PMSM motors are about as efficient as you can get.
@Youchubeswindon2 жыл бұрын
Stop being so pedantic. Everyone who understands what he built knows that alternator is the wrong terminology, but for the inexperienced or lay person this video was directed to, alternator as an understandable word from your car as being able to generate electricity from the rotational momentum and so was the correct word to use. Who when starting diy-ing wind turbines didn't make theirs a hacked together HAWT with a car alternator. Worked fine until we all understood why it wasn't great.

Amazing content! What an incredible system. Great for producing commercial quantities, or long term production on a homestead. Long term, cause the high cost of the system makes the food too expensive in small quantities unless amortised over a long time. Which is why Larry emphasises how durable it it is. But as the cost of natural resources increases, the system becomes more feasible. And people can grow what they need locally on very small/urban plots. I presume (hope) those plastics are made from recycled materials. The turbines look very interesting!

I love his energy, passion and innovation. His Tiny Farm idea, if added to a fish aquaculture component could go a long way in small communities to allay any food “insecurity”. I would put one of the power systems on my cabin, but I have not gotten response when trying to contact him, however. Hoping it is just because they are super busy.

I think I like this system the best. For me, it has the best balance between a natural food forest and maximizing the yield with the amount of effort I’d want to apply along with the circulation of the system and energy creation use/resupply. I love it. I’d love to create a vertical hydroponics system coupled with a small animal farm on about 50-100 acres here in Oklahoma.

This guy seems great and I love what he’s doing. However as someone with two masters degrees in engineering and having written a thesis on small wind turbine design I can confirm that what this guy is saying is almost completely wrong. There are many reasons horizontal axis is more efficient but the main one is you get much higher rpm which leads to more efficient generation of electricity. Additionally building those vertical turbines so close together will significantly reduce efficiency as will the version with solar panels on top. General rule of thumb is you want the turbine away from any other objects to more consistant wind speed. He is correct that vertical axis turbines deal better with wind direction changing but by putting them all next to each other this advantage is completely lost. Imagine when the wind direction changes and blows end on to those turbines, the ones at the back would get almost no wind. Changing wind direction is not the main problem when optimising wind turbines. Putting wind turbines by roadsides is often a terrible idea. What is generating that wind? Cars. They are generating it by burning petroleum. Putting turbines here means that cars are burning more fuel on this road section because there will be more drag on the cars... Given that he is using the power to pump water this is an ideal situation for solar power, pumping water up and storing it high is one of the most efficient and environmentally friendly ways of storing power. This is what hydro dams to store power, they pump water back up. If he raised those tanks up a few meters and made them bigger he could just pump water when it’s sunny and let it gravity feed back down. It would be a much cheaper setup and more reliable than using those wind turbines.

He is on the same level of bs with the towers as well. He claims he invented things he did not. He claims that most tower-system doesn't circulate the water and that is a plain lie. I've never come across a system that did not and I've been focusing on hydroponics for the last 6-7 years. He's prices are sky-high on his webshop btw so about not making money...
@mikaelohman98393 жыл бұрын
Also, the % of how much water that is not wasted is not impressive at all. That is the general standard of a hydroponic system and has been like that even when US army made a setup during ww2. The pots are just a joke when it comes to the arguments he has. He makes a strawman out of other products failing. Holland is the 2nd largest exporter of food. They got gigantic greenhouses and none of them uses anything like his pots. So, they are using a less good product then? The experts in this field knows less than this guy? No. He lying. Just plain lies. If he would argue that "my pots are a bit better than most commercial systems if you want to grow at home" then he is almost in the ballpark for telling the truth. That is until you see that the prices he has for this pots are like 500% profit margin... And when it comes to the turbines, then have a look at the company called "Capture Mobility". They made the turbine like 2011, but this guy... I just hate to see people like this guy. The comments in here shows how unaware people are in this fields. Both power and agriculture. There are lots of products out there that are better than what this guy is making. It's also not hard to grow tomato's. Plenty of youtube channels that shows you how to do it. Just look for someone who is in your climate zone if you want to grow out doors.

@@shelleynobleart Except that they were invented by Savonius in the 1920s, and are not as efficient as the classic horizontal axis design. That is why they are not used, except for cases where output/efficiency does not matter. I thought they looked cool too, but then I started digging around. . .

@lorenzo42p3 жыл бұрын
yea, really. hundreds of watts from each of those, maybe in the peak of a hurricane. they're not high production turbines. the classic style is used much more often because it works. even if the turbine has to turn to face into the wind, that's not hurting production so much as it is auto tuning the production and getting the most out of it. these vertical ones on the other hand, they're good because wind can come in from any direction, but when they're lined up like he has them... well, you've ruined the only benefit that style of turbine has.
