Rather, it traded with them. Archeological sites a thousand years old in the Philippines are filled with Chinese wares, attesting to the wealth and prosperity that China brought to other peoples, near and far. When the Spaniards came to the Philippines in the 1500s, they found many Chinese people - but only merchants and fishermen. No military. The only military was the Spaniards, who conquered the peoples of the Philippines - something China never did or tried to do.

Great observation and wisdom about the Chinese long history of culture. The Chinese in its weakest has pushed the US south in the Korean War, thus enjoyed some 30 years of peace, until the Vietnamese War, basically a repetition of the Korean War, mind you I was on the ground this time in Indo China. Again another 30 years with no sight of the US yelling at its front yard. This time the US is much weakened, and picks a gang fight, as not possible to find any of its crony ally brave enough to be a proxy, so has to do the fight itself. But, the US is again a paper tiger, now comes up with non combat war, ranging from containment to sanctions. China is not just another Germany, Japan nor Germany, it chooses its own tactics - ignore the US, focus on developments, improve on itself. Mates, little Kim shook hands with dotted Trump, as no nation can survive any nuke war. In history, all empires collapse because of failed financials. These include the Roman, the Mongilian and the British empires. The US hegemony is no exception - it needs an annual fresh debt of USD3 trillions - from annual fiscal deficit and interest expenses. BTW, its defense budget is only a small amount of USD0.9 trillion, which is even smaller than its annual interest expenses of USD1.0 trillion. The latter figure grows much faster than the former, as the USD logs another USD3.0 trillion of new debts to its present level of USD35 trillions. Mates, the increase in productivity of the US falls much behind than the increase in debt. Now, for you to check when the US will break.

I disagree with Mahbubani that the difficulties between the US and China are for understandable reasons. They're not. If the US really had problems with China's authoritarian government, communism, human rights, cheap labor supposedly taking jobs, then why did the US buy trillions worth of products from China for the past 40 years and sell its Buicks, iPhones and Teslas there? Heck, why did it ake iPhones there in the first place? Why is it only now trying to 'decouple' from China and imposing all manner of sanctions - chips, electronics, and now social media - on China? Because China is now on the verge of eclipsing the US at least in aggregate terms. It's like the 80s with Japan all over again, except this time it's China. It's not its 'authoritarianism' and it's not the CCP - we were fine with those things when wages were a dollar a day, when we were essentially exploiting their workers. Now that we can't do that anymore, we are crying foul.

Mahbubani is usually worth listening to, but when it comes down to percentages, you might as well say that only 18% of the world's population lives in China, while 82% lives outside China. You cannot just lump all people living outside the west into one category. Example: I am pretty sure that the 18% living in China views China more favorably than the 18% living in India....

Former Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Kwan Yew have never lived in China or US, but he knew political systems and the lives of people in those countries. Prof Mahbubani has never lived in China either, he only got the information via the internet so he knew nothing about China. The 4000 year civilization of China only exists in China via some traditions that Chinese people follow, for examples the cuisines, the arts, etc but the philosophy is purely Communism. The people that maintain the Chinese traditions are Taiwanese, not the China Government. Mahbubani did not have any one in his family got persecuted by Communist, so he did not know nothing.
