For a while I have been messing around with a film that dad shot in Hamburg around 1966. He was travelling with International Help for Children returning a group of refugees who had just enjoyed a six week holiday in the U.K.
Dad took his cine camera everywhere so naturally he came back with a few rolls of film and made a short movie he called 'CONTRASTS' which examined the difference between Hamburg by day and by night.
I decided to re-edit the piece removing deteriorated splices, scratches and other faults then reworking all the transitions. I had to abandon the soundtrack as the bits and pieces I had to remove meant there were gaps in his original music. Sad, but as I was working from a DVD recording of the film the audio was lonked to the visuals and I could not separate them (leastways, not with my basic programme)
While I was pondering on what to use instead I was reminded of an album made by a very dear friend of mind, who sadly passed away a few years ago and whose birthday would have been a at the time I was making the film. Friends posted songs on Facebook which prompted me to revisit the record. Two tracks jumped out at me, Kiss the Day Goodbye, and City Song. Both were connected in some way with the images and concept in Dad's original film and both are wonderful tunes. It was also a great way to combine my tribute to Dad with a tribute to Sylv, known to all as 'Mum'. She was a joyful, caring, passionate and inspiring lady who sings on these songs along with Terry and John Kaliski who made up the group, Stained Glass. The tracks are taken from their only album, Open Road.
The music and visuals are not synchronised as I did not wish to lose the integrity of Dad's original editing. I hope this does not detract from the overall effect.
I do not own the copyright to these songs but they are not included for financial gain, purely for entertainment and to bring this wonderful music to a wider audience.
