It's probably gonna be overlooked with everything else that happened, but can we take a minute to appreciate the woman's acting from the opening? You can see terror in her eyes and body language as she realizes, "oh no, it's already too late."

I also liked how the officer wasn't played as a stereotypical thug. He showed respect to the scientist and listened to her. There were never any demands on getting an answer he thought sounded better. He also firmly told the lab assistant not to offer an opinion at that particular moment, only because he wanted a fresh pair of expert eyes on the slides.

Mary, there is a documentary series titled "Life after People" which shows how nature grows back and reclaims cities if humans suddenly disappeared. It is quite eerie and, in its own way, beautiful. I recommend checking out a couple of episodes if you are interested how modern landmarks and cities would look over decades and centuries without human maintenance.

I wouldn't say completely unrelated. There is a nice juxtaposition of a pre-apocalypse world with no hope of a cure with a post-apocalypse world that has a small glimmer of hope with Ellie's immunity

Jakarta is the home for the largest flour mill in the world and was the cause of the spread of the infection. 24 September 2003 is two days before Joel's Birthday and the day of the outbreak in the USA. If you noticed in the first episode Saraha, Joel and his brother didn't eat any flour base products. Probably what spared them from being infected.

That kiss is actually super heartbreaking (and gross, like really gross), because it clearly wasn't the kiss Tess wanted. "I never ask you for anything, not to feel the way I felt...", that's what she says to Joel just before he leaves with Ellie. And there's that moment where they stare at each other, close enough that maybe Joel will give her a farewell kiss...but then he leaves her. Rather than a kiss of life, she gets a literal kiss of death :(
@miloandot

@@miloandot How's about we chill with the sarcasm, my guy? I never said Joel and Tess SHOULD'VE kissed, obviously they don't because she is infected, but because of their body language and dialogue, it seems like they WANTED to. There's clearly some unaddressed feelings between them, at least for Tess to Joel, so I just think it's an interesting and tragic moment that an Infected 'kisses' her when she almost certainly wanted Joel to kiss her before she died.

I don't know if every episode will have a prologue scene, but both episodes' prologues have been excellent so far. The Jakarta scene was very well made with excellent acting from both scientist and soldier. Although we were probably expecting the cadaver to suddenly come back to life during examination, it didn't happen because of the bullet wound in the head. Ellie's sassy dialogue is hilarious. Not sure I would want to share an apocalypse with a teen. Maybe we will see a flashback of Joel & Tess later in the show.

I've been digging the changes they made for adaptation. The hive mind idea, lack of spores, more science behind the actual infection, Craig and Neil have done an amazing job. That final scene with Tess and Joel was so well done too, the series did a better job of fleshing out that relationship with just a couple added moments and bits of dialogue. I'm gonna be very curious to see Bill and Frank explored more, I think Tess will already be back for at least one flashback

The Jakarta segment was perfectly done. The fear in the eyes of a stoic military general barely holding it together. An expert in the field who breaks down crying despite her knowledge and wisdom. It really hammers in how hopeless the situation was.

For example, biscuit dough.

The one thing im a little nit picky about is that Mali statistically is the hottest place on Earth in West Africa (Hottest country not place) so surely the fungi would of mutated over there rather than Indonesia? A little nit pick but still, i do wonder if it originated in Indonesia or every episode the openings give us more clues to the origin of it
@ChibiHoshiDragon
@ChibiHoshiDragon Жыл бұрын
Hot yes, but that makes ZERO sense Kind of like: There is more oxygen in the air than in water. If the rise in Oxygen causes a mutation in a sea creature, wouldn't it be better to make the mutation occur on land instead? To MUTATE something that something must first BE there. Ophiocordyceps unilateralis is not a natural problem in Mali. It IS part of the environment in Indonesia.
@ZhangK71
@ZhangK71 Жыл бұрын
What?? That’s like saying the Pacific Northwest is statistically the most suitable region in the world for human physiology to develop, so surely humanity would’ve evolved there? Well, it isn’t. And East Africa is where humans came from, because it was good enough of a place. Yeah, sure, if the fungus had mutated in a more successful spawning point, maybe even less people would’ve survived up till now, or the fungus would’ve been 100% successful in wiping out humanity… But it didn’t. Not to mention Mali is also nearly one of the driest countries in the world where you’re barely going to find mold growing on the sidewalk, let alone cordyceps growing fruiting bodies all over the city. Fungi need moderate warmth-not excessive heat-and humidity to survive. All this is kind of moot, though, since the video game *SPOILER ALERT* has South America being the origin of the fungus, not Indonesia, so I’m still not even quite sure if the Indonesia scene was just people eating imported grain from South America.

The way I remember the game, the first few times you run into clickers, your guns/ammo aren't really powerful enough to "one shot" them. You have to upgrade a few times before that's possible. But you can sneak up on them and stab them in the head and kill them instantly. They are terrifying in the game because once they are aware of you, stabbing them to death isn't really an option. They are ridiculously strong and just bat away any melee attacks and then bite you.

I enjoyed this reaction but thought I could contribute something! Early on you asked what might happen if an infected bit a frog or a duck. Cordyceps is actually a genus of fungi. There are hundreds of species of Cordyceps. Each species of Cordyceps can only infect one specific species of insect. For example - Ophiocordyceps unilateralis infects ants of the Camponotini type. And -ONLY- ants of this type. It could not infect ants outside this type. To compare it to humans - this pathogen, if it follows the existing profile set by Cordyceps in general, could infect human beings but could not infect chimpanzees or orangutans. So, if it follows these rules, the infected could not infect other mammals.

Tess saying "I never ask you for anything, not to feel the way I felt..." is even more sad when you think about ep 1... where Joel took those pills and slept, dreaming about Tess coming in and lying down beside him, which to me confirms that he was actually in love with her (or felt a deep connection at least), perhaps feeling EXACTLY the way she felt. But letting her come close, fully feel those feelings... too dangerous for his heart, like emotional survival. The only reason he has been able to keep living this life is by numbing himself, in more ways than one

Joel wasn't dreaming about Tess laying down with him; she actually did come in and lay down with him. When he laid down, you could hear Sarah's breathing and Tommy's voice - he was most likely dreaming of Sarah. After Sarah's death and everything he's been through; he's shut down emotionally; he can't allow himself to feel again because of Sarah. The only emotion we see in this scene is the look of despair when Tess said "Save who you can save." Tess loved him but Joel couldn't allow himself to reciprocate. So tragic and on point with his character.

I loved this episode! That scene with the clickers was so intense and scary! It’s so interesting to see the differences between the show and the game. They made really smart choices in my opinion. That scene at the end with Tess did hit me harder in the game, but I actually think it makes more sense the way they did it in the show. It’s funny, because the scene with Sarah in episode one hit me harder in the show than the game. Anyways, loving the show!

It was hard to watch the scientist put her fingers in that mouth. I was waiting for the jump scare as well.

I felt like in the game her death was a sacrifice, but she was just gunned down after killing two guards. I think in the show her sacrifice was more badass, because she took down an entire building of infected. I honestly like the show's version of her death more. The show does a better job fleshing out the science of the fungus and infection.

In the game there’s a news article talking about infected crops, so I’m glad they explored it a bit, makes this infection more realistic, it’s not only bites, it’s infected food and spores too.

I want to know who came up with the idea of an Infected french-kissing Tess to her death and why. That was so gross, yet cool, very weird.
