I'm not 100% that they're right. She was still operating the lighter as an act of aggression towards them so if the infection had control over her it was doing a shitty job. I thought she stood her ground because she knew she was done regardless, she had to stay where she was to get the lighter in the kerosene and grenades and if she'd panicked and run away there's no way you'd get that Zippo lighter to work on the run. I thought she faced the horror because she knew it wouldn't last more than a few seconds and then it would all be over and she could die knowing she'd done her part to potentially save the world
@sarcasticwanderer1148

@A small amount of peas A fair theory. I'm pretty sure it was the infection taking hold. Her hands were already shaking and the infection was at her neck which should have her turn in under 20 minutes hence why she was rushing to the state building after she was bitten. I figure it's like she stated earlier that the infected are "more connected than you know" I think she wasn't swarmed because the infected recognized the cordyceps in her taking hold and was speeding up the process. Also she slowed down on the lighter flicking almost as if she was giving up.

@@sarcasticwanderer1148 Weirdly maybe both theories are right (or none of em 😂 ) Maybe the Cordyceps was in the process of taking control of her but not quite all of her yet, the stalker who walked up to deliver undoubtedly the grossest French kiss of all time was probably there to finish the job or at least quicken it and right before it completely took her in her last act of humanity she got that lighter to work and gave Joel and Ellie a chance. Great scene regardless

Remember, Tess was infected and the tendrils were starting to take hold. Starting to control her, control her mind and body. That is why she could not move well and also why the infected runner didn't run fast straight at her. He walked up to her. She couldn't move. They were drawn to each other. She was going to be connected with all of them through that runner and a funghis tendrils. She couldn't move her head out of the way. She only had enough brain power to try and light that lighter. I bet she couldn't even bend over to light the ground.

She wasnt trying to get away, she was making a suicide stand, that was the whole point of the scene. The showrunners said the early stage infected arent aggressive if they don't have to be. The stalker didnt react aggressively when it noticed her bc she wasnt trying to get away, she wasnt trying to get away bc she was deliberately making a last stand to kill the infected and herself, and the stalker attempted to deliver the infection the most efficient way possible. If she fought back then maybe it would beat the shit out of her, maybe she drops the lighter, and then she dies for nothing.
@nickvanderlinden7165
@nickvanderlinden7165 Жыл бұрын
The reason why tess didn't do anything is probably because the cordysepse took control at that point. And was instructing her to stand still and open her mouth so that the "stalker" not clicker could push the infection further. Imagine being trapped in your own body like that. That is terrifying.

@cantgetriight

My theory was that the cordyceps wants the host to be as healthy as possible(to preserve the host's body) so it was the path of least resistance to just spread from directly inserting the tendrils into her mouth. At that point Tess had already decided to sacrifice herself, so there was no need for a violent transmission like we saw with everyone in the first episode. Ripping the host into pieces isn't conducing to spreading the fungi at max potential.

@@linny_456 I'm with you. Its more apparent in the game but Tess is a mission focus type person. Her mission was the lighter. She was already infected so there was literally no reason to try and infect her more. Also, stalkers don't really need a reason to be aggressive. They're the definition of on-sight so its more likely there would need to be a reason why it wasn't actively attacking her. I think it recognized she was infected and was attempting to link her infection to the hive mind which it showed how that works literally a minute or two before when Joel killed the stalker. Who the fuck really knows though.

According to the showrunners, Tess didn't resist becoming "even more" infected at the end, this is why that infected slowly approached and kissed her, speeding up the infection. They specifically stated that if she ran or resisted, they would have swarmed and tore her apart. So, in her last minutes, she spared herself from an even more grusome and horrifying death. The last bit of her that remained human, managed to set the place ablaze, as the last remnants of her humanity flickered out.

If anyone was still doubting after last week, their doubts should be gone by this week. This show is consistently making the right decisions on when to change things and when to directly adapt it frame for frame and line for line from the game. The acting is on point, the cinematography is on point, Joel and Ellie feel like Joel and Ellie, the music is great, the clickers are PERFECT, and there's so many little nods to the game like when Joel tips up the bookcase that had been holding the door.

There was a lot to love in this episode, but a few issues which shouldn't have made the cut: - The intro in indonesia is completely unbelievable; how on earth the prof would advice bombing the city after just looking at a body and hearing about one story? - The death of Tess; the weird kiss was gross... why do that? - The last scene was terribly acted. Wasn't fond of the choice of actor for Ellie, it can work depending on the scenes, but overall it does not. I have no idea how people can defend her acting. And in this last scene it is the filmmakers fault, as they should simply haven't added this cut.

@@MN-vz8qm it makes sense. The cordyceps have the ability to mind control. That's what made tess not move and open her mouth. She just had enough strength to operate the lighter. My take on the fungi kiss lol is that at that point the only task Tess was trying to accomplish was to get that lighter going. If she tried to stop the creepy fungi dude, she may have dropped it. And maybe since she was infected, she was already becoming influenced by the fungi and couldn’t resist? Anyway, the last human part was to blow that place up. It was pretty gross. But she won in the end!

From the hints in the game it was apparent that Joel and Tess were together as partners in crime for years. Both of them have done some baaaaaad things in the intervening 20 years. In the game and in this episode it suggests that Tess, at least, want to take this one last chance to do something good, wants 'one win'. Like others have said, by the time the stalker 'kissed' her, Tess was barely in control of her body and probably used her last reserves of free will to flick the lighter rather than try to escape.

@What We Watchin'?!, 2:45 Did you catch that this moment, 8/24, takes two days before Joel's story? Indonesia didn't do as the professor suggested, but it probably didn't matter much in the end, as flour and grain from the country was already on store shelves and homes globally--Nana Adler wasn't bitten, but force fed contaminated biscuits and cookies. We heard about the civil unrest in Jakarta on Joel's birthday, 8/26, so Jakarta was going through it before they finally started bombing, if they were even able to ='( 10:29 "Can they feel?" I'm going to guess, no. Cordyceps have a parasitic relationship with their human hosts--the host is a vehicle and food source; the human body is warm and 60% floods, which is the ideal conditions for Cordyceps to thrive. Cordyceps DO NOT kill their hosts--the infected are still alive--they wall off their brains from the nervous system and hijack the host's body. Those that still have eyes and ears are able to see and hear what the Cordyceps are doing, and that's it as they are prisoners in their own bodies. The only way to kill an infected, in the game anyway, is to kill the brain. If the host dies, the body does too. Cordyceps will continue to live as we saw with the woman on the autopsy table in Jakarta, but they are immobile, which explains why the cordyceps reached for the professor; it wanted a mobile host. This is why you'll see people online arguing that the infected aren't zombies, as zombies are reanimated dead bodies, that's not the case here with the infected. They are living humans, who've become prisoners in their own bodies. Yikes! 12:39 We saw her trip with Ellie in the museum, though--she told Ellie to run when she left in the opposite direction. Ellie went to Joel and they fought off a Clicker together. Tess was by herself, and for some reason the Clicker that went after her left her alone and pursued Joel and Ellie. Why? 14:34 If you have the chance, go back and watch the leaving the museum again. Pay attention to Tess' demeanor. Her words and body language gave her infection away. Joel's so worried about Ellie, that he didn't realize what was going on with Tess. Tess was doing her best to keep it together, and not give away what had just happened to her. We see her quicken her step while being a little testy and determined. She knew her time was running short, and as she's a woman of her job she had to finish this one last job. I think it's safe to say that she wanted to get this over with as quickly as possible so that she could have a little time with Joel before the end too ='( 16:02 Cordyceps don't eat people. They have their hosts bite people because they need an entry point into the human body. Orifices work too, but most orifices are protected. 16:47 Why do you think Tess is having a hard time flicking her lighter? I think the answer was shown to us earlier when she hid her hand after trying to show Joel's Ellie's second bite. Tess has the shakes, she's losing her motor functions. The shakes are a sign of diminishing motor functions. Why is this happening? I assume this is because cordyceps build a wall around the rain, cutting it off from the nervous system so that it can hijack the body for itself. Tess knew that she only had minutes left before she would stop being herself, and shut Joel up so she could say and do what she needed to. I bet her lighter is just fine, and that she lacks the control/coordination to flick her lighter in one go. 16:55 Clickers are infected who's skulls split, allowing the cordyceps to fruit (blossom). This fellow here is called a stalker--they are blind between human and cordyceps. We'll have to wait and see if they work as they do in the game, but that might not be the case in the live action as the infected were given names by their actions. Runners run. Stalkers stalk, and Clickers click. Notice how the infect run past Tess? Why'd they do that? Look at the Stalker and Look at Tess. We can see the fear in her eyes, but she's helpless to do anything. The Stalker is drawn to her--it knows she's infected, so there's a good chance the others knew that too. Mercy knew Nana was different. It likely smelled that she was different. The infected likely have a heightened sense of smell too. It must have taken Tess all that she had left in her to keep flicking her lighter. Cordyceps in her wanted that union to take place between her and Stalker. Tess manages to close her eyes before she and the other infected finally meet their end. This death was worse than her game death, but I feel that it was more meaningful. 18:10 Tess told Ellie earlier that the mycelial connection can stretch for miles, but that all depends on the environment. Some areas are drier than others, like the museum. This was another stellar episode. And yes, I agree, that kiss was unnerving. Does MTV still have awards for Best Kiss? I wouldn't be surprised if this makes it in the running, only to make people squirm in their seats one last time, lol.

The reason that Tess didn't move is because the infected are not violent unless you resist them. Fungus's goal is to spread to as many hosts as possible; killing a host or making it so they can't transmit it further by ripping them apart is not useful to what it's trying to do. Through the mouth was the most natural way for the fungus to transfer into Tess. She knew if she moved it would rip her apart and not be able to spark the lighter

A reason I think Tess stayed still in that moment, because if she ran away or alerted even more of them, she may not have the opportunity to ignite the lighter in order to blow the area up. So, she stayed still, no sudden movements, just kept clicking the lighter, and the fungus within the infected went towards the closest opening of her body to infect her even further: Tess' mouth. And, I felt like maybe the person inside the infected was maybe resisting a little, too, which maybe that's why the infected approached her slowly and took a second before succumbing to the fungus' command to infect her. Or, maybe the infected slowly approached for different reasons. But yeah, it does feel a little weird and gross, anyway. I think overall the scene worked well, in any case. :)

From the behind the episode they said Tess was fighting the fungus. That’s why she stood there and got the kiss. But this episode was excellent also. That cold opening in Jakarta was amazing. That professor said “bomb” and I was like girl no. But I get it. Im scared of this cordycep.

Remember the infected and the fungi are connected. She was bit on her neck which takes 15 minutes to turn. She was attracted to the fungi because the fungi in her brain was taking over. She, with her last will to resist, lit the lighter. What a great scene.

Y'all should look up what Cordyceps does to ants ants and stuff in the real world. It is creepy as hell. Cool idea but that make up is nightmare fuel. That clicking noise would make me lose it. I wouldn't last. I think Tess doesn't move partially because panic, and she knows she is supposed to distract, but there is another part since she is infected, that type of fungus infests it's host and use them to spread. I think the infection itself made her not move away because it was already in her enough to make her want to be infected so she could then mature into a full on mushroom person and propagate more.

It was Bill & Frank who played the song on the radio at the end of ep1. You could see "B/F" written at the very top on the piece of paper inside the music encyclopedia. From what I understand, we'll see Bill & Frank in ep3. Though I don't know whether ep3 gonna be cutting to Bill & Frank as a side story/flashback episode or would Joel & Ellie arrive at Bill & Frank's place in ep3. Critics who had advance screener all said it's the best episode in the series and it's DEVASTATING. So be prepared. 😈

I think they said the network went up to a mile. I think she didn't let him "kiss" her, I think the fungus was already controlling parts of her body. Or maybe she was preventing them from tearing her apart before she was able to set the gasoline on fire.

Time to full infection; Neck, face, head 5-15 minutes. Torso, arm, shoulder, hand 2-8 hours. Leg, foot 12-24 hours. Tess was bit in the neck, she was already living on borrowed time, she was already connected.
