Fantastic timing on the layup. I believe that when they're laid wet on wet it's a chemical bond and when you do one layer, dry, then the next layer it's a mechanical bond. Much better and faster in your production line! 36:19 Holy!!! That video segment really gives you the scale of the boat!

Incredible progress in this single episode! You have an impressive group of helpers! I definitely couldn’t wrangler that many friends to work with resin all day. You did a great job organizing them! I definitely think the kit designer should consider redesigning the beam construction to use a foam core rather than a wood structure. All the extra effort to source those continuous wood strips and make the twist seems unnecessary considering wood is now a material commonly found in carbon fiber components. Add to that the risk of rot and it really makes sense to do it with a foam core. That being said you guys did an excellent job making the plans work and the resulting part will work perfectly!
@SailingSVLynx Жыл бұрын
Thanks! As for the wood in the forebeam, it is completely encased in epoxy and then covered in six layers of carbon fiber, also coated in epoxy. There are entire wood and epoxy built boats out there that don't rot after 40 years, so we are not concerned with the wood rotting when it is epoxy coated. One of the materials you can choose to use to build this boat is balsa wood, we just choose foam.

Nice progress. One little glue-up trick that you may have figured out already is to wear several layers of gloves. Then when the top layer gets all sticky and you are starting to spread goop everywhere, you can peel it off for a quick clean pair. Good luck!

Great to see it coming along. Been watching since the beginning. It looks massive, much bigger than I thought it would end up becoming. I wonder if you should have vacuum bagged that beam for increased strength
@SailingSVLynx Жыл бұрын
This kit doesn't require vacuum bagging as it was designed to be built this way. Schionning cats have proven to be overengineered in strength with over 400 built, so we are confidant in the build process they recommend.

Looking good, I was thinking that if the layers start aft to fwd, then your overlaps would have the edges downstream vs upstream to water flow or beaching. Even with a Sacrificial layer of glass, it may wear 😢. We don't want any Delaminations. I noticed during the sanding, the dust blowing, how are the neighbors dealing with the 'Industrial fallout"?
@SailingSVLynx Жыл бұрын
It will all be covered in fairing compound, so the flow won't matter. :) No complaints from the neighbors yet.
@mckenziekeith7434 Жыл бұрын
There is no way it will de-laminate unless someone mixed a bad batch of epoxy (wrong ratio or not mixed enough or something). Especially since they did it all in one go. It all fuses into one solid mass.
@normanboyes49835 ай бұрын
Wow that was a manpower rich work environment.😳 Well done for conducting the orchestra.😀👍⛵️ P.S. Why did you not cut the carbon long enough so it wrapped up to the edges of the canoe?

We cut the basalt to where the plans requested. The boat is designed to keep the weight as low as possible for performance.

It didn’t look as if you did any squeegeeing for the lamination, if you go over the laminations and peel ply with squeegees you will get better consolidation and reduce the amount of resin in the lay up.

Just a couple of points nothing bad and you probably have thought about them anyway, Firstly unlike I am guessing most projects you have lead people have started not knowing how to do it they have developed these skills on the job, Therefore past performance is a poor indicator of future milestones. The work will be completed quicker and to a higher quality also meaning that there will be less remedial work. I am sure you get a lot of suggestions some well thought out and many costing you $$$$ I would like to add one which maybe you just haven't mentioned and are going forward with or decided against. Either way it is cheap and free cost wise. Whilst Mary-Anne (Hope I spelt that right) has the sail-rite out use the scrap material to make covers for your winches capstan outboard motor etc
@SailingSVLynx Жыл бұрын
Sounds like a good plan, thanks.
@dc1544 Жыл бұрын
So why add carbon fiber mat when it has wood in it? I do not understand why you are using any wood for structure.
@mochifanta Жыл бұрын
Carbon fiber necessary for the strength and the wood provides shape and form. Probably reduces the amount of carbon fiber necessary for the structural piece overall. Probably could have used other material, but it relatively cheap and easy to work with.
@SailingSVLynx Жыл бұрын
Something has to give the carbon fiber shape.
@DanielMashonkin Жыл бұрын
I also asked myself but thought it was recommended by designer for some structural purpose. I also know people used styrofoam for internal shape and then completely removed it with the acetone.
@mckenziekeith7434 Жыл бұрын
Yeah for a beam it is hard to believe they even need the wood inside. But notice that they have carbon, then wood, then more carbon. So it is a sandwich construction. The wood is a core material and the carbon is a skin. So that helps make the walls stiffer. LIke I say, I am surprised they need that in a rounded beam like that. I would think because of its shape it wouldn't need a core to make it stiff. But I guess it does. You also do need something to use as a form to lay the carbon on. But the wood looked kind of thick if that was its only purpose.
@SailingSVLynx Жыл бұрын
The wood is both structural and a form for the carbon fiber. I don't know all the engineering behind it, but that's what the plans call for so that's what we built. :)
@Hotzenplotz1 Жыл бұрын
If you put your scale in an clear bag like a freezer bag, it will always stay clean and you just need to change the bag once a while. You didn't mention what advantage you await from the basalt cloth. And I didn't see you vacuum bagging the carbon nor the basalt on the hull. Without the resin ratio will be much to high and using carbon almost doesn't make any sense as the strength of the laminate only works out when the layers are as close as possible. Same for the basalt and any other laminate for an high performance boat. To much resin in the laminate will not only increase the weight but also decrease the strength and without vacuum bagging it's impossible to reach the low resin ratio of less then 40 %. Optimum would be about 33 % but that's only manageable for professionals with preimpragnated cloths.
@SailingSVLynx Жыл бұрын
The plans for this boat do not call for vacuum bagging. We just follow the build plans. That means the hull will be slightly heavier than vacuum bagging, but then again, that is included in the weight of the boat as designed. It does not mean we won't have a seaworthy boat. www.passagemaker.com/technical/mythbuster-infused-hulls-stronger
