HOW TO MIRROR FINISH A BAR
I start with an 80 grit flap disc on my angle grinder then I use my drill with 50 mm round sanding discs . I start with 150 grit then go through the following Grits 240-400-800 Then once I get to the following Grits I use a small squirt of WD-40 1200-1500-2000-2500-3000. The WD40 helps to lubricate the discs and stops the sanding disk binding up with the metal powder . Then after that I use my buffer wheel on my bench grinder to get a perfect mirrored finish on it.

Something a little bit different today where I melt down a whole heap of copper kitchen scourers or Brillo pads whatever they're called? A fantastic bar was produced from these pads and a welcome addition to the shelves. A random orbital sander will help get a nice finish faster. I use a festool one, but cheaper ones will do the same job just as well. The randomness of the sanding stops it biting in so much

ive been thinking on this for a while, but wouldnt the bottom of a bar be smoother if the mold is heated up more? a hotter mold would cool the liquid metal down less, therefore influencing the freeze rate of the liquid metal, making the bottom of the bar smoother. unless the holes are more caused by overall thermal contraction than localized accelerated freezing.

I asked about the SPEED of the pour, if you watch this vid, you see the places where the pour is not evenly spread on the bottom of the mold, it beads up a little, rewatch this vid at half speed where he pours you can see it.

1:12 my family calls those wired dish copper, and you can kept that down. You first need to bunch a whole lot of them though, and preheat them in crucible size. I think you already know that.

A move to a larger shop is a good thing. Make sure every detail is recorded. Its time consuming...but in the end,well worth it. When I built my GarageMahal,It took me weeks in my spare time to move in....and organization is truly NEVER done!

When you take this to the scrap yard are you going to do an hour special and just do a fast forward showing of you sanding everything and the progression of the channel? Also what are you going to buy with the funds you saved I would love to see you build a huge shop or a mansion. But I have been curious of what you are do5 with the goal weight. I do hope that once you reach the goal this coming year you continue to melt for us but if you choose to retire I respect that.
