Hi, I can always pick faults with my work but I'm getting better 😂 bad walls n floors are just part of the job. 😆 After 6yrs i was made redundant by the firm that gave me my apprenticeship, I had to sub in to firms & over the yrs i picked the ones who wanted to do it right, where i could learn n ignored calls from 'that'll do' type companies, Yep your right, do it correct first time then there's no comeback later, I'm fussy about getting it accurate but I've been on sites working n know that there is a limit to how much time can be spent on a particular piece of a job, I've met men who've spent far too much time lets say hanging a door, those men don't last long on site, Ya have to find a balance between speed and quality, I did alright because i was a fast as everyone else but i kept an eye on the detail, now doing my own jobs i still have to try not to spend too much time but isn't easy when it's 'got to be right' I've never advertised & been out of work due to lack of offers of work either for firms or since I've been self-employed so i must be doing something right, . I spoke to Peter in comments, he told me he'd been doing this for 18yrs, I'm curious as to what he did before, It wasn't in the building game i don't think. Thanks James,
@james66096 жыл бұрын
hi i agree totall with you you have to find the right balance but like everything when you find it the work is always much better than a lot of the others out there and i too was self employed before my back issues and like you never had to go a day without work as word of mouth is worth more than any advertising a good job sells another and a happy customer will always be more than pleased to sell your work for your also i think that peter was in photography if memory serves me right before he started woodworking i have subd and clicked notices so hopefully there will be more from you as i said earlier i do like to keep an eye on the kitchen trade as i still have a great interest in the subject regards james

I have enjoyed watching this whole series, I have picked up lots of tips from your methods of work, thanks. I thought it may be worth mentioning a small tip which may assist in your spraying issue regards back spray. I nailed lengths of carpet gripper strips, old wooden type with the little tacks through them, not to batons of wood which are just laid across your saw horses. Just lay your piece to be painted on the top of the small pins in the grip rod. It gives just enough clearance to prevent the piece sticking to the surface and the little pin marks barely leave any trace, which are easily sanded out. An inexpensive tip which may help you out? Thanks again.

Hi The kitchen looks great mate, but you know what I liked most, it was the the finish you got on the cornice, I think it can make or break a job, if you know what I mean!! Mind you, using beach instead of MDF helps a lot!! Wish it was easier to get where I live. What was the paint you used on this job again, and I got to start spraying my stuff yours looks ACE 👍👍👍👍👍
@Gidjoiner4 жыл бұрын
Yeah the the beech is 100% better than MDF, If you're going to put time n money into a good finish you want a material which will last, The paint i use is a 2part PU enamel, because it's hard wearing, resistant to household chemicals, dries very fast, sandable in ½hr & is slightly flexible so dents rather than chips, There are many other paints, Pre-Cat enamel is a 1part paint no mixing involved, excess can go back in the tin, it sprays easily & flat, & is a bit cheaper so good to practice with but not very hard wearing, AC enamel is 2part , that's easy to spray but both of these, Pre-cat & AC are 'hard', there's no give in them so with the wood underneath being relatively soft they chip when knocked, whereas the PU dents n doesn't chip so easily 😉 There's some water based paints but i don't use them so don't know much, the temp for them to dry quickly is 20º+, i can't do that in my shed, esp in winter, I get my paint from Symphony coatings & guns from Sprayguns direct, they both will help if you ring them. 👍 www.spraygunsdirect.co.uk/index.php/ symphonycoatings.co.uk/,

Hi, love watching you work, thanks for all the vids. Can I ask you what you use to seal the mdf to stop the paint being absorbed into the grain etc. Do you use a particular sealer or just primer. Which primer and paint do you use to get such a good finish. Thanks
@Gidjoiner3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Thanks & you're welcome 👍 I don't use any sealers, partly because you might get a bad reaction between the different products & it's an unnecessary expense, just put a thinned down coat on first, that soaks in a bit & prepares the wood making the grain stand/swell up, sand that smooth, even if you think you're sanding off the paint the wood underneath will be 'prepped' , the next coats then will go on a lot smoother, (this also works for water based paints/lacquers/varnishes etc..) I use Medite MR MDF (moisture resistant), this has a good flat smooth face & because of the moisture resistance it doesn't swell up as much as reg MDF, also i use solvent based paints that evaporate quickly & don't soak in or swell the wood like water based stuff that sits n takes longer to dry. Beech is good too for not swelling like pine does 👍 I made a vid on how ii prep the board edges which are swell/become prickly the most, kzbin.info/www/bejne/hKeki4yPrNWBjqM

Great video series. End result looks great. Brave colour choice but it looks fantastic. I do wonder why you didn’t make the cabinets yourself considering all the work you have done on the doors and trim? Look forward to seeing more projects that you do. Also I’d be interested to know more about your spray setup. Thanks.
@Gidjoiner6 жыл бұрын
Hi, i love this colour, another kitchen i did a make-over on which inspired this one (pics on Facebook) looks really good, in the right light you can see blues n greens init. These pre-assembled cabinets were new but purchased a few yrs ago & sat in this kitchen waiting to get fitted since, Making cabinets is fairly simple but adds more time therefore money, I can't make units like this for the price, shopping, cutting, lipping edges & assembly all adds up, Spraying I usually use my Devilbiss FLG with a 1.8mm nozzle, 50ltr Bostitch compressor which is just big enough for my work & a filter/regulator set at about 20psi on the wall, some of my other vids have comments where i discuss spraying & paint etc.. but if you want tp know anything specific just ask 😉 Thanks David

You've made a lovely job of that kitchen mate, I'm a fellow joinery so I can appreciate everything that went in to it. I'm curious as to why you made the doors etc? Did the client not like any of the doors that Howdens sell. I suppose it upped the amount that you could earn from the job merry Christmas. 👍🙂
@Gidjoiner5 жыл бұрын
Hi, All options, designs & materials are discussed before but this Kitchen was inspired by another i did, I'll add a link, I made the doors because they wanted them spraying F&B Railings Grey, the doors i could buy were MDF, veneered or just not right to spray, As you prob know the Beech/hardwood makes a nice feeling door, even after it's panted they feel hard/solid, Quite often people come to me because they want something bespoke, something well made & a little different to what others have, this does up the price a little so i try to do the best i can within time n budget. Thanks I hope you had a good holiday too 👍 facebook.com/gid.joiner/media_set?set=a.1652275884858771&type=3

What's your spraying setup and approximately how long from start to finish did it take to make the kitchen?
@Gidjoiner4 жыл бұрын
I have a 50L compressor which is only just big enough, a variety of Gravity fed guns & a wall mounted regulator/filter set at about 20psi 😉👍 The cheaper guns i use sometimes are ANI for about £24, they're good to start with, the black ANI i use sometimes is a bit more £45-ish & the Devilbiss FLG5 is closer to £100 but it's the best & my favourite, This company is good for guns www.spraygunsdirect.co.uk/index.php/ I don't know how long it took, I give a quote n stick to that price unless they change something, so it's up to me to get it done within that time n budget, it always takes longer because things do & i don't want to bodge it for the sake of saving time but I don't charge more, just the quoted price so once i start it gets finished asap to a standard i would accept if it was for me, I stop counting the days, it's done when it's done 😉

HI, My favourite spraygun is a Devilbiss FLG5 1.8mm nozzle, I prefer PU enamel pain, it is a little harder to spray then Pre-Cat & AC but it has a little flexibility to it so doesn't chip so as easy as those others which are hard but brittle & it is resistant to most household chemicals. Hi, I'm not sure, I think it is a combination of - whatever colour you want, any size you want & often off the shelf stuff is either a bit samey or simply doesn't fit, I think people presume correctly that they are getting better quality & something that is a bit more unique, saying that this job was inspired by another kitchen i built which the clients saw pics of on my Facebook page.
