Really useful advice throughout and a great finished product, I hope you charged enough for the work you put in . One thing though would you consider after spending more on beech whether to push the boat out and not use mdf for the shelves and insert because I think with a stain this would have been even better . Was it expense or customer preference to choose that green colour ?

In those tight spaces I use a cardboard template. I get 2 pieces of cardboard, both about 2/3rds the length of the gap. Place one over the other. Pencil scribe both ends. Cut with a pair of scissors & lay them back in place. Move each piece to the scribed ends & sellotape the two pieces together. Perfect template. 👍👍👍

@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Frank 👍 each job is different, solid slips might look ok to begin with but can show through later because the board & slip will move/expand at different amounts, thin edging can then get knocked off. I avoid putting edging on unless it's ply where there's no choice, in that case like the shelves i put a piece with decent thickness on.

Great video, when putting the shelves in could you mark a line all the way around the front frame when you have got it in its final position then remove it and then fit the shelves ? thats what I do makes it a lot easier for me.
@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 4 жыл бұрын
Hi & thanks Ken 👍 yes and no is my answer, putting the shelves in without the front frame fixed in place would be easier and sometimes I have no choice but to do that. I suspect that the frame would need offering up a couple of times to make sure that the shelf is correct? But I quite often put a base in the cupboard which covers up fixings at the bottom of the front frame so the base board would have to go in after the shelves if they were to be fitted before the front frame is fixed in, shelves, fix front frame to the floor, then the base to cover those fixings? Once I fix the front frame in I'm reluctant to remove it to fit the shelves, I feel like I'm going backwards & I don't find fitting the shelves after the front too hard, it can be a bit awkward but if I have to remove one of the supporting battens it's less work than having to refit the front frame, & the final thought is that when I'm discussing the build with the clients the amount of shelves is pretty much decided, but I say that they can decide on those later when they can see the cupboard and have a better idea of the size inside etc, 1 or 2 shelves? They often don't sound too sure at the beginning & can't envision the finished piece even though I've given them a scale drawing, swings and roundabouts as to which order, if you find it easier the way you mention & it works for you then that's you're perogative, the finished piece is the important thing 👍 😊

Great series (as always) Gid; a real masterclass in scribing. If the shelves were to be spayed, how would this have changed your approach, as you wouldn't have been able to glue & pin on site?
@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks 👍 I never really considered how much scribing i did until making these vids 😂the shelves I would make them in a similar way on my bench, prob using the lock mitre cutter for the front as it gives a neater finish but leave the timber frame inside 20mm+ back from the edges so a batten could be fitted to the sides & back wall of the alcove & then the sprayed shelf would slide in over those & just be glued, problem with that is the alcove is never square so getting a good fit is hard, the made-up/sprayed shelf could be scribed to the correct shape but cutting nice fresh paint & getting a clean cut on both sides, & if the front of the alcove is smaller than the back it won't slide in 😣😂

@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks 👍 I have a 50L Bostitch compressor, it's only just big enough for what I'm spraying, if i had to replace it i would get a 100L+ machine with the highest cfm i could afford, cfm is how fast the pump refills the tank, The Devilbiss FLG5 with 1.8mm nozzle is my favourite no'1 gun, Id recommend that, it will spray almost anything but there are cheaper ANI guns, £24, that work fine & could be a starting gun to practice with, i have two of those, a compressor in a garage/workshop is a good thing anyway, blowing off work, nailguns, inflating tires.... This company are good people for sprayguns, the compressor I'd have to look into when the time comes but my little site Wolf 6L compressor is 25yrs old n still works well even though it's been knocked around a lot so would consider one of those if they make them as well as they did www.spraygunsdirect.co.uk/index.php/ They're these but i don't pay screwfix price, Google Carlisle magnetic catch, there's cheaper ones online www.screwfix.com/p/carlisle-brass-magnetic-catch-nickel-plated-15-x-14mm/2077p#_=p

@@Gidjoiner I did reply Gid but cannot see my reply , i live in Manchester so there must be some decent wood yards ,ill have to do a bit of research and see if i can find it elsewhere, if not i will just pay the £35 at wickes . Going slightly off subject i wanted to pick your brains Gid regarding pre-cat versus two part paint , i am thinking of having a go at spraying my upvc windows, they are the typical white windows, i have half a can of dark grey pre-cat left from when i repaired and sprayed my sons kitchen and was going to use that ,but i am pretty sure in one of your videos you stated that two part dries to a harder finish . What do you think Gid , is the pre-cat up to the job or would you say buy the two part which i have not tried yet .
@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, There's several kinds of paint, single & two part, it's not the hardness i would be thoughtful of, I wouldn't use the Pre-cat on plastic, I'd go with the PU i use normally, plastic paint for plastic windows, both are enamels but there's a flexibility in the PU paint but not in the pre-cat, to be honest tho I've no idea what the outcome of either would be, & to clean the UPVC first? I know the PU thinners melts some plastics, Go for it n good luck 😂👍

Very nice job Gid! just out of interest, how much roughly would a job like this cost?
@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Joe, thanks 👍 Sorry it's hard to give a price as I don't share my details on here but for a job like this it's about a wks labour 5-7days + materials, every job is different, Materials would prob be £100-£150-ish , A morning shopping, machining and making doors takes the most time, a couple/few days, then a day or two fitting it in the house, I don't rush to get the job done, I want it done right even if it takes a bit longer but I don't charge more for that extra time, the final invoice I give is the same as the original quote unless they change something along the way, sometimes waiting for glue to dry can add time because 2 days quoted work (16hrs) sometimes has to be spread across 3days, on this job making the floating shelves was a little time consuming,

Nice one Gid, ref your shelf, do you drill at the laser line or do you align top/bottom of the battens against the laser
@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Steve 👍 It depends if i can set the laser up, if i can set to the correct height i would work top/bottom of the batten, when screwing the piece on the hole could be anywhere but where the batten or whatever is getting fixed to the wall is fixed is the important thing, just as if you're sitting a level on top of it, quite often tho the laser is just a level line to measure from.

@Gidjoiner

It's all going to get painted, different materials move at different rates so lippings tend to show after a while & get knocked off, these shelves were to look like seamless boxes , Why would i want to lip the edges with Beech? I lip the front of the internal shelves to stiffen/strengthen the front edge & to cover the ugly plywood edge but generally I avoid putting lippings on whenever possible,

I thought the beech doors would have had a finish on them for the 'wood look' might have well made them out of MR Mdf
@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 4 жыл бұрын
I have this comment saved for this sorry it's long n copied n pasted, - The basic answer is compared to Beech MDF is crap, It's about the quality of the base material & therefore the quality of the overall job, wood is wood to me so painting it is no issue but some woods are better than others, for quite a while i used pine, 'cheapest price' i was asked for but the shrinkage & warping later when the pieces went into a centrally heated house were unacceptable to me, Beech doesn't cost that much more on a job of this price, the time & expense put in ya might as well have a decent substrate that'll stay relatively stable for it's lifetime, Beech is harder than pine & 100 times better than MDF, it's fairly straight grained with little or no knots, it's not just the longevity tho you can feel the difference after it's sprayed, the temperature, the hardness & the way it shuts just gives it a better well made feel. I build these things with the hope that they will still be around in 50yrs like the old pieces that are still sometimes around, they were often made of pine, which is what i was/am trying to emulate but the quality of the wood (pine) was better then, if i bought planed pse pine i would still have to machine it sq n straight because off the shelf it never is, so the labour in preparing the wood is not much different & cutting the dominos is the same for both & maybe the same time spent would be spent on the joint of MDF whether that is a spline/scribe/groove or domino. I would use MDF if I didn't care too much & the job was cheap, if i didn't expect them to last more than 5yrs, if i wanted a very flat no grain finish or if it had to be done with that material through customers choice for whatever reason (prob against my advise), Mdf boards never come straight so tall doors can be a problem, screws don't hold as well as they do in Beech so hinges tend to come loose, fitting butt hinges into the edge of MDF is not reasonably poss, I use ply for the carcass on some jobs for a similar reason so the screws in hinges/hinge mounting plates, hanging rails & drawer runners hold well, When spraying there is an inside & outside edge on the stiles n rails, MDF feathers a little so there would be more work there sanding, i give my customers the option of ply or MDF panels on the doors, you get a very flat finish with the MDF, Ply is a slightly better material but there's a possibility of seeing the grain through the paint, their choice?, when sanding these doors with beech stiles & MR MDF (I only use Medite MR MDF) panels it's always the panels that need the most sanding, I do sometimes use MDF for doors & drawer fronts, normally when it's just a plain flat door i want but I have a list of materials in my head, MDF is the very bottom & would be my last choice for shaker doors. unless it was a bespoke style/sized door to match an existing set you might as buy some, there's loads of MDF units/furniture on the market, a lot cheaper than asking me to build one, Building out of MDF is not the quality that my clients ask for or expect from me

@@Gidjoiner Only asked lol. But I agree, the pine today is not worth a wank MR MDF does hold it's shape well, I have not checked out the prices of beech for a while while, so not sure of the price difference, most people want it as cheap as possible, cheapest way MR MDF (if I dont have to paint it :))

@@Pistol_Knight Sad but true, most people have no taste and don't value real craftsmanship. These same people will spend a grand on a 60" flat screen television but would baulk at you for asking them for the same money for a handcrafted dining table, 🙄🙄 I would love to have been a tradesman fifty or sixty Years ago. Back when craftsmanship was appreciated and the quality of the timber was much better.

Another great set of videos mate, could have worn a nice shirt and tie and had a shave if you intended being on the video yer scruffy sod lol, one serious question mate, would it not have been easier to use Kitchen unit type hinges that give you decent adjustment, keep posting Gid, love em and nice to see a job well done, well videoed without 3 grands worth of cameras , and also, bloody well explained, nice to hear the old Barnsley phrase " k' unt be bolloxed " the letter K was exchanged for the "C " for legal reasons lol, and I know you didn,t use the F word at all, lol brilliant mate, don,t ever change, yer magic pal

Never shave, if they don't like it then ... 😉 yep a lot of people do projects to make videos for YT, I film my work for YT, the filming bit is secondary to my work so just my phone in my pocket is all it prob will ever be, I spend a few hrs discussing details of a job, sizes, materials, hardware etc. cabinet hinges do give adjustment, self closing with soft close or push to open but they do sag a little in time & I would have had to put a piece 65mm inside for the mounting plate, butt hinges should last many many yrs with little sagging the doors will prob show signs of age before the hinges, swings n roundabouts for each job. Thanks Garry 👍
